The Mad Tea Party

`At any rate I'll never go THERE again!' said Alice as she picked her way through the wood. `It's the stupidest tea-party I ever was at in all my life!'

Illustrated in Deleter #3 Black Drawing Ink with crow quill pen and brush on Canson Smooth 9x12 Bristol Board.

There were three things that inspired me to create this particular illustration of The Mad Tea Party. One was the original John Tenniel artwork which I always have in front of me when I am creating any illustrations based on Alice in Wonderland. Another came from a folk art style painting of Alice in Wonderland by Ayres Houghtelling created in 1949. And the third was Jonathan Miller's teleplay of Alice in Wonderland which aptly featured the late (and quite great) Peter Cook as the Mad Hatter.

John Tenniel's original had Alice looking downright annoyed. I wanted to try and match that :D

That was one of the things I loved about the original art. Is just the expression John Tenniel drew on Alice's face. It was so subtle :-)
