Season of Giving

It was quite the frantic sight. On the side of a highway, in the middle of the night, in the driving snow, three EMTs were desperately digging away snow from around their ambulance’s tires. It was Christmas Eve, and they had been on their way to the nearby hospital to deliver three very precious gifts. Gifts so fragile they wouldn’t last long if they couldn’t get the ambulance out soon. No one was more aware of that than the EMT furiously digging out the back tires. “Mike, take it easy”, the EMT digging towards the front said, “You’re gonna wear yourself out if you keep going like that”. ̶

Night of the Jack-O-Lantern

It was a foggy, moonlit night above a small neighborhood. Running along the streets between the decorated cottages were dozens of costumed children. It was Halloween night, and the young revelers were on parade, knocking on neighbors’ doors, with screams and cheers of “Trick or Treat” echoing through the still night air. Among the hordes of screaming children, were four young friends skipping together; a young which, a boy dressed as a vampire, a ghost in a bed sheet, and a little pink fairy princess. The young friends had already visited most of the houses in the neighborhood, and their treat bags were heavy with their spoi

The crew was taking a final inspection of the limousine. Three men in dark clothes were examining the limo from bumper-to-bumper, making sure everything was in place. Two of them had been working for hours, getting everything ready for the big shot. The parking garage had been cleared out, the lights and cameras were rigged, they even polished the leather interior. All of it for a scene that the crew knew nothing about, even after the third man finally arrived. “When’s everyone else suppose to show up anyway?”, a man wearing a baseball capped asked. “They’ll be here soon enough”, a man wearing a leather j

The teens spent half an hour exploring the eleventh floor, but they found nothing. No patients, no doctors, no spirits of any kind. The only thing they could find were a bunch of empty recovery rooms and nurses stations. But what they also couldn’t find was another way up. Every way that looked like a possible exit only led to a dead end. After a while, they all agreed to stop for a while and decide what to do next. They sat around a moonlit window, contemplating whether they should go back down or keep looking around this floor. Eventually the conversation turned to what happened to each of them when they got separated. Maya went firs

Back in the stairwell, Maya was still sitting at the top of the eleventh floor landing. She had stopped crying, but she was still inconsolable, and still too scared to move from her spot. For the longest time, she stared out a nearby window into the moonlit night. In the relative safety of where she sat, she allowed her mind to wander, imaging what her night would’ve been like if she hadn’t agreed to come to the hospital. Earlier in the week, she had been invited to her friend Spencer’s Halloween party. Spencer’s family was one of the wealthiest in town, and they always hosted a big party on their estate. A 'Whittle' Magic: Carve Your Own Wand (Part 1)

Artisan Crafts Week Part 1A: Introduction to Whittling Greetings, I’m PraeclarusWands (https://www.deviantart.com/praeclaruswands) and today we will learn how to carve our very own Harry Potter-style wands from wood! This two-part workshop is intended for first-time woodworkers, but experienced woodworkers are sure to benefit as well. Start here in Part 1 to learn the basic techniques of whittling. We'll then use those techniques to whittle the overall shape of your wand. In Part 2, we will carve the details of your design, then sand, stain, and apply a protective finish coat to the wood, enhancing your work and creating a final product you’ll be proud to show off. B

A 'Whittle' Magic: Carve Your Own Wand (Part 2)

Artisan Crafts Week Part 2A: Carving the Details Welcome to the final part of A Whittle Magic: Carve Your Own Wand, where we will use basic whittling techniques to carve a Harry Potter-style wand from wood. In Part 1, we practiced some simple whittling cuts and used those cuts to carve the basic shape of the wand. Now, in Part 2, we’ll refine the design by carving the details before moving on to sanding, staining, and finishing. Because we will be working with sharp knives in close proximity to fingers, this workshop is recommended for those 15 years of age and older. Caution!! Woodworking is NOT a risk-free craft. My Bio
Hello all! My name is Matthew, and for as long as I can remember, I've been OBSESSED with everything strange and fantastical. From Fantasy to SciFi, and from the cartoonish to the serious, I've always loved a good story, and I've got a million of my own to tell.

My biggest hope with my art and my writing is to tell all those stories, and hopefully do that one day for a living. I know as artists, we all aspire for that goal, but I know if I work hard enough and believe in myself enough (two things I've struggled with in recent years) I know that I can make it happen.

I have experience with traditional art forms, but my real expertise lies with the digital. I have experience with most Adobe programs, including Flash, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, but for my own personal works I mainly use Open-Source programs like GIMP and Inkscape (because $30 a month is a wee bit out of my current budget ;P). I've also done some 3D sculpting and modelling in the past, using programs like Lightwave and Blender. And I recently started learning how to use the new open source OpenToonz program as a way to get back into 2D animation.

But of course, I also enjoy writing. The works I've shared here so far have been poetry, but I also plan on adding prose fiction, both short and long (ho boy, it'll be long) as I make it. So expect it!
