*EDIT 3* This chart is outdated and needs major updates, so feel free to comment or Note me for further help in regards to SAI 1 brush settings to be used in SAI 2

*EDIT 2* This needs to be updated! If you're having trouble getting your brush shapes and textures to work in SAI 2, the January 6th update requires those files to be in their own folder called "init". You should also have been prompted to transfer your SAI 1 brushes to SAI 2 if you wanted to (not required but its a good idea to) Feel free to Note me if you're having trouble! I'll try to update my masterlist soon since these drastic changes!

*EDIT* Recently someone noted me that they were having issues with one of their brushes, where it wasn't working as similarly as it did in SAI 1, so I went over this chart and their settings to mine and figured out that this chart is likely outdated and needs updating. Likely one of the lines doesn't correctly correspond with each other, so I'll be updating this chart to reflect that. Apologies for any inconvenience that this incorrect chart has caused!

PS: Each drawing tool (pen, brush, air brush, etc) has missing parts compared to each other. For example, the pen tool has settings missing that are on the brush tool (the Pen doesn't have the Blending drop-down menu, but the Brush does)

Old description: Remy__Wolf on Twitter was asking people if they knew how to adjust their Paint Tool Sai 2 brush settings to match with their version 1 settings, so I made this comparison table for the Brush tool. These settings are within update 8/20 of the licensed version of Paint Tool SAI 2

Note: For the Hard <-> Soft (slider) settings in PTS2, you can adjust all of the different pen pressures individually, whereas in PTS1 it adjusted all 3 with the same amount (unless certain pressures were unchecked/disabled) They range from 0 to 200 in PTS2

PS: If you have the (paid) license for Paint Tool SAI 1, you can get PTS2 for no extra charge (you need to request a new license for PTS2) THIS IS THE OFFICIAL VERSION, NOT A CRACK VERSION! Please consider buying Paint Tool SAI. I got mine years ago for less than $60 and is well worth the price! I have not had crashes from the beta (knock on wood) and new features are added frequently. You can even request features from the creator of SAI! Please support this man, thank you ^^

I've been scouring the net trying to find a guide to help me with remaking my SAI V1 brushes in SAI V2 but I have yet to find anything substantial. I don't understand the different settings SAI V2 has as opposed to V1 and it's been making it difficult to get my brushes to feel like they did in V1 in V2. Since this file is outdated, I don't know if the chart would assist me or if I should wait.

I know you said that this is outdated, but I just wanted to say this is still really helpful and appreciate you taking the time to make this. I use SAI 2, and the majority of brushes that people post are from SAI 1, so this makes it so much easier to try out new brushes instead of desperately trying to fiddle with things. It also helped since I wasn't 100% sure what the brush modification settings exactly did, and this helped to clear up a lot of it. Thank you so much for this!

I don't know if this will be helpful to other people at all (I'm nowhere near an expert in SAI 2), but this is just something I sort of discovered on my own that's personally helped me: It was really hard for me to get the right "feel" for a brush that I was trying to recreate into SAI 2 because the texture felt kind of off while I was drawing and it didn't feel right for me. I found that if you go under the second box where you select textures and make sure to un-check "Affect by MiniDens", it fixes this problem most of the time. The box is automatically checked when you select a texture for a brush, so if a texture for a brush doesn't feel the same as a SAI 1 or it seems off, this might be the problem.

(This is just one of my brushes from my SAI 2, for an example)

I'm sorry if this is all useless information or not at all helpful, I just thought I put it out there just in case!

Is this for April's version or do only some textures have this? I have January's update and this isn't there and I've never seen it before until your comment

I'm really glad my knowledge of this program is helping everyone so far! It really means a lot to receive this comment, so thank you ^^ Hopefully I can get off my lazy ass and make more stuff lol

Oh yeah, I just checked and it is for an older version...I just updated it ^^; Hehe, sorry about that, I probably just was more confusing. But in the newer version, it seems that "Scratch" is the same option. I'm not 100% sure, but that's just what it seems like to me after a little bit of testing.

Of course, I appreciate so much the effort you went through to make this. I prefer SAI 2 over SAI 1, but the majority of brushes people share are for SAI 1...I struggled a bunch until I read this, and it cleared up so much for me! Again, thank you so much :worship:

Yeah the advanced settings could stand to be more clear in SAI 2 but here's what I have for ya (to open Tool Preference, hit that tiny box on the bottom left corner of your brush sizes box):

NewCanvas3

Edge Hardness=Sharpness

Amplify Dens.=Max Dens. Pressure

Hard <-> soft=Prs. Hard <-> Soft: Brush Size/Density

For the hard to soft setting, set both pressure sensitivities to the same value. If only one needs to be active, then set the one you don't need to 0

Also, if you hover your mouse over (most) settings, it tells you what it does in case you forget or you don't know what they do

Hope this helps!

Hello hello! I would like to start drawing in Paint Tool Sai 2 but I'm not sure how to transfer my brushes over. I was told you could help me?

Hitaka5Ever's avatar

If you get the latest version, you will be prompted to import your tools from SAI 1 to SAI 2 when you launch it for the first time. The program detects SAI 1 on your computer for you. Otherwise, you have to remake the same brushes with the new SAI 2 settings. If you need help with that, I can recreate them for you if you share the SAI 1 settings

HarakuHearts's avatar

Do I share them through screenshots?

Yep

Also, here's the new chart with the help of thelittlekitty:

Hello! I'm having some trouble with replicating sai 1 painting brushes, specifically with the advanced settings, that are all changed and I don't really know how to replicate them with those settings. I'd be really thankful if you can give me a solution to that, thanks!

Hitaka5Ever's avatar

The best way I can help is if you share your SAI 1 settings if you have them with me and I replicate it myself, because this chart is outdated and I haven't figured out how to update it yet, especially with the latest updates

If you have the latest update, there's 5 categories (if you imported your settings from SAI 1 or old SAI 2s to latest SAI 2s) and one is Ver. 1 tools. So if you haven't tested those tools yet, I would do that while I try to recreate your brushes (which will help me update this chart)

Pop0wo's avatar

These are actually not mine, i saw them on a youtube video and found them really good ones, so i wanted to replicate them on SAI 2

Alrighty, thanks! I'll take care of it when I'm up later (its 6am) and hopefully figure out how to fix this chart with it

Pop0wo's avatar

Great! I'll wait for it!

Pop0wo's avatar

Also, if you can recommend me some settings or free custom brushes i can download, it would be amazing, I've been using Manga Studio with default settings for months and I'm just starting to experiment a little bit with SAI 2

Hitaka5Ever's avatar
Hitaka5EverHobbyist Digital Artist

Figured I'd reply here for both things

Here's the Basic category brush and Ver. 1 category brush, both without pen pressure for Min Size and Min Density

Yuki Brush Help SAI 2

If you want pen pressure, enable the tick boxes for Minimum Size and Density and Blending and Dilution. If you don't want it enabled, then untick the boxes

As for custom brushes, I have a bunch faved here: https://www.deviantart.com/hitaka5ever/favourites/75575484/sai-brush-settings

How to "install" textures and brush forms can be found here:

SAI 2: 'Installing' Custom Brushes (READ DESC.)

Hope this has helped! If not and there's a visual for this brush that I can go off of, I can fiddle with things, but as far as I know, these settings are correct

Pop0wo's avatar

Hey that's great, I'm really thankful for that! like it's the first time I interact with people here on Devianart and I got a really good impression from it's community. I'm really happy with this, what a cool person you are

The only issue I have is that most of the brushes faved on the link are for SAI 1, maybe i should just use SAI instead of SAI 2 lol
