Fan Art: L from Death Note by heycheri Fan Art: L from Death Note by heycheri

Strange, hunched, baggy-eyed and socially awkward L from Death Note has got to be the most amazing anime character ever crafted. This super-genius detective has seriously captured my heart, and I adore him so much! I never knew I could find myself so attached to any one character’s well-being, but the writing in this storyline is incredible and, if you’ve never seen it, now would be a good time to give it a shot.

My buddy Rich was talking shop with me the other day about different ways to take my art (he used to be the head of the Comics department for IGN, so he knows his shit). He was saying that while it’s great to do a lot of original pieces, it’s also a good idea to throw some of my own fan pieces into my work and do my different spins on characters that I already know and love. Characters that have inspired me in my work, so that when I recreate them myself, I put a lot of love into the art.

And that’s definitely how I felt when painting L.
As a drawn character, L is fairly simple to recreate. He’s unlike any other anime character I’ve ever seen in that he’s this gremlin kind of adorable freak of nature who’s far too smart for his own good. He’s not this typical “sexy” anime boy type — he has bags under his eyes from the lack of sleep he gets, he’s hunched over all the time because it supposedly increases his “detective skills”, he picks at his lip often and is incredibly awkward in public — but he’s just so freaking cool that you sort of forgive him for all of his weirdness.

I identify with how much of an outcast L is. He’s so dedicated to his craft that he’s completely shut himself away from the outside world and appears to be crazy. But he’s such a genius! Gah!

Anyway, I absolutely love this anime and I was sad when … Well. You-know-what happens. And I don’t want to spoil it for any of you who plan on watching it. But just take my word for it — it’s freaking awesome.

This piece prints out beautifully at a humongous 20″ x 30″.
I tried to capture L’s weirdness with the coloring of the piece — giving his skin sort of a sallow, pale, sickly look (as if he’s anemic), and drowning the background color with a moody blue to reflect the dark environment you’ll typically see him in throughout the anime. But I couldn’t help adding the touches of glowing highlights here and there. X_x It’s my thing. And I felt like the piece wouldn’t have been complete without it, ha! So I had to.

Anyway, enjoy.
And if you know of any other really cool animes to watch, let me know!
Other animes I dig: Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and Oh! My Goddess. I can’t think of anything else right now. :3

I LOVE L! Death Note is one of my favorite animes of all timeeeee ^^ (fangirl moment)
Its true, all of L's imperfections are what made him so perfect! I was immediately drawn to his unique-ness (and cute-ness!)
Death Note just wasn't the same....you know....without him *coughcough*
Anywho, I love your picture! You captured L perfectly!

Hey, I appreciate that. I didn't even think I painted him as "adorable". I was going for like, cute but creepy. XD My typical color palette is much warmer. Ha. It's always cool hearing it from another perspective. :3

I love it too! My friend collects art, and the art often comes in a series. So I'm thinking of doing collections of things. Would make it easier to shop my stuff. Make sense?

I would have cried if my friend hadn't been sitting next to me. :(!!! LOL. I was sad too. You have no idea. I felt like the whole show was ruined after that and didn't (still don't) feel like watching the rest.

thanks for the comment.
I think its beautifully done for fan art. Its very interesting compared to most of the L's i've seen. I love the colors you used. Of course im not going to say its perfect cause i dont believe theres such a thing as a perfect art piece because everyone has their own preference. But i really do like the way you did it and i think it was done really well. Keep up the amazing work.

Yeah? When I was looking at other fan art, I saw that a lot of people used references of art that's already been made. I didn't want to be one of those people ... So I kind of just drew him like I saw him in my head. Bags under the eyes, weird posture & mannerism, wild hair, yadda yadda -- he's easy to recreate. But I think that's what makes fan art so awesome. If you draw him the way you see him, it's fascinating to everyone else.

Creation is beautiful, right?

Oh my goodness! I am so glad you wrote me! You are an impeccably phenomenal. I am in love with the way you did everything - the lineart, the beautiful coloring, aahhh gfjhjfej everything! You are going to climb to the top of dA real fast, and you deserve it too.

L is an outstanding character, and Death Note is a unique (sadly short) series. I think you captured a great (and very adorable) side of L.

A friend of mine actually suggested that I write to a few people who might appreciate the work like I do, and it worked! It feels so crazy to be so connected to a crapton of other L fans, haha! I love him so much. Geeking out is fun.

The word "simplicity" always scares me. But I've learned that it can be a good thing.
For example, James Jean's work -- the process he goes through of learning what to eliminate from a piece in his redraws. It's inspiring. He has this book with 75 pieces of cover art that he's done for Fables, and seriously, you just watch him grow in both technique, repetition, etc. His current work is so clearly influenced by what he's done in the past -- he found a style and ran with it.

... Ranting.
But it's inspiring, isn't it?

Sure it is.

Simplicity isn't a negativ word for me anyway.

What I would mean by simplicity is that your line is clear, simple, graceful and isn't as "overcrowded" that other's can be. The colors are great too. Not too much and not a lot. It isn't as kitsch as It could be and it s great. Simplicity is great. I love simplicity.

"Less is more", as said Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and I want more of this. I want more of this touching simplicty. It's great. :la:
