Karmic payback - Part 4 by hippo2 Karmic payback - Part 4 by hippo2
Alex was walking over to the Christmas market. It was a wonderous place. Suddenly, she saw Grace and Max holding hands. "Hello Grace, hello Max..." Alex greeted them. "Er... What's going on here?"

"Alex!" said Grace and Max, "what are you doing here, we thought you were training with Sami?" asked Grace with a blush, as Max was blushing as well.

"Oh, I've finished training for today. Sami gave me many valuable hints. But what's going on with you?" Alex asked.

"Ah, well..." said Grace.
"You see..." said Max, as both were pretty tongue-tied.

"Alright." Alex said. "I think you two make a very cute couple."

Grace and Max smiled and blushed. "Thanks Alex."

"Well, I wanted to show you this." Alex produced a cute chinchilla from her winter coat.
"So cute," said Grace, with a smile.
"But I thought chinchilla were only native to South America?" asked Max, in confusion.
"It wasn't a Chinchilla originally." Alex explained. "See, there was this evil business woman who kicked a cat. I had to stop her torturing the cat, so I transformed the business woman into this Chinchilla."

Grace and Max gave Alex disturbed looks. "You are going to change her back after a bit, right Alex?" asked Grace, "like what you did to Amy, oops!"

"What did you do to my sister, Alex?” asked Max, as he gave Alex a look.
"I... I turned her into a parrot for a few minutes." Alex finally admitted. "It was because Amy wished from Martha to make Franny fat so Franny wouldn't be competition for head cheerleader anymore. So, I turned Amy into a parrot to force her to undo her wish."

"Really?" asked Max, as he looked at Grace.
"Yeah, it's true," she said.

"I see, sorry for glaring at you, Alex," said Max.

"Good. Now that this is settled, shall we go back to the hotel?" Alex hastily proposed before Grace could ask her about the Chinchilla again, but too late.

"Alex, you are planning on turning that chinchilla back into a person, right?" asked Grace, with a growing urgency in her voice.
"Must I?" Alex replies. "She makes for such a cute pet! And Sami advised me to train my powers."

"I see; still, that doesn't give you the right to turn a person into a pet," said Grace, "if you don't change her back, karma will get you back, hard!"

"Ok, you've won. I'll turn her back when she has learned her lesson." Alex promised.
"Fine," said Grace.

"Are you sure about this, Grace?" whispered Max.

"Yes I am; the woman needs to learn a lesson and a few days as a Chinchilla will teach her that," whispered Grace. “It takes a week, at the least, for a person to start to adapt to their transformation."
Max shuddered at the thought of adapting to a new form. "It's getting cold. Let's head back to the hotel." The three head back towards the hotel.

When all three returned to the hotel, Martha had just finished her shift at the reception. She greeted her young friends. "Hello, you three; how was your day?"

"Hello, Martha. We had a wonderful day." Max says. "But... we'd rather tell you when we are alone."

"Wow. Now I'm curious. But ok, we can talk later." Martha says, while Max and Grace went to their rooms. "How was your day, Alex?" Martha asked.

"Oh, it was great!" Alex replies. "Sami taught me a lot about using my magic. And he told me to go out into town and practice my magic. So I got this!" Alex showed her new pet, the transformed Chinchilla.

"How did you get this?" Martha sounded very concerned now.

"Er... she was an evil woman who tortured a cat. So I punished her by turning her into this pet." Alex explained with pride.

"And what are your plans with her now?"

"I'll keep her as a pet, of course." Alex replied, seemingly disturbed.

"And you think this is right?" Martha's eyes pierced Alex.

"Er... of course. She was just a human and I'm a genie. What's wrong with that?"

"Did Sami tell you this?" Martha asked, seemingly angered.

"Yes... How did you know?" Alex asked.

"That's exactly Sami's point of view." Martha answered sternly. "I'll have a word with him about this. And you should be very careful. I know how tempting the powers of a genie are. But if you don't pay attention, you might lose your humanity."

"Lose my humanity? What do you mean?"

"You start to think that you are different than humans and that you can do with them whatever pleases you. But it's not right."

"Come on. I'm not toying with humans. I'm just punishing humans who deserve it." Alex justified herself. "What's wrong with that?"

"Finding the right punishment for an evil human is the biggest test. You should punish them in a way they can learn from their punishment. If you want to keep her as a chinchilla for one or two days, that's ok. But don't forget to turn her back. Before you can't undo what you did." Martha continued her sermon.

"Grace said something similar to me. Thanks for the advice."

"Alright, I have to talk to Sami now. You better go to your lamp and think about it." Martha finished.

"I will. Have a good night, Martha." Alex disappeared with a blink.

Less than a minute later, Martha rubbed Sami's lamp. The blue genie appeared in a cloud of smoke. "Hello, Martha! How was your day?" he greeted Martha.

Martha looked sternly at him. "Sami, I have to talk to you. Can we go inside?"

"Sure!" Sami said, seemingly puzzled. Both genies turned to smoke and entered Sami's lamp.

"What do you want to talk about?" Sami asked.

"How was Alex doing in her training today?" Martha asked.

"Alex is very talented. She has a talent to find the most fitting transformation. Really talented, I say." Sami raved about his student.

"That's very nice." Martha said. "Did you tell her to go around and transform humans?"

"I told her she should practice her powers on some humans, yes." Sami admitted. "What's wrong with that?"

"What's wrong?" Martha shouted. "She's a child, damnit! You can't say such a thing to a child. She simply follows your advice without thinking about it."

"Martha, that's perfectly normal behavior for a genie. I see no problem with that."

"But I do." Martha shook her head and took a deep breath. "Listen, Sami: You are a nice guy, but I don't feel comfortable when you transform humans just for fun."

"Oh, yeah? What about your own victims? Didn't you enjoy changing them?" Sami teased her.

"Yes, I admit that. Maybe I enjoy transforming humans more than is good for me. But I want to live among humans, so I can't become a menace to them. I have to learn how to use my powers responsively. And so must Alex. I have no problem with punishing evil humans, but in a way that they can learn from their punishment. If you want to stay with me, you have to accept that. Oh, and Sami, you should really think about how you use your own magic. Otherwise, I don't see a future for us." Martha unclipped her earrings and passed them to Sami. "Keep them. Maybe I'll put them on again." Martha fumed. She blinked and left Sami's lamp.

Thank you. Especially if you think about the backstory of the earrings.

That is what I was referring to. It's easy to forget Martha wears earrings. Even looking at the pictures they don't jump out at you. And even if they did, that would not tell you who they came from. And even knowing that, you don't necessarily think about what (who?) they once were. So her returning them has symbolism that makes you wonder if Sami sees it as more than even Martha thinks about it.

It'd be interesting if Sami restored Sheryl (especially since even Max now doesn't remember her) in an effort to do things "Martha's way". Of course he might not be able to given the stupidity of Sheryl's wish.

Sami thinks of the earrings as nothing else as they are now. For him a transformed person ceases to exist but in its new form. For him, it's just a piece of jewellery.
And yes, the earrings are a forgettable item. I often drew Martha and inked the picture when I realised, that I missed the earrings. So I had to add them digitaly. After more than a year, you really don't think about them as Sheryl anymore.

I don't think Sami is able to turn them back without a wish. He's still a genie slave, so he can use his full powers only when granting a wish. He might change the earrings into another item, as he had trained Alex to do with the tea cup. But undoing the wish would require another wish by a mortal.
But does he really want to restore her? Martha doesn't know about Sheryl's fate, though she is propably the only person knowing that Max had a sister named Sheryl once. As Martha said, the earrings are now a token of their love. If Martha will accept them again, she has forgiven him. So, he can't change them into anything else now.

Still, there might be an interesting way to deal with the earrings. It's a big desicion for Sami that will define the final ending of the story. Thank's for making me thing about it.

I am at a loss for words. Maybe it's because of my upset stomach.

I'll find something better to say next week.

I was expecting a confrontation between Martha and Sami regarding this topic. But everything else was a bit of a surprise.

I though you referred to the earrings.

Well, you got the confrontation. But Karmic Payback also applys to Alex and what she did. And I tell you that there will be a third meaning of Karmic Payback in the later parts of that story.

The earrings will remain that way, according to you. I wouldn't get my hopes up about any way back for her.

Or should I?

At the moment, the earrings are a token of Martha's and Sami's love. I will come back to them later. And Maybe Martha will find out what they really are. But she's far too week to break Sami's magic. Maybe some other magic users can.

Maybe, but then it would be a mercy to keep her as a pair of earrings. You said so yourself.

Nice chapter, very emotional.

Also, I think :iconp-z-p-z: means that Sami's not on Martha's good side.

Like when a guy is in trouble with a girl, they say they are in the dog house, since their genies, that would make it a genie dog house.

Ah! That's what you mean with "being in the dog house."
I guess you can say that. Now, there are different possible paths for them.
