What is DeviantArt? Part 1

Fri Mar 13, 2015, 4:27 PM

environment commission 2013 by TylerEdlinArt
Although it’s getting rarer these days, I sometimes come across people who ask me what exactly “DeviantArt” means.  Before I begin to explain all the amazing things our community has to offer, they sometimes look at me sideways and say, "Deviant, eh? One of
those websites..."

Most marketing experts would never name a site "DeviantArt," because the word "deviant" has multiple meanings that can be interpreted in different  not always positive  ways.  Yet we are the greatest, most diverse art community in existence.  Few branding agencies would ever make DeviantArt its infamous green/gray color.  Yet we love it, and have become known for it.

Where else can you stunning fan artists alongside the best nature photographers in the world?  Or top comic book artists alongside the most talented storytellers of our generation?  We are DeviantArt, the wild card of the Internet, the raw and truthful force of good that inspires the creative minds of today and tomorrow and the next day, too.

Click on any random deviation and see the kindness we bring to our comments.  Click any random Profile and see the love it receives.  Send a Note to one of our members and see the genuine response that comes back to you.  The most beautiful people in the world live here.  The most beautiful people in the world are artists, and they want to share their beauty with you and see what you have to offer, as well.  It's hard to feel down when that kind of love races through every interaction on DeviantArt.

Our mission as a website is clear: to entertain, inspire, and empower the artist in all of us.  From offering new tools for artists to developing more ways to discover each other, everything we work on is driven by this goal and we've planned big things for 2015 and beyond.

We’re honored to be able to bring this to you, but more than that, we’re unbelievably humbled by the community who made it this way and continues to grow and nurture itself organically.

As a company, we find ourselves constantly influenced and generally in awe of the community members that make DeviantArt the unique and cultivated home for artists it's become.  Because of that, we developed four core values to emulate on a company level and refined from the purest source: all of you.

We strive to be kindred; a place where artists can come to be accepted amongst each other without question.  We're magnetic, with vast galleries so full of raw talent, you could be appreciating their art for hours.  Yes, we're a little audacious; unapologetic in our efforts to deviate from the norm, even if it raises a few eyebrows from the mainstream.  And, finally, the art you'll find here is inspiring, from the creators who have built whole careers for themselves on DeviantArt to the mentors who reach out and share knowledge with others just because.

All of that is DeviantArt.  It can be a little hard to understand from the outside looking in, but take a chance, see what the community has to offer, and share the love and inspiration with others. We’re glad you’re here.

P.S. - You are cool, and I am proud of you.

This website has inspired me and helped me become better at drawing.
Sure there was a few hits and misses, even some stuff i with i could hide under piles of classified information in a underground government bunker. But at the end of the day the mistakes we make help us understand our flaws and DeviantArt has helped me find those flaws.

Deviantart is a museum where you can actually interact with the artist. It's the place where art is "living", paintings, stories, photographies, drawings are shared, viewed, criticized, praised, they aren't just put in a frame, they live.

This link is a good illustration of that :D

I would define it as a conglomeration of art from around the world from various forms of artists who share their artistic and creative talents with other artists, whatever that art may be.

Great job Heidi! This is exactly why I joined DA.

I agree, the community of DA in the contemporary Internet is like a safe heaven: I have never been disturbed by any comments on DA. I like to read them, to see how poeople share their gratitude and love. And artists, of course. Their works energize me and sometimes they evoke the desire to live to the fullest even during hard times. I say thank you to all those related to DA.

It is a social networking page that is something between Facebook with much less Big Brother-vibe to it, a snooty design "blog" ran by the staff aaannnnd *drum roll* an awesome community-oriented art platform where everyone can present his works to the world.

And it's basically free.

DA is like a home to me as well. ^^
This community site was what kept me from giving up as an artist altogether.
When I first joined, I was excited to share my art works, and was also blown
away by the art works of others. Soon I realized that this place was filled with
endless opportunities and possibilities. In mid commentary, I even discovered a
gift in the form of interpretation, and since then, combined my writing skills to
support fellow artist. This community helped me to look beyond myself with
a desire to reach out and connect with other fellow artist, to inspire and be inspired.
And in many ways, visiting many galleries felt like a visit to alternate universes, as
every gallery offers a visual invitation to an artist's personal world with unique and
interesting perspective, and style. :)
MJMSTUDIOS2020 Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2015
That's the same thing too. When I first came, I was awe-inspired by tons of artwork posted on there every day that I had to make an account on it. Since then, I've been through a load of changes but I still wish they would give us back the old logo though.

Nevertheless, it doesn't stop me from getting bored here. There's always something new every day. <3
Tenchi8 Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
That's awesome. ^^

And visiting people's art work is like traveling to an alternate dimension, of their
own visual world. I really enjoy sharing feedback in the form of interpretation.
It's encouraging also to read other people's success stories. I get excited for others,
because it means that we can make it too. It's only a matter of time. This site is filled with
endless possibilities. And it's here that we'll find our right connections. :)
MJMSTUDIOS2020 Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2015
The only problem I have with deviantART is the logo change. Sadly they did it and I don't like it.

But everything else as you said before is true. =)
Tenchi8 Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
I read about the change of their logo. I forgot what it meant, but I guess they were trying to
go for a more bolder approach, like something that deviates from a predictable design or something.
It's a visual gamble they are willing to take. ^^

Thanks. :)
MJMSTUDIOS2020 Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2015
I didn't like it one bit. Sad to say but everything else is good as gold (not really).

But I do understand. =)
Still, there are trolls lurking around here.

Looking forward to the big things! It definitely feels like DeviantArt is progressing forwards.

It's always interesting to meet people offline who know about DeviantArt. People in my class have talked about DeviantArt as a place to find other artists, and I think that is one of the greatest things about DeviantArt.

DeviantArt truly is inspiring. I have been inspired by many artists from DA and it's thanks to them that I am where I am now. DA does have its bad side(No Social Network is perfect, after all), but most of the community(from what I've seen so far) is kind, cool and inspiring. Everyday, I feel inspired to do better and more, all because of the amazing artists I find here(and some friends of mine, too). Seriously, I have to thank DA for bringing all these amazing artists together and for making me what I am today. Let DA keep on growing!

I've been here for a decade. This website, way back in 2004, gave me the confidence to continue photography. It continually inspires me to grow as an artist on a daily basis. I've made amazing friends here. While I sometimes sense the overall "community togetherness" is not what it once was, this only makes me more determined to get involved and to try and inspire others to get involved in the community as well :eager: I love to be proven wrong!

I loved reading this. Thanks for sharing it with us

It's never too late to start :D Using the forum and chat networks can really help you connect with other community members. Participating in contests, commenting on someone else's deviation... There are so many ways to get involved. It won't take long for you to get a sense of the community here :aww:

This is the only place I like to share my art, photos, stories, and express myself.  I know there are other places, but DeviantArt is a place that is easy to be and I enjoy it very much.  I intend to stay around for as long as possible too.  I do get the reaction from a few about the Deviant part.  But most are like yeah I am on that sight too or I love that site.  Deviant may be a shocking name, but those curious would check it out whether they like it or not. Though it does help it to stand out above the rest too.

A place where one can feel at home in their fandom. Where artists can come together and help each other grow, while (attempting) to correct those that commit wrongs towards the community.

dA is interesting for a new comer to the art world. It broadens ones self and their own art or writing style while giving room for improvement.

It is intimidating at first, but once you obtain the knowledge you require you may continue on learning in another area you're curious about.

That is what dA is to me: a helpful, (semi)educational location for beginner, novice, and growing artists.

I don't care what people say negativity about the community, staff, artwork shown etc

Everyone has a different media they would like to work with even if it is digital art, traditional art, hell even fetish art could fit in someway, every website is different and yes there are some flaws but in the end ignoring what the community flaws are its a wonderful website and will always be there.

Devious Dreams: The winners! The Devious Dreams campaign launched in March 2019 as a chance for DeviantArt to grant artists the tools they need to make their creative evolution a reality. With over $20,000 in prizing available to make dreams come true, thousands of deviants shared a wide range of creative and heartfelt dreams for their artistic future. We particularly enjoyed seeing the support everyone put forward for each others’ creative goals. Now that the campaign has come to a close, it is our honor to announce the recipients of Devious Dreams grants—a collective of artists from all walks of life with a broad spectrum of creative ideas. Some of these deviants requested drawing tablets so they can create every day. Others asked for traditional art supplies, or photography tools to more efficiently create and share their art. Some asked for crafting supplies like sculpting or sewing materials. The projects each artist put forward were varied and inspired, and it’s our pleasure to help bring these dreams to life.Dream Recipients!
