Long Time No Write!

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 26, 2014, 12:19 PM
Happy new year everyone
I made this specially for all my friends and fans, and enjoyed playing about doing it.
Happy New Year! by Hippopottermiss
Here in France we wish people Happy New Year rather than Happy Christmas and we have up until the end of January to do it, which suits me fine because I'm always so busy in the run up to Christmas.

So what's been going on recently? The weather this winter hasn't been very cold but it's been wet, wet, and more wet. Yesterday the sun shone but today it's back to raining. I took a lovely photo of my neighbour Emile one morning when the road by my house was flooded. He and my dog Tila were playing in the water.
Emile and Tila by Hippopottermiss
Since I bought my house in 1999 the river has only flooded over the road five times - three of them this winter!

Work is still being slowed down by my wrist which is still slowly getting better. I can do a lot more with it now but not everything, and it hates the cold weather :( I have made myself some woolly wrist-warmers from an old pair of woollen tights and I wear one almost constantly, including at night. It is helping, so I'll just have to keep wearing one until things eventually get back to normal.

My eyes are misbehaving again. Last week I developed some more black spotty bits in my left eye and have lost a bit more sight. It scares me a lot and I wish they would stop it! Since there's no treatment I'll just have to put up with it and do my best to slow it down. I'm seeing the ophthalmologist again in February.

I had the good luck to be able to go to The USA again in October, to the annual Hippolotofus reunion in Branson MO. Hippolotofus is the international hippo collectors group. This year's reunion will be in Portland OR so with a bit of luck I'll be able to tack on a few days on the Oregon coast and paddle in the Pacific Ocean. I've done the Atlantic and Indian oceans, the North Sea, and the Baltic, but never the Pacific. The coastline looks really nice. Hippos are still my biggest sellers and I still have lots of ideas for new ones :)

My favourite new thing from last year is my badger design. First I did some black, white and grey ones, then I tried them in colour. I have lots more experimenting to do with them yet.

I'll have some for sale soon at my next show, which will be at the "Festival Natur'Armor", a regional nature and environment festival here in Brittany in France. The theme is local biodiversity so I will only have local wild species on show.

Welcome to all my new watchers that add themselves a few here, a few there  I hope you continue to enjoy what I post. I'm amazed and pleased that there are so many of you that like my work. I continue to enjoy visiting your pages when I have the time.

Love and big hugs to everyone - the world is a better place with hugs in it :D

And now I'm going to shamelessly indulge my everlasting passion for spirals and pretty colours :D

The AWW! Factor

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 6, 2012, 4:33 AM
So where does the ability to incorporate that "aww" factor into my work come from? I have no idea. How come cuteness oozes from my animals? It must be something to do with my silly, naive view on the world, and my very visual brain. My world is peopled by shapes and colours, harmonies and contrasts. The small details in life can delight me more than the bigger picture. Other people can make fierce-looking warrior-like creatures but I think I would be incapable of that, and must admit to not really wanting to try. The trick lies in extracting the essential essence of an animal, and what is essential varies a lot from one species to another. Once you've done that you can do almost anything with the parts that aren't essential. ferocious or funny they all have the same essentials. Who would have thought round, fat, stripey giraffes with little conical legs would work, but they do. Oh well, I'm just  thankful that I seem to be able to do it, and that you all seem to like the result :) There aren't enough smiles in this big bad world and it pleases me enormously to be able to give you some.

Yes, another DD yesterday, for my trio of giraffes:
Giraffe Fashion Parade by Hippopottermiss
Firdtly I'd like to thank :iconamandas-sketches: for suggesting them
and :icontalty: for featuring them :tighthug:

Yesterday must have been giraffe day in DD land. There was another really nice one in yesterday's DDs too:

I find his gallery delightful.

A big welcome to all my new watchers. I hope whatever I add next will be to your liking. I try to visit the galleries of all my watchers but I have to admit to failing miserably lately. I will do my best though. I'd like to say thank you to all the 1872 people (so far) who have put it into their favourites  I won't have time to thank you all individually but I do appreciate every single one of you.

I've not been posting much lately as I still can't work properly because of my wrist injury. It is slowly getting better but I have to be careful to not set it back by doing things it doesn't like. The good news is that my eyes seem to be behaving a bit better. I'll never regain the lost bits of retina but if I can stop them getting worse it has to be good. I have stacks of new ideas I'd like to work on so there will be some coming sometime. Fortunately the people who are waiting for orders are being very kind and patient. It's really frustrating being mostly out of action.

Anyway, here's a little selection of very nice things from amandas-sketches and Talty to say thank you.

Busy, busy, busy

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 11, 2012, 3:12 AM
Well I never! - a journal from Jen at last :)

Where have I been? Oh, nowhere in particular. I was a bit down a dark slimy hole for part of the winter and have been having difficulty crawling back up the other side. I think the rather spiteful crop-up monster that has been living at the bottom of my garden has been having fun making nasty things happen to me again :(
Two things have hit me hard:
1) My eyes have been playing up again. More black spots & streaking lights, but in the right eye this time. One episode in February then another in May. Lots of tests later the conclusion is that I have patches of retina that decide to curl up their toes and die. No obvious explanation apart from age and being short-sighted. They say that nothing can be done but monitor it and any changes in my vision. I'm taking various supplements to boost the circulation in my eyes and I'm being careful not to do too much heavy lifting, that's all there is :( Yes it's likely to progress and my sight will get worse but nobody can say at what speed. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it goes super slow and doesn't get too bad before I'm 90 years old. It scares the s*** out of me.
2) I tripped on a curbstone in a car park in March and sprawled flat on my face. At first I thought I'd just sprained my wrist and got some bruises and scrapes but the bruises faded and the scrapes healed, the swelling in my wrist went down but it was still painful. Doctor's verdict - I have a cracked scaphoid bone in my wrist. It'll get better slowly, very slowly. Unfortunately that's rather messing up my work and I'm having to do a lot of things differently and slowly, very slowly too.

So what have I been very slowly doing? I've been experimenting with my new stoneware kiln, trying out different clays and ideas. The advantage of making stoneware animals is that they can go outside all year round because stoneware is non-porous and doesn't suffer from freezing. I've made some new hippos specially for gardens. They're all rounded and a lot like stones, except that of course they're more fun. I've got a new giraffe design too :) One of the things I'm NOT doing at the moment is dipping things in buckets of glaze because grasping things is really painful :( that means I'm making stuff that I can decorate by hand. Quite interesting really. It's called "making the most of things". Bad for the bank balance but good for the creativity, and a whole lot better than just sitting around saying "I can't do any work because..."

I thought I'd change my name to Hippopottermiss because it suits better than Jenzanimo which dates from a long ago era. I have my Hippopottermiss page on facebook and am known as that by my hippo collectors club friends. When I have the time !! I'll be creating my new Hippopottermiss website as a complimentary site to my jen-robinson one because I want to put a lot more things "hippo" on it than fit comfortably in with the rest.

OK - I've got an exhibition coming up this weekend. Back to work (slowly and carefully).

Oh by the way - I've always resisted using watermarks or links on my photos but with the advent of Pinterest, where people change comments and often don't respect the source of the photo I decided I'd just have to do it. I found a few of my pieces on there with no source information at all and one that was circulating was even distorted! Grrr! I'll still try to keep the writing off the animals themselves.

So how are you all this festive season? I hope you're well and happy and enjoying the idea that we're past the shortest day (in the Northern Hemisphere anyway).
We won't talk about the economy. It has disgraced itself and doesn't deserve any presents this year.
To cheer myself up I set myself a personal challenge - make the tiniest hippo, full featured and glazed. I intend to beat this one but, for starters...

Get anything nice under the tree this morning? Well does it really matter? I've been given some really nice things recently that were nothing to do with Christmas, and I think they count so much more than what's under the tree :) I'm really in two minds about the commercialization of Christmas. On the one hand I profit from it because us professional artists sell a lot at this time of the year and on the other hand I hate it! The mad buying frenzy and feeling obliged to spend more than you can afford on presents and food. Well I'm not into all that. I'm into giving love and happiness, but in other ways than overspending and stuffing yourself.

That's enough rambling :) I'm not a rancid old scrooge. I enjoy Christmas and the fun side of things so I hope you're having a nice time with family and friends.

Thanks to all my new and not so new watchers, and the people who put my work in their favourites, and comment, and send notes. I appreciate all of you  I just don't often have the time to thank you individually.

I'm going to celebrate the return of my pretty journal by featuring some nice things from my latest watchers and from my inbox. Sit back and feast your eyes :D

The clocks have changed to winter time and the nights are drawing in:( I don't like winter, but this year I feel OK about it for lots of personal reasons :D At the moment I'm enjoying the beautiful autumn colours of the trees. The weather this year has been weird but great for colourful trees and even better for my grapevine which grows on the front of my house. I still have a few grapes lurking in the bottom of my fridge but most are gone. I've been giving them away left right and centre. Neighbours, friends, colleagues..., even a big basketful for the local distribution cerntre for food for people on insufficient incomes (Restos du Coeur). I'm certainly not lacking in vitamins.

Next weekend will be my last normal craft fair of the season. It's indoors so that's nice. The last time I do a modeling demonstration for the public this year! I am deliberately not doing any outdoor December ones this year. After the one coming up I will be concentrating on one exhibition which will run from the end of November until Christmas, and supplying the collective shop in Dinan that I am part of. It feels odd because I'm not used to it, and of course it is a commercial risk, but loading and unloading the van and setting up stalls is not recommended for my eye, and it can be pretty unpleasant being outside in all weather too. Fingers crossed that it works out OK.

I'm really pleased with some of the things I've made recently, especially my circus frogs fav.me/d4d81w8 They were a technical challenge and I'm so happy with the result. I'm going to get a stoneware and porcelain kiln so I will soon be making outdoor frogs too. I'm looking forward to being able to make things that can stay outdoors all year. I want to make a "There's a hippopotamus on our roof, eating cake" www.bouncemarketing.co.uk/imag… but my version of course :) My daughter loved that book when she was little. I want to make big silly birdies to put in gardens too www.jen-robinson.com/gsillyb.h… So many ideas rolling round in my head (as usual :D). How can people get bored and not know what to do? I have far too many things that I NEED to do, never mind the ones that I WANT to do.

I want to say a big thank you to all the people who have added me to their watch or put my work in their favourites :tighthug: I answer as many comments as I can and usually I check out everyone who watches me. Unfortunately the other day I clicked on the wrong thing and accidentally deleted the list of people who have added me to their watch! Sorry folks :( Since I'm often looking at the pages of people who comment on my work I hope I'll catch up with you that way :)

Oops! Time flies, lunchtime has flown past and I'm hungry. Better go and see to my stomach :) I'll check the kiln temperature too.
Have creative fun everyone & I'll be back sometime soon. Actually I'm often here checking & replying to messages but don't often have what it takes to write a journal.

Oh dear - I seem to have left the same journal here for AGES! That's actually a positive thing since it's because I've been busy, and not because of my eye :) I kept meaning to update, but didn't have enough time to write a decent journal. I'm abandoning that approach since I still don't have enough time but want you to know I'm alive & well & do check in to DA regularly to look at comments/messages/ and even some new stuff when I find a few minutes.

My eye is still bothering me in that I still have streaking lights so I have to be careful to not do too much heavy stuff. Complicates my life a lot but I'm coping, and finding more what bothers it and what doesn't.

Work keeps on going on... Things have improved a little on that front this summer so I've been able to pay some bills that were getting a bit critical. Not too many more to clear so I hope it continues like that.

Recently I've sold a little more through my facebook page www.facebook.com/JenRobinson.c… and will probably continue in that vein. I've also got a new Hippopottermiss facebook page for my hippo collecting fans www.facebook.com/pages/Hippopo… I add news on those more frequently than either on here or on my website. I'd be dilighted if you came and joined my fans. Say Hi to me if you've come from DA so I know :D

My other new venture is that I'm running clay modelling courses for adults and children in Plouër sur Rance (22). The classes start next week. It'll be fun & will make a change. I know an awful lot that I can pass on :)

It's windy today - a real autumn feel to the weather. Bye bye summer! Oh well, I've been given another wood-burning stove, so I can warm more of my house this winter. I'm about to be given a really nice computer too because someone I know has bought a new one. Aren't I a lucky lady :D

Bye until next time. Keep warm and happy and creating

I have a new project on the go. I bought myself a small second hand graphics tablet so of course it needed trying out :D The result is an 8 inch repeating square of hippos. It comes in four different colourways and I have combined them here all in one square Laughing Hippos by Hippopottermiss

I'm putting it on Spoonflower to sell it as fabric and have also used it on several different things in my brand new Zazzle shop. So far it is on mouse pads, and cases for iPhones & iPads. www.zazzle.fr/hippopottermiss*
That link will give you my French Zazzle shop so if you can't cope with the language it is available in all Zazzle online stores worldwide. This link will get you into my shop on US Zazzle:
www.zazzle.com/laughing_hippos…

I have uploaded the four colour variations, warm, cool, bright, and pastel, to Spoonflower, and ordered my test swatches to check that it prints well before it goes public. This is a square cut to show you the different colours. Here there is a tiled version of it so you can see how well it repeats. Actually I really like all the colourways put together like that. Maybe I should offer that version for sale too :D

A tiled version of all four colourways of my new hippo fabric is in my scraps so that you can see how well it repeats:

Talk To Me

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 26, 2010, 7:25 PM
in the Artisan Crafts chatroom on Sunday

Hey everyone, have you always dreamed about being a professional sculptor, potter etc.? Lots of people have, but it usually remains just a dream. Some of us took the plunge. On Sunday November 28th @ 10am PST I will be part of an Artisan Crafts chatroom session with various professional artists. We will be answering any questions you may have about the professional side of things. Please come and say hello at chat.deviantart.com/chat/artis… and ask whatever you want to know. For those of us in Europe that's 6pm GMT or 7pm in France.

What have I been up to?
I've made a few changes to my website and integrated a PayPal « buy » button system for the hippos for sale page. They say it's easy. They say it's rapid, they say you need no technical knowledge  They would wouldn't they! It seems there are problems with putting multiple buttons on one page... I banged my head against a virtual wall for ages trying to copy and paste button script into the html of my website. The only way out was to create a sales page for each item because I couldn't put more than two buttons on one page :( Even now, when I paste the script into the code, Dreamweaver creates a whole variable length line of exclamation marks, crosses & other symbols that has to be removed before the script works. Just as well I'm not a complete novice or I'd have given up in despair.

That means I now have my first few hippo necklaces for sale www.jen-robinson.com/avhip.htm…

I've just come back from visiting my daughter Helen and small grandson in the north of England. While I was there I was talking to Helen about the idea of making some things in fimo that I couldn't easily make in clay. She agrees it would be a good thing to try and gave me her old fimo that she hasn't used for ages. I used to make her things for her dolls house with it when she was small. Yesterday I had a play and set myself a challenge – to make the tiniest fimo hippo I could with all the necessary details. So far I've got down to 17mm long, but I don't think I've stopped trying yet.

That makes it sound like life is really exciting at the moment! That's not quite what I mean but there's lots going on at the moment :)

I've just got my facebook ceramics page up and running properly - well the albums still need comments etc. but at least the photos are there. If you fancy a look www.facebook.com/pages/Jen-Rob…

I've also got another DD  Thank you so much to inprotest  for suggesting it and to MyntKat for featuring it :tighthughug: I would have featured your work here if my subscription hadn't run out :( I used to enjoy doing features. Maybe the economy and my health will pick up soon and I'll be able to pay for a sub. A big thank you to the many people who have added Fezig to their favourites or added me to their watch too. You are all appreciated even if I can't possibly thank you all personally.

Yesterday I uploaded a new piece, amongst others, that lots of people seem to love. It has already gone into 150 favourites and collections in one day :wow: I have to admit to being pleased with the way it turned out: jenzanimo.deviantart.com/art/H…

So how is my eye? Well it is a lot better but still fragile. I still have some lights streaking around in it, but not many. If I do too much physical stuff the number of streaking lights increases :( I'm giving it time and being really careful. I've always been rather fiercely independent in some ways, so I don't like having to have help to load and unload the van or put up my stall at potters markets etc. However, my eyesight is so important for my work, so I'm being a good girl and letting people help me. Of course I haven't been able to work full time or with heavy blocks of clay so my markets and exhibitions have suffered.

Time to go folks. I still can't spend too long at a time working at my computer. I have a lot of catching up to do when I can...

So where did I disappear to all this time? Nowhere really. I sunk into a world of not doing much. I wasn't allowed to do much. I certainly wasn't encouraged to spend time looking at a computer screen! Audio books are a pretty good option when you have to lie around idle. I laid back in a lounger, listening to books or the radio, and idly watching the birds outside the window. The streaks of light lessened somewhat and the big black spots broke up and gradually disapeared. It seems my retina has stuck itself back on. Thank you retina :)

Then, while all that was going on, just to cheer me up, I got bronchitis! That meant I laid around some more, & coughed & coughed. The fever went up & down like a yoyo for ages. I'm a lot better now and my temperature is gradually going back down – though for some strange reason it still isn't quite back to normal.

Last weekend I ventured out to do my first potters fair since all this started. A couple of colleagues kindly helped me unloading the van and taking down/reloading in the evening, but I still had to do quite a lot myself. Well it provoked more streaks of light, that have taken all week to calm down. Drat! It seems my eye would like a little more time before doing heavy stuff please :( That's bad news in the summer season but it can't be helped. I've got another potters fair on Sunday but my friend Yves is going with me to help. This is all very difficult. I've already had to cancel one fair and an exhibition and I think I'm about to cancel another one. Can't be helped though, my eyesight is too important to not take notice.

So from time to time I sneaked onto DA to see what was happening. I'm afraid I haven't replied to many of the comments, or thanked many of my new watchers. Sorry – just couldn't do it all in my limited screen time. Welcome to my new watchers, and thanks a lot for all your comments and favourites  While I've been away my subscription ran out so I'm back to basics. Oh well – it was nice while it lasted. Maybe one day I'll be able to pay for a sub but right now I'm having a job paying my bills, so no chance. I don't suppose I can do features anymore :( That's a shame because I enjoyed doing them.

Just to pile another bit on top of all that, my camera has been going wrong for a while & is getting worse. Thank goodness for eBay. I have to have a camera for my work & I've just found a second hand one that should be quite good at a fairly cheap price. I'll be eagerly watching the post next week. One day I'll buy something better than a compact camera (she says, dreaming of better times). My gas cooker had gone wrong too. Thanks also to eBay I've now got a cooker with a working oven and gas rings that turn down to minimum properly too. I've even got a smart new-to-me mobile phone – cast off by Yves who has just bought himself a new one. Add to that the free trip I'm going on to see my family in a couple of weeks... Then there's my free trip to Toronto in September... What luxury! Aren't I a lucky me? :D

When I can I'll be back properly. Right now I still need to go carefully whilst trying to catch up on lost working time. No, that isn't possible, but I'll try anyway :)

I hope you all have a really good summer :tighthug:

Good News

Journal Entry: Sat May 22, 2010, 2:03 AM
Thanks for all your concern, kind words, and healing thoughts.

It looks like I've escaped being operated on :D
The streaks of light are gradually diminishing, and yesterday, for the first time, there was an improvement in the black blotchy patches in my sight. Seems I must be doing the right thing :)

Yves is being wonderful and doing almost everything for me with a smile and a ton of tenderness. He knows how important it is because he had to be operated on for a detached retina some years ago.

Still a way to go but it's going in the right direction.

I've got some photos of new pieces that I'll be uploading. I hope you enjoy them.

The Crop-Up Monster

Journal Entry: Sat May 15, 2010, 3:37 AM
Please will someone box him round the ears and tell him to behave!

Most of us have Crop-up monsters living at the bottom of our gardens, or in a hole in the wall. Sometimes they hide in the back of cupboards or under those old socks in a forgotten drawer. It's the crop-up monster that causes all those unexpected things in life. Like us they all have different personalities and different moods.

For a while I had a nice happy one in my garden that surprised me with good things and fun :) I think he's moved out and the current incumbent is less amenable :(

His latest trick this week is to try to unpeel one of my retinas! Not nice Mr Monster! Please will you leave me alone for a while. I've only just got over the hurting shoulder from when you tripped me up. I've got flashing lights and strange black spots and blurry patches. I didn't really want to spend several hours in emergency at the eye clinic the other day. Nor do I want to spend days doing pretty much nothing hoping that it'll calm down. I certainly don't want the alternative if it gets worse of being operated on!

I was supposed to be at a really good potters fair this weekend, where they'd even given me extra prominence for doing a hippo modelling demonstration. Fat chance! I'm stuck here "resting".

No features today I'm afraid because I'm not supposed to spend too long looking at the screen either :( Keep your fingers crossed that things calm down soon.

The old shepherd had died, and that's what started the problem.  His children had no desire to be shepherds, and were to busy playing video games and watching MTV to become farmers, shepherds, or any other such old fashioned nonsense.  The goats had always led the sheep and the shepherd up to the pastures in the mountains every spring after lambing. There in the high meadows and the fresh air the kids had grown and thrived, and everyone grew fat and happy making hay while the sun shined.   Every winter or late fall to be exact the whole flock descended into the valley, and lived on the farm during the cold winter months.  Everyone benefited from this pattern.  The farmer had meat for his table, and extra to sell.  The farmer's wife had wool to card, spin, and weave.  The extra she could sell to the city folks who

All The Fives and a New Cat

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 16, 2010, 3:13 PM
All work + 0 play = 5,555

Yes folks, I've been working so hard that despite trying to nibble away at them from time to time there are 5,555 deviations waiting in my inbox!!! NO WAY can I possibly look at all of them - especially since I'm still busy. I can't bear to just dump all of them but most will have to go :( I'm sorry if yours are amongst them. I will more likely dump the club ones than the people I watch personally.

The Honfleur potters market at Easter wasn't too good. It was cold & windy and a lot of hard work for not much return.

Last weekend the "art naïf" festival I'm taking part in opened. There are 180 artists from 32 different countries. I was there for setting up and for the opening weekend. I even found time to see most of the things on show even though they're in four different places in town. There are some really good artists exhibiting.

My bit of the exhibition is in an old chapel attached to an abbey.

Verneuil Display by Hippopottermiss

The seting is nice but it lacks light. It isn't too bad when the sun comes out. I'm exhibiting hippos, giraffes and my brand new cats: Pinkie and the Star Boy by Hippopottermiss
I wish I'd has a chance to take proper photos of all the cats. There were about 14 of them, all different colours & sizes. I managed to sell four smallish ones on the opening day - three to other artists which is always nice.

Unfortunately I found out with less than a week to go that I had to leave home a day before I was planning to :wow: That messed up my kiln firing schedule making me fit in an extra firing where there wasn't really room for it! I had to work into the night several days in a row to get everything finished, and it didn't leave me the time to take good photos of the things I took with me. My panic made me forget my tripod too :( Oh well - I took a few mediocre photos and I hope the things sell rather than me being able to take photos when I get them back in a few weeks time.

I got home yesterday after spending a few days resting after all that. I seem to have spent a lot of this week asleep. I'm feeling a lot better now and intend to get outside and do some spring gardening this weekend.

Then I'm plunged back into making things for my next show which is in the middle of May.

I hope you're all enjoying Spring (or whatever season it is wherever you are). I love to see the life coming back to the trees, the flowers coming out, and the insects and birds getting busy. It just needs to get a bit warmer and I'll be able to take off my wiinter woolies. Not yet though - we've got lovely sunshine but a cold north wind.

Spring is Sprung

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 31, 2010, 1:51 AM
Spring is sprung,
The grass is ris,
I wonder where the birdies is?

I don't know where that came from - just something I've known for what seems like forever. Perhaps one of you would like to enlighten me.

I do however know where the birdies are. They're all in my garden building nests and defending territories & singing their little heads off :D Yesterday i watched a pair of long-tailed tits coming and going collecting bits of what looked like old spider webs from crevices of the stone surround of my window. I'd have thought that would make a rather sticky nest lining. The daffodils have burst into flower and the green is starting to reappear here & there on the trees and bushes. Then what happens - it goes cold and rainy. I reckon that's timed specially for my first potters market of the year on Sunday and Monday. Yes folks I'll be spending Easter weekend outside in this not so lovely weather. I'll be in Honfleur. Now some of you will know that Honfleur is in Normandy, which has the reputation of being the -  errm -  excuse the expression - "The pisspot of France" because it rains rather a lot :( Oh well, as long as the wind drops a bit. Yesterday we had horizontal rain and hailstones and the wind was whooshing through the trees.

My new cats are in the kiln for their first firing. They're currently at about 800°C, nicely glowing red and going up! Then they'll just need glazing.

The season is getting under way. The next weekend after Honfleur will be the opening of an international "art naïf" festival that I am taking part in. This year I'll be taking them cats, giraffes and hippos

Wot? MORE Hippos???

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 23, 2010, 3:17 PM
W.I.P. & Thanks

My trainee ceramic artist, Florence, continues to make cats as I continue to make more hippos. Yes folks - I need to make more hippos. That's OK because right now my creativity is behaving itself. I kind of lost it after my mum died just over a year ago and that just added to the general problems of life and grieving. I'm happy it's back

Florence is feeling a bit frustrated having come here thinking a few hints from me would have her making superb cats. She finds that recognising a nice cat and being able to make one aren't quite the same! Observation is very important. We look at endless photos and compare and measure and imagine. Oh how difficult it is to remember to get that angle right while you're thinking about this curve and its relation to that other bit. So many things to think of all at once! Cat two was better than cat one, and now she's onto cat three which is better still, but she's still frustrated because she's far from being up to my standard. Well what would you expect after only a week and a bit? She's already a competent thrower of pots but that isn't an automatic gateway to all aspects of clay work. I hope she persists because she could get there with practice.

And now to my hippos. I'm making "double hippo" bookends, and other hippos and am very pleased with some of them. These are a couple of pairs of bookends and a stray otter caught swimming my way recently. When they're all dry they'll be fired & glazed, along with others I'm still working on.

Trainees and Time Off.

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 16, 2010, 5:28 PM
I've been to the beach again

I've recently had a couple of teenage girls here on a work placment thing. They want to go to the same art school that my daughter went to. They were both quite good but one was faster at picking things up than the other. I had them making cats and sheep.

At the weekend I went off to spend Valentine's weekend with Yves and we went for a walk, with a friend and my dog Paddy, on a cold but sunny beach St Lunaire by Hippopottermiss
It was low tide and there were more sand trees Beach Forest by Hippopottermiss
The tide was out but starting to come in, racing quite fast over the shallow sloped beach.
"Watch out" my friends cried as a wave came up behind me as I tried to take a photo of some magnificent sand trees.
I nipped back and took this quick pic Jump by Hippopottermiss as the wave receded, but the tide was coming in fast so I never got them propely & anyway I'd spoilt the second row with my footprints :(
I just love it when I find these things on the beach :D

On the way back up a creek to get to the car we met a guy coming the other way in this Beach Buggy by Hippopottermiss
He charged along the creek in the water then he went up the sandbank onto the beach. There were other horses running in the shallow waves too.

Lovely afternoon, followed by a Shiatsu massage by the friend we were with, and dinner at her place.

This week and next I have Florence, an adult professional trainee, here to learn advanced modelling techniques.

I'm currently making hippo bookends - some of which I really like. I'll try to take some WIPs soon. I have a couple of other photos I need to take too.

I've got quite a few tree related things in my faves so I'd like to share some with you:

I don't often have the time to reply to everyone who has added my work to their favourites. I prefer to spend my available time looking at all your wonderful galleries and adding things of yours that I like to my favourites. I do try to visit the people who like my work but I apologise if I didn't have time to visit you this time round.
Please accept my thanks here :) :iconballoonsplz:
