Kipcha furiously scribbled in her notebook, a fresh cup of coffee steaming on the desk. In the book, she was writing down all the possible bloodline crosses for the stock horse breeding program. They had tried every single cross possible from their existing horses. She threw the pen down on the notebook and leaned back in her desk chair, grabbing the cup of joe an taking a nice big sip. They needed new stock. She had been saying it for months now, but everyone was busy with weaning the foals from the thoroughbred program, preparing Enzo and Dezzi for shows, and training the next group of riding horses. No one had the free time to track down new stock.
Instead of stressing in her office, Kipcha walked down to the barns to visit the horses. She went through the Stock Horse barn first. It wasn't that they didn't have a lot of horses, it was that a lot of their mares were show horses and couldn't take the time off to have a foal, or even be a surrogate for one. Not even Kaza could surrogate, even though she's by no means a show horse. She was busy giving lessons to the kids. Zara, Andy, and Danz were busy showing. Shanty, Luka, Naga, Belle, Shay, Gabby, Bee, and Lacey were all in training, and Bossy was swamped with lessons even more than Kaza was. Sure, Noble could probably surrogate since she had some time off from the show ring, but that was only one foal when they needed to be birthing and selling a lot more than that.
Later that afternoon while Kipcha was back in her office, there was a knock on the door and Maia entered. She placed a file down on Kipcha's desk.
"I overheard you tell Ethan that we're in need of some broodmares."
Kipcha nodded before reaching out for the envelope.
"Well, I came across this add by chance. It was forwarded to me in an email by Tak's old owners."
Inside the file was a picture of a Blue Roan mare, obviously a Quarter Horse. She was ground tied with a blue rope halter and lead.
"Her name is Tuesday Mourning. She's broken to ride western, knows how to ground tie, and has impeccable manners. Her owners are selling her dirt cheap to whoever comes to pick her up."
Included in the file was the mare's registration information. She was still owned by her breeders. Kipcha looked up at Maia. "Why would they own her for five years and then suddenly want her gone? It doesn't make sense. Wouldn't they at least want to make sure she goes to a good home?"
Maia shook her head. "Her owners claim she's bad luck."
Kipcha stared at her. "Please tell me there is SOME form of thinking behind the thought."
"Yes there is. Apparently she was born very early on a Tuesday morning. When the stable hands came into the barn to start the morning work she was already standing and trying to nurse from her mother....who was dead on the stall floor. The vet had absolutely no explanation. All the tests and the autopsy came back normal. They have no idea what happened. The poor filly mourned her mother for months until they found a mare who would accept her. The person who trained her recently collapsed and died of a heart attack while riding her. Her owners almost went bankrupt when the bank's systems crashed and lost track of their money. There's a whole list."
Kipcha put the file down on the desk. "So why would anyone want to buy her?"
Maia sighed. "If no one picks her up by the end of the week, they're euthanizing her."
Kipcha scowled and picked up the mare's picture. "There's no such thing as a Bad Luck Horse. It's merely coincidental. I won't let her die because of her owner's stupidity. Besides, she's gorgeous."
Maia thanked her, sighed in relief, and left the office, leaving Kipcha alone to phone the Mare's owners.
