On separate ways - Part 2 by hippo2 On separate ways - Part 2 by hippo2
Two Days later, Martha and David sat in their canvas chairs on top of their hotel roof in Paris and watched the sunset.

"And now I don't know what to do. I love Amelia, but if I won't inherit the hotel, I have nothing to offer her." David finished his tale about the encounter with his uncle. "I don't know what to do now."

"Maybe both of you can find jobs in another hotel?" Martha suggested.

"It's not that we have lost our jobs. Besides, finding another job is not that easy." David objected.

"If your uncle isn't accepting Amelia because of her background, I might be able to help. If you will wish for it, I could change Amlia's background and her education in such a way, that she suits your uncle's expectations."

David's face petrified. "Do you really expect me to do such a thing to Amelia? I love her the way she is. If you grant me that wish, you will turn her into a completely different person."

"Do you expect me to twist your wish?" Martha angrily accused him.

"Calm down, Martha! I know you would grant that wish in my favor. But since our background and our education is what defines us, you would simply make Amelia a different person. And I'm not sure if she would still love me or if I could love a new Amelia. Besides, it's downright immoral to change another person in such a way."

"There are humans who already wished for a new personal history and I already granted such wishes. I see no problem with that." Martha replied.

"And if I would wish for your story to be changed? Maybe a simple change wouldn't have caused you to rub this accursed lamp? You would have never been turned into a genie. Maybe I should do it right now?" Meanwhile, David was holding Martha's lamp.

"Don't you dare do that! Or you will replace me as the genie!" Martha hissed.

"Don't worry. I won't be so cruel. But why don't you tell me about your background? You never did and I'm sure you must have a very kind family."

Martha didn't really want to remember her family. Since she was turned into a genie, she had hardly thought about them - a thought which startled her now a lot. But since David was holding her lamp now, Martha had no other choice but to obey her master. "Let's start with me. I was 19 years old, when I became a genie. I had finished high school and was about to go to university. My first boyfriend went to the same university. One day, there was an ancient oil lamp on his desk. Curiously, I rubbed it. Instantly, I was sucked inside and turned into a genie. I had a few masters and mistresses before I turned up in the hotel, but I guess that's not what you are referring to with 'background'?"

"Not exactly." David replied. "I'm more interested in your family, your parents and possible siblings. I guess your family must be quite prosperous if they can afford to send you to university."

"My parents were quite prosperous. My father owns an import-export firm, my mother is an architect. I got a younger sister, Catharina, who should have finished school this year, and an older brother, Luca, how works for Brazilian motor company." Martha took a deep breath. "David, I feel bad. I haven't contacted my parents since I was turned into a genie. But now, I really feel like doing so. They must be terribly worried about me. They might think I have been kidnapped. "

"Then they will be even more happy to hear from you. You should contact them."

Martha was worried. "Yeah, but what will they say if they find out I'm a genie now?"

David gave her a smile. "Martha, even if you are a genie now, you still are very human."

"You think so?"

"Definitely. You care for Amelia, you care for me. And you care for your parents. I've never seen Sami doing something like that. He even twisted one of my wishes I made to save you from the cat burglar." David told Martha.

Even thought Martha knew already from Amelia what had happened, she didn't want to destroy David's chance to tell the story. "He did?" she asked.

"Yes. When the Cat Burglar stole your lamp, Sami and I teamed up to rescue you. He promised to grant me any wish that was necessary for this mission. And then, he twisted one of my wishes to turn me into a woman and a French maid. Eventually, Amelia sacrificed her wish to turn me back into a man." David told.

Martha snickered. "So you got some experience from the other side of the fence, as well?"

David leaned back and put his hands behind his head. "I guess, yes. And it was, after all, an interesting experience. I just wonder one thing..."

"What?" Martha had a questioning look on her face.

David turned his head towards Martha "Would you have twisted my wish, too? And would you have caused the same fuss to turn me back, like Sami did?"

Martha thought for a moment. "For your first question, I would need to know the exact wording of your wish. But I have would definitely turned you back to male. I wouldn't have even counted that wish, since you risked your live to rescue me."

David was happy. He smiled. "I knew you are no heartless genie. Martha, please keep that human trait of yours. If you need help, I would do anything to preserve your humanity." He took his glass of champagne from the small table.

"Thank you, David. I guess that's a good idea. Recently, I felt less and less human and more like a genie. I really appreciate your offer." Martha smiled at David.
"In turn, I will do anything I can to convince your uncle that Amelia is a good woman and suitable for running a hotel." Martha took her glass as well.

"It's a promise." Both said and clinked their glasses.

Being heartless is not a genie only trait sure it can get you turned into a genie *cough*Gregory*cough* but it's not a genie only thing. I don't get how he doesn't know that with human history and all.

He knows that there are heartless humans too (see history). But these humans usually were hated. In our story, David rather defines how a genie should be, if he wants to like that genie.

Yeah, Martha represents a power he doesn't understand. And that frightens him. Especially since Martha has already shown that she can use her powers in a mischivous way.

I'm glad to see that I'm starting to get it. I just hope he can accept Amelia that's all I was really worried about.
