Ok stupid question but you painted over the pencil sketch right? And if so, how does that work? Wouldn't you lose the placement of things like spots by painting over it?

I did, yes. I did a very rough version of the painting with the spots in place so I lost some shapes but it's mostly the same.

I'm quite curious how you make it so detailed, it looks like colored pencil. Is that some large paper format?

Hey, Hibbary, Just wondering if you can give a fellow artist some tips on acrylic work ,because I recently picked up painting. Do you go from dark to light or dark to light? And do you use much water? Also I find if I make the pencil sketch to hard and make my colors to light the pencil will show through, so how do you get around it? Thanks! ^^

I'm afraid that I'm not the best person to go to for painting advice. I have no formal training, haven't been doing it long, and am not very good at it yet.

I can offer a little bit, though. I tend to go back and forth. I get everything down in the underpainting, my darkest darks and lightest lights, and start filling in. I use some water, but once you've built up a thick layer of paint, really watery stuff will bead up and be repelled. At that point, it's better to use glazing liquid.

As for the pencil, I tend just to keep adding on opaque paint until I can't see it anymore or it's so unobtrusive that it doesn't bother me.

The asymmetry of the nose is ruining this for me. The colors chosen are nice, the detail is good, though the border should probably have been left white, (you could have used shadows for the whiskers when the run out of the frame if that was the concern). At least a more neutral color, it is calling itself out far too much. At the end, I'm going to have to prefer the pencils, as most of the asymmetrical issues aren't in that one, and that border compliments it better.

thanks for the input. There are some things I can change/fix and others I cannot. So it will just have to remain very imperfect.

Yeah I struggled with this bastard a lot and made a lot of stupid mistakes : / It's one of those situations where I could spend a lot of hours trying to fix it or just move on. I think I'll sit on it a few days, see what people have to say, and if I get the hankering later, I'll fiddle with it some more.

If only paint were as easy to change as digital :P

Oh yes. I've scrapped many an acrylic painting just to start over on the same design later to see if I could fix it. At least with oil you can pretty much wipe everything at anytime. Acrylic piles on too high too fast, and getting thinner layers wet again tends to blur things.

Oil gives me fume headaches, so now I stick to digital coloring.

oil paint solvent is the worst :( I couldn't do oil painting until I'd gotten turpenoid natural, which smells pleasantly of oranges, not the awful reek of mineral spirits. It's still so messy, though. I lean toward acrylic just because of the easy cleanup.
