Mandala lines by Hira--Akami Mandala lines by Hira--Akami
For this exercize, we were to create a mandala. We were allowed to use figurative elements, but aside from vaguely flower-esque shapes, I decided not to (earlier designs included kanji and items, but I felt it made the piece too busy and unbalanced).

I am very happy with this, however I had something of a disagreement with my teacher about it. She felt it was too simple, and wouldn't hold the viewer's attention long enough. I felt that if we were making something that was supposed to embody our beliefs or inspirations, it had to be simple, because I strive for a simple elegance in my art and life. She graded me down for it, but I honestly didn't care anymore at this point.

You can color it if you like, but please give me credit!

Every line on this was made with a sakura pigma marker in a compass.

I love the design of this. It would make quite a lovely brooch. I need to adorn an ice skating outfit that I'm doing for a Jem & The Holograms fan art picture. Would you mind very much if I included this. I will give you credit in my description of the of the finished piece of course. I'm still trying to see if there is something else that I like that is appropriate but this is the first one I've seen that I really like.

This is very pretty. The triquetra in the middle caught my eye.

thanks! There's actually a little symbolism from Catholocism (the triquetra), shinto (the chrysanthemum) and buddhism (the lotuses).

Yes, I see that. :) I'm drawn to each of the symbolisms. And did you know that the triquetra is not solely a catholic symbol? It has roots in paganism too.

Oh yeah. We catholics are as bad as the romans when it comes to stealing religious things like holidays and symbolism.

lol That's because catholics started out as romans.

Probably. that would explain the whole world domination bent from a philosophy that centers on pacifism lol.

Ah, well, I tend to take a sort of survival of the fittest attitude. Completely pacifistic religions like zoroastroism and the shakers tend to die out. Unfortunately, for a religion to survive, the evangelical tactics must at some point be a little... vigorous. It's probably why I'm less of a fan of religion (the human institution representing a philosophy) and more of spirituality (the aspects of the philosophy itself).
