Commission:barn owl silver box

Commission I did for a client of mine, who is a goldsmith, these boxes are sold in his jewellery shop. Enamel paint on a 925 sterling silver box, about 1 inch in size.

Painting with enamel is so different to normal paint, every layer has to be hardened in an oven before the next layer can be applied. The paint is very sticky and has to be thinned with petrol or a special thinner. The finished picture then gets a glossy clear finish, which has to be applied in a completely dust free environment: every tiny little fluff or dust particle will be seen on the surface! I use enamels that are normally used in the car industry, the quality of those paints is really good and guarantees best results.

Wow very nice! Your patience is impressive to say the least! You don't mind the fumes?

Thank you very much! :)

Sorry for my late reply, I didn't have the chance to spent much on here the last few weeks. Oh the fumes are horrible, I try to work with all windows open. But the scary thing is that I can't smell the thinner any more.... and I know when I started working with these paints, I found the smell of the thinner revolting! Hope I haven't damaged my sense of smell with it.

I don't know about it actually hurting your sense of smell but you can get used to just about any smell. When I was young I worked at a fish plant for awhile and the firt week made me want to throw up everytime I was there and then after awhile I didn't notice the smell at all. I have a great sense of smell still to this day.
Do you wear a mask of any kind?

Uuh, I can imagine that working in a fish factory is quite an experience for every nose! Yes, most of the time I wear a mask, but very often I have to remove it because the items I paint are very small and I have to get so close to see what I'm doing that the mask is actually getting in the way. Good thing is though, I don't spray the paint as you would normally do on big items, so the amount of fumes and particles in the air is not too big.

I can imagine that a mask would be cumbersome! Let's hope it isn't damaging you, I really want to see more of your art:D
