A Pale Sunrise by Heylenne A Pale Sunrise by Heylenne
They are waiting for you...
...Ghosts are waiting for you.

----------

I started this one enjoying my miserable days in Shanghai. I guess it'll be my own birthday gift. Hehe. ¬¬
He is a character from an old story of mine... I don't know exatcly if I like to draw him when I'm down or if when I draw him I get down. Anyway, here he is... "enjoying" his hangover, as always.

Done entirely on Photoshop CS2 (because I don't have a scanner here), listening to "Sweet Mary" of Noir Désir repeatedly, and drinking gallons of coffee.

I don't how much time it took to be finished.
One shall never count the hours to make a Lucien's picture. :meditation:

I love the background, the colors, the hair, the way he's standing...but most especially his eyes. You have a way of making them stand out, and the way he is looking off at something *gets shivers*
Haunting. I wish I could have a quarter of your talent. I can't draw or paint :(

Foi tranqüilo. Aqui em Shanghai eu só tenho alguns parentes, e não conheço mais ninguém, então foi super "quieto"... HEhehehee
Com exceção das festas de parentada. ;)

I keep visiting this to comment, but I can never come up with anything meaningful to say -- or anything really good enough for this wonderful painting. It's been kind of like that for me recently -- brain fog. >.O

So, I decided I would just forge ahead and give it a good try. Because this painting is just so lovely and wonderful. I had to leave some kind of comment to say how much I love it. I love how it really sets a mood. The expression on his face, the colors you chose, and even the overall pose -- all of it evokes feelings and memories of times I stayed out all night doing ... *ahem* well, things better left unsaid. (LOL) I love the background, too. And the amazing details! Just ... WOW!

Yeeeeah... I was listening to Sweet Mary (a song of Noir Désir) and just couldn't avoid being completely inspired to draw Lucien and his hangover's mornings.
I'm glad it gives you this feeling! ;)

You know, Tex, I always leave your comments behind to be answered when I have more time to write something decent, reasonable. You always have so supportive and nice comments, I always like so much to read them that I can't think a way to say the well deserved "thanks!!". Don't worry about your comments, I like them. The last one, on Meryan's painting, really made my day.
Seriously.

*HUGS*

I'm so glad my comments are helpful and/or encouraging for you. And that they mean something to you, too. I am always a little afraid when commenting on artwork, because I really am not an artist at all. I mean, I write -- but for visual arts, I really have no talent at all. I just know what I love to see and love to look at. So, I often worry that I will sound like a total moron because of my lack of knowledge. Also, DA can be kind of a scary place -- LOL!

Anyhow, you quickly became one of my favorite artists here on DA. I love how all of your characters seem so "real". In every painting, even though I may not know their back stories, I can tell they have one. And, I can see their personalities peeking out at me through the images you create. To me, this is wonderful, and just one of many reasons why I enjoy visiting your gallery over and over again.

Well, I don't know exactly. Recently I found out that if you put some layers in Soft Light mode and with a nice color it can clean up the agressive effect of PS noob painting (yeah, because I'm noob). And parchments help too! If you want, take a look at *Gold-Seven's tutorial... [link]
She explains it very well.

Errr.... What do you mean by "technically, it's good"? o.õ
You mean "It's well done but it's not the kind of things I like"?

It's butterfly! :) There is a meaning for it in the story... I just haven't explained because it's too complicated, extensive and I'm getting crazy with my lack of time to do things well done.

Hm... Anyway, merci beaucoup, Ludimie. :aww:

You mean "It's well done but it's not the kind of things I like"? " >>> Mmm... Technically I am impressed. It's really beautiful and it's really gladely to see some digital colors as much alive than traditional colors.

But I don't like the guy face. He seems not impressive. He is less alive than your colors. ^^ I hope you are not upset... :worry: My english is poor I don't know how to explain better.

Oh, yeah... I tried my best to make a background less... "alive". It was supposed to match the guy's essence: lifeless, with no expression. But I think I got too excited with colours... :dead:
(And it was much more brighter than this version. I had to throw some blue layers over it to get a colder effect.)

And don't worry, I understand your point. =)
(And if you want you can talk to me in english. My french sentences are weird sometimes and I take longer to write than when I do it in english, but I can read it very well, so don't worry. But maybe I'll answer you in half-english, half-french... -_- ...Until the end of this year my french will be much better. u.u)

Once again, your skill at painting details is astonishing; from the folds in his shirt, strands of hair blowing in the wind, to the clouds above him. Plus, I like how his expression makes him appear deep in thought as he gazes out.

He is a damn junky drunkard french guy who is always causing a lot of problems to a lot of people in that story. And about the butterfly... It has a direct relation with Lucien. When you see a butterfly in my drawings you will know it has something to do with this character.

Yeah... Actually it's a stand-by story. I've left it aside when I decided to start a new one. The story which involves this character is too dense and complex. So I prefer to keep the lid on this one.

If someday I decide to make a public version I will surely let you know.

The butterfly has a meaning inside this story, and mainly with this character. When you see a butterfly on my drawings you can be sure that it has something to do with this char.

And thank you very much for the compliments and for the interest!

Err, how did you learn to draw folds ? I'm desperately trying to learn as well but I can't seem to get it right. >.>'''

T___T I'm starting to lack vocabulary to describe how much I like your new art pieces. Seriously. (gah, and I feel extreeemely lame whenever I see them x'D but at least it makes me want to improve >.>")

I don't know. It's random. Sometimes you do it right, sometimes you don't. -_-
I took a cashmere scarf I have, lied it beside my screen, and kept looking to it ALL THE TIME. You know, the lineart of the folds were ugly, awful.. So, actually it's the shading what is giving a better effect to it. =) (Damn, I still hate doing folds and fabric pieces...)

Aw, thank you sooooo much!!!!  I'm so glad to know it.
(And don't say that. The only real difference between our works is that I have a damn patience to keep myself working HOOOOOOURS on each piece....Doing and redoing everything. You see that sky? I deleted it and started again in a new blank layer 3 times. The hair too. There is no talent, no technique in my works... Only patience. ..... .... I really need to go to an art school. -_-)

You still need to understand the way the shading works on folds before succeeding... And the lines. Dang. Every fabric I see shows a different type of lines : thick folds, thin folds, wavey folds, folds, folds, folds. And every cloth uses a different material which has another way of reflecting light... D: When I think about all that I start to get desperate and I don't know how to draw anymore. xD

Patience is one of the main points in painting, you know. >.> Painter masters could spend months and months on a same painting to get it right. It doesn't mean that they don't have talent. I'd really like to be so patient. ^^
Truth be told, the thing I lack the most to work hours is motivation. I draw for myself, and I'd really be angry against myself to fail something on which I spent an awful lot of time. So, well... And anyway I'm not skilled enough to take commissions.
...>___>' Y'know, I don't have patience nor technique nor brilliant ideas of subjects nor even ideas of composition. I don't have anything. x'D I honestly think that I rarely do real art et que le reste n'est que "créer n'importe quoi".

Yeah, I do get your point. Indeed, for a really succesful outcome you must know all that. And that's why I always cry, eat my fingers, hit my head against the wall, the keyboard, the tablet... before start painting/drawing folds. So I let it to be done at last, so... u.u... Normally when I'm finishing the picture I just grow too tired of it and then I start making stupid and non sense things... So I simply don't thing anymore and make anything quickly to call it finished, and that's how I do folds. So, I don't have any knowledge about drawing fabrics, I only redo things until it looks like acceptable. Or not. U_U
If we keep thinking too much about all those details we'll just give up on drawing. u.û

Yeah, I understand you perfectly... (Although it seems I have lots and lots of patience, I don't. If you check my drawings folder you'll see that I have tons of unfinished stuff... Stuff that barely have a decent lineart. And that's why my gallery has only 17 deviations. -_-)

We'll have the technique and the composition's stuff when we join an art school. :aww:

Still, you end up with a nice outcome! I mean, it looks like folds. So, well, even if you rush it at the end, it still seems you perfecly know how to draw them. >.>
I tried to paint folds for the first time on the fanart I'm currently working on for Ludimie... I can't say whether I'm satisfied or not with it...

A gallery containing only a few meticulously painted deviations is still better than an overfilled gallery full of crap. ^o^

>.> I think we have no choice anyway. Let's just hope we'll get in! ;D
