Caine found Rune to be nearly insufferable. The stallion constantly went on and on about one thing or another in constant attempts to engage him in conversation. The black stallion bitterly kept his mouth shut in an attempt to drive the chatty stallion away but it wasn't working. Rune just seemed to take this as an invitation to fill even more silence.
It was a sunny, fall day when Caine and Rune stumbled upon another pair of stallions. A blindingly golden stallion seemed to be chatting up his companion, a dark seal bay. Caine could sense the boredom and annoyance radiating off of the bay as he dutifully ignored his partner. The black stallion tried to steer Rune away before he could open his big mouth to say something but it was too late.
Both of the stallion's popped their heads up to attention. The seal bay puffed up in a defensive display while the palomino smiled and trotted over.
"Hi, I'm Midas!"
Caine pinned his ears but was completely ignored by Rune and Midas. He instinctively sent an annoyed glance at the Seal bay who reciprocated the look. The two friendly stallions were completely enraptured in their conversation, which caused the seal bay to relax some as he realized that Caine and Rune weren't really a threat. Caine picked his way over to the seal bay, who said nothing at his arrival.
"Is he always like this?" Caine asked bitterly. The seal bay nodded and dropped his head to graze. "So is Rune," Caine grumbled and dropped his head as well.
"Name's Hex," The other stallion said softly, looking away.
"Caine," He responded.
The stallions stayed and chatted for awhile, their own partners grazing while they did. It was about mid afternoon when Caine lifted his head and beckoned to Rune. "Let's go," He said, tossing his head impatiently. Rune whined like an insolent colt and pouted.
"Can't Midas and his friend come along too!" He begged.
"Absolutely not-" Caine started but was interrupted by Midas.
"There is safety in numbers y'know. Four sets of eyes are better than two," Midas offered.
Hex sighed and turned to Caine. "They won't stop unless you let them get their way," He murmured.
Caine grumbled and stomped his hoof. "Fine," He hissed, whipping around and storming off, the three horses in tow.
