Luthien and Beren, Acrylic.

This painting was inspired by the epic story "Beren and Luthien", written by JRR Tolkien. In my view he is the greatest English language writer of fiction of all time.

This is absolutely wonderful. I love the atmosphere in this work.
It really reminds me of how I wanted to paint two years ago; I found out that wasn't something I'm good at but in my head, it looked a lot like what you're doing! Taking inspiring stories and painting them.
Did you ever read any of Anne Rice's books? They inspired me a great deal :)

Thank you, it is an honour that my work inspires you. For most people, traditional art forms take
a long time to master, you have to keep at it to get good. After a while you are able to sort of get what's in your head on the support. Keep trying!

Well, I have decided for now that painting isn't for me. Though I may have the skills to master the technical aspects of painting, I don't think I can accomplish what I want from it. I'd better leave that to people who can paint better than me :) I have my own way of working right now, which suits me much better :)
But I have loads of respect for people like you, who CAN accomplish great things like this with painting! :)

Thank you, Lynx. That work is acrylic and use glaze mediums to help with the 'glow'.

I love the mistiness of the background and the classical look. Really, really beautiful. I agree with you about Tolkien being the greatest English author, and the story of Beren and Luthien is one of my favorite stories, and you really capture the feel of it here.

Thanks you so much. You no doubt know that Tolkien had the name "Beren" etched into his tombstone, his wife is buried with him and "Luthien" is carved under her name.

Yes I do, and it's one of my life goals to visit their graves and offer my respects. Their love story is just as enchanting as Beren and Luthien's, really. And you're welcome!

I lived in Oxford from when I was 4 to when I was 8, just a couple of streets away from Tolkien's house on Northmoor. I was already a fan of The Hobbit and LotR, so that was a big deal for me (and I got to meet Priscilla Tolkien at school, which was also awesome), but I didn't read The Silmarillion until I was 9 and so it was only after I left the country that I realized the significance of the Beren and Luthien story and it occurred to me that the Professor's grave was in Oxford! Oh, well. I hope you make it to Oxford, I remember it as an exceedingly lovely place.

Thanks, Megara. I like the look and feel of oil paint and since my acrylics look like oil paintings I just decided to use oil instead :). Now I pretty much only paint with oil.

Yes, this one is entirely done in acrylic, paintings I've done since then have mostly been done in oil. Sorry for the confusion :)
