Kaiwhekea by HodariNundu Kaiwhekea by HodariNundu

No relation to Kawekaweau :D
Kaiwhekea was a late Cretaceous plesiosaur; its remains have been found in New Zealand. Because of its large frontal eyes it is believed that it hunted in deep waters, although it must be remembered that half of the year was almost constantly night.

That is one badass looking plesiosaur! I don't know why, but animals with frontal eyes look so awesome to me.

Nice. I've seen the skeleton (or at least a cast of it) at the Otago Museum in Dunedin, NZ.

resembles some of the monster stories from around NewZealand. Wonder if they're related.

I doubt it, but New Zealand waters team with modern day monsters, from giant and colossal squid to rare whales...

Right, but I'm talking about some of their old legends.

Just the same. Modern day animals could have inspired those legends.

Nice. It also has a shorter neck and larger head. Could it have a different diet than other pleiosaurs?

Scientists say its teeth suggest a diet of soft bodied prey, hence the squids :D
