A lesson for life - Part 3 by hippo2 A lesson for life - Part 3 by hippo2

While most students started working on the math problems, Martha was checking the class book. “Mhh… it seems you had some homework. Let’s check that now.” Martha looked up. To her dismay, several students were talking again or were playing with their smartphones. “Hello? Can we check your homework now? Please?”

Nobody replied. Martha felt her anger rise again. “Hey! I want to check the homework now.” She stomped her foot on the ground. The students looked.

“It works, hihi!” Martha cheered. The class laughed, but it was not a friendly laugh. Martha felt pulled down again. She decided to check the homework now, before the situation went any worse. To her surprise, most of the students had their homework done. Only one of the last students on her list, a boy named Edu, had his homework forgotten. Since Martha already had the feeling that the students didn’t really respect her, she decided to be a tough teacher now: “Edu, why didn’t you bring your home work?” she asked.

The boy shrugged his shoulders. “I dunno. I guess I forgot it at home.”

“Then you have to do it now.” Martha replied.

“Here? In the class room? With you teaching and the others talking, I can’t concentrate.” Edu replied cockily.

Martha  smiled sarcastically. “Oh, I know a place where you are all alone and it is very quite.” She reached into her purse and produced her genie lamp. “In you go!” The genie snapped.

Edu felt a strange sensation starting at his feet and moving up his legs. They were turning into smoke. “Help! What are you doing to me?” he cried as the smoke from his legs billowed towards the lamp’s opening.

“See it as a special form of detention. Once you’ve done your homework, I’ll let you out.”

The rest of the class watched in horror as the lamp mercilessly sucked in Edu.

Now Martha addressed the class: “If you don’t want to share his fate, you should better be quiet now and work diligently.”

Except from some nods and murmurs of compliance, the class remained silent and followed Martha’s orders. The rest of the lesson indeed went by quite smoothly. When the bell rang, Thalita and Eneida came over to Martha’s desk. They tried to speak, but without mouths, this was impossible.

“Do you want your mouth to be restored?” Martha asked the two girls. Both girls nodded frantically.

“And did you two learn your lesson?” Martha asked again. More desparate nodding followed. “Alright,” Martha said. “I’ll give you your mouth back.” She snapped and the girls were restored to normal.

“Thank you. Thank you very much.” Thalita and Eneida said before they rushed out of the class room.

After the lesson, Martha met Francisco Silva. “Are you content with your first lesson?” he asked the jinn teacher.

“It could have gone better, but I think I didn’t do a poor job.” Martha replied.

Francisco Silva shook his head. “I don’t think so. Honestly, you reacted the wrong way when the kids first challenged you.”

“They challenged me?”

“They challenged your authority right from the start.” Francisco explained. “That is nothing unusual, but a good teacher must know how to react. Don’t try to be overly polite. If you beg the students to do what you want them to do, they won’t do anything. Tell them ‘I wan’t you to do this right now!’ Also, you have to establish who’s the boss in the class room right from the start. It took a lot of time until you did that.”

Martha was about to object, but Francisco continued: “And why did you use your genie powers to transform all those students?”

“I didn’t transform all of them. I sent one to detention and I short-circuited the mobile.” Martha objected.

“That’s nitpicking!” Francisco Silva said. “Don’t you think their parents will have questions? Especially the parents of Thalita and Eneida? Even thought you gave them their mouthes back at the end of the lesson.”

“Oh yes, having their mouths shut magically is a very believable story.” Martha replied sarcastically.

Francisco shrugged his shoulders. “Anyways, I think you still have a lot to learn to become a good teacher. Maybe you should stick with your current profession of being a genie.”

“Being a genie is no profession, it’s a lifestyle.” Martha replied cockily. “I’m a receptionist in a Swiss hotel, Mr. Silva.” Martha said.

Francisco nodded. “I’m sure you’re doing a good job there. You always were a sociable girl, as I remember.”

Martha blushed a little. Did old geezer Silva actually praise her? He never did when he was still her math teacher. “Er… I have to go now. It’s my shift to overview the school yard.” she bid Francisco goodbye.

Francisco knows what he's talking about. Kids in that age range will challenge their teacher a lot. And subs especially so.  (Got a family member in teaching, so I know some stuff.)

But thank goodness she's not in Canada when she did her 'detentions' or else she would be in serious trouble. I'm not kidding, I know that violates some of the rules here. But that doesn't mean I don't think those kids deserved it. They so did deserve them.

Good chapter and picture. I do enjoy reading Martha stories.
