My Bio

Aspiring yet underachieving artist and writer with a taste for ridiculous humour and terrible puns. The deranged mind behind snacks & the single man, collector of TransFormers toys, proud geek, videogame snob, dabbler in Ren'Py.

Spent most of my adult life working in publishing of one kind or another, but I'm currently spending some time on my own creative efforts, including working on a couple of games for the SAM Coupé, while potentially seeking an alternative career.

Finding sketching very daunting as I haven't really done any in years apart from the odd draw-off with my niece, and struggling to get to grips with drawing on a tablet.

(TW: More dental issues, descriptions of pain, abscess activity and dental procedures) So, having had one badly-compromised tooth extracted back in February, my Easter weekend this year brought... more tooth pain and jaw swelling due to a new abscess below the tooth opposite the one previously removed. All that, in and of itself, wasn't as bad as I'd had with LL#6, but the referred pain this time was substantially worse - absolute agony across much of the righthand side of my upper jaw, like knives being inserted into the gum, both between the teeth and from the sides. On the Saturday afternoon, I developed a fever after a short nap. The only reason I got anything done over the weekend was by taking the heavy-duty pain killers I had lying around after last time, so hurrah for opioids, I guess... My temperature came back down to normal on Sunday and, from that point on, I was able to get by on a single dose of the painkillers, before going to bed each night, with the downside that I'd

Being a bit of a retro gaming enthusiast - and having grown up in the days of the old Atari VCS, the ZX Spectrum, etc. - I occasionally find myself wondering about games that were advertised in the games magazines at the time, but ultimately never emerged. One of my Christmas presents back in 2020 was the book The Games That Weren't, published by Bitmap Books, which covers some of the more interesting titles from the ongoing blog at GamesThatWerent.com This last weekend, I happened to be browsing through that site, and saw a couple of screenshots in a post from October of last year that looked eerily familiar. Specifically, one screen from the Spectrum version of an 'Ocean-style' arcade game based on Dark Horse Comics' original 4-issue Aliens Vs. Predator story, and one screen that was a mostly blanched version of a mockup I did for an idealised/improved conversion of the old Data East arcade game (Bad Dudes vs.) Dragon Ninja. The post mentioned that the screens had first been

I had a notification that today is the birthday of a close friend of mine... Only she died just over a year ago, and I still haven't quite processed that fact. Yesterday, I happened to be reading through an email chain (with someone else) where I described things that were happening in the office back when she and I worked together, including the extra days we put in - after being made redundant - to push out the last couple of magazines for the month, because the much-vaunted new system and centralised Production department weren't ready to take them on a such short notice. For a while after we stopped working together, we met up socially a bit more frequently. For one thing, I was 'consulting' (for want of a better expression) on a business she was intending to launch with the backing of an entrepreneur we'd come into contact with while working on the magazines. The idea had been that, once she had an office set up, broadband installed, etc. I had the option of working with her
