Please forgive me my bad English.
If you´d like this journal, I´ll continue with Hattori ryu. :D

History of some schools in Ninjutsu

Iga ryu Ninjutsu

In the year 1049 Chinese battle lord met with battle lord from So province. Ikai was defeated and retreat to Ise in Japan. Here he lived and taught martial art, which was later developed as Ninjutsu. He taught two men, Fujiwaro no Chikada (also known as Gamon Gouji) and Hogenbo Tesshina. He taught them eighteen Chinese martial arts.

On following list are names of ninjas who mastered in that time Soke or Jonin some of Iga Ninjutsu traditions:

Gamon Douji - Jiryaku era 1065 - 1068
Garyu Douji - Shoho era 1074 - 1076
Unryu Douji - Shoho era 1074 - 1076
Tozawa Hakunsai - Heiji era 1159
Iga Heinaibe Yasukiyo - Eicho era 1096

In the Tenkyo era (938-946) Mochizuki Saburo Kaneie, third son of Suwa Saemon Minamoto Shigeyori (lord from Shimano province), fought against Taira family. This confict was mainly against Taira no Masakado, who leads uprising. For heroism which Mochizuki proved during battle , he got part of land in Kouga region, which lies southwest from Omi province (in middle Japan, not in east). Then he followed frequent samurai habit and he changed his name to Kouga Omi no Kami Kanei. His son Omi no Kami Iechika studied Genjutsu by buddhist monk Tatsumaki Hoshi. This is probable origin of Kouga ryu Ninjutsu.

Kouga ryu mon

Relics of Nambuko era (1330) from north and south part of imperium was divided to different parts of Japan, mainly to Kouga and Iga provincies. Some of these men helped create 53 Kouga Ninjutsu families. From these 53 families there were eight elder families : Kouga, Mochizuki, Ugai, Naiki, Akutagawa nad Nagano. They were called "strong eight". They used Hiryugumu teaching and Hakuryugumi and they were masters of Ninjutsu, too.

From 53 ninja families were eight strongest on highest position. These eight were called "Kocha Hachi Tengu" and they used Kadono ryu and Nagano ryu.

One of houses, that belong to Mochizuki family is standing till today in Shige prefecture.

Sasaki family was Daimyou (Japanese lords) from Kouga province and they employed several ninja families. Jonin ninjas, who worked for Sasaki family between 1487 - 89 were Mochizuki Yajiro, Ugai Senshu, Nakai Gohyoe, Akutagawa Tenpei, Kouga Saburo II.

5th of June 1570 Sasaki Yotei summoned ninjas from both schools, Iga ryu and Kouga ryu, to the banks of Yashu river. This gathering was was summoned because of final battle with Oda Nobunaga. From Kouga school came also other Kouga samurais. They absolved intesive training from Kouga ninjas in Ninjutsu battle strategy. From this strategy also origins honour and ethics of ninjas. Although they were samurai, they weren´t afraid of using "non-ethical" ninja approach. Sasaki army was divided in three different parts according to their skills. First wave consisted from four ninjas: Mikumo ryu, Takanose ryu, Mizuhara ryu and Inui ryu. Second wave of ninjas consisted od others 53 families. Third wave included Sasaki samurais along with some Kouga ninjas. In backup facility were 3000 samurais from Tanemura, Niimura and Kawai families.

During battle Mikumo Iyo no Kami, samurai in duty who was on Sasaki´s side, change for Oda army and attacked Sasaki´s army from behind. In result Sasaki was defeated and barely escaped without being captured.

Tanemura Ihachiro was Kouga ninja Jonin for many years and he taught ninja history and techniques of writer Gingetsu, who later wrote book "Ninjutsu no Gokui" (Secret of Ninjutsu). Techniques described in the book are similar to techniques Togakure ryu from Iga province.

The battle of Sekigahara

Castle Fushimi, which is situated southeast from Kyouto, belonged to Torii family filiated with Tokugawa, future shouguns. In this caste lived around 400 ninjas from Kouga families.
During their stay in castle died in battle around 100 Kouga ninjas. When Tokugawa Ieyasu became shougun, he held mourning for ninjas killed in battle.

Not a bad reading... =D But you could have thrown-in some good stories to make it more interesting, you know, like Musashi-sama! Though I am a bit confused after just reading all those names, which were not described. You might have written only the most important names. Please take this as an advice, and keep up such journals! These are very rare on DA indeed!

That happens to me too, when I set out to write a journal. It usually takes about three hours when I want to make it good, with pictures and lots of info. Musashi-sama journal will be amazing, I am sure of that!

Again Im glad that you like this journal!
Idont do any martial art yet, but Im going to start practising kendou. I know that everyone knows about it and they wont fell on their faces like when you say that you practise ninjutsu =p, but I really love kendou. Maybe I later add practising another weapons, because it isnt good to be fixed on one weapon.
BTW, it is said that sword is a soul of samurai. Is there any ninjas weapon which is special for him?

It may sounds stupid, but why are you so fascinated about Iga? Im often thinking abut feudal Japan, too. :aww: But as a woman in feudal Japan I should learn how to use naginata, ne?
Thats great! Its good to hear that someone keeps the tradition alive!
