The Devious Dreams campaign launched on March 18th to provide deviants with an opportunity to reach for their artistic evolution by awarding $20,000 in prizing to deviants with art-inspired dreams. The community’s response to Devious Dreams has been unbelievably inspiring and we want to thank everyone for participating, sharing your creative visions, and even just commenting to support artistic endeavors! If you aren’t familiar with Devious Dreams, there’s still a chance to put your dream forward! We want to hear about an art-related project you wish you could undertake, and what you need in order to make it a reality.

What People Have Said So Far! :eager:

“Part of the excitement is seeing the different types of projects people have come up with. I’ve been reading all the comments since day one and I invite others to do the same. Some people have shared community projects, personal projects, or are simply seeking the means to continue doing the work that they’re currently doing. But they’re all equally as passionate at their craft. It’s definitely going to be interesting to see what happens in the end and, hopefully, even if you don’t leave with a monetary prize, you’ll leave with a new friend (or friends), new knowledge, and an increased drive to get to do what you want in the long run.” —@savagefrog
“It's such a great opportunity for artists to turn a dream into a reality and the best thing is that to apply is as simple as presenting your project in a comment! I think it’s a great initiative from DeviantArt, an opportunity to support the artistic community in a very real way, something that I don't see often in other sites.” —@thiefoworld
“Giving people an opportunity to have their dream granted is great, especially for those who are disabled like myself, or just can't get the funds to make things happen. My group, @My-Lumia is about helping people by giving them characters to bond with and use freely, preferably with the help of a therapist, through the use of creative activities. It’s all about self improvement, facing challenges, having a place to have fun with others, and much more. I was able to obtain a super group as part of the Devious Dreams event, for which I am grateful. Because of the Devious Dreams project, I have gotten more people who are interested in helping, and have moved to make things happen in what ways I can.” —@celestialsunberry

Creative Participation! :wizardhat:

We’ve been avidly reading through the thousands of comments on the Devious Dreams journal and enjoying the wide variety of ideas that everyone has put forward! Some projects have been grand, sweeping ideas that would take a lot of individual work, while others have been more modest projects involving upgrading old hardware or getting art supplies to create more of what they’re already working on. Some of you have shared ideas and are supportive of one another’s projects, like this conversation between @retr0dude and @celiest, and we love that! Thank you for showing support for your fellow artists!

A few of you have come up with some humorous ideas, including a few that reminded us of a familiar Kickstarter project from 2014, like this one from @rubenraphaelart:

Making Dreams a Reality! :star:

Because of the amazing community response to Devious Dreams, we started funding some creative dreams early, and actually awarded an additional $2,500 in prizing last week to help some worthy deviants strive for their creative futures. Ranging from things like pen nibs and Photoshop subscriptions to pottery wheels and oil paints, these deviants put forward their goals and are going to have their chance to explore those ideas!
We also recently awarded another $2,000 in prizing to some deserving deviants as part of a Facebook livestream! Performer and voice actress Erika Ishii hosted the festivities, featuring voice actor Gary Anthony Williams doing readings of literature submitted to DeviantArt, clay sculpting games with @humblehills @ekud and @HeartsUnchained and much more! If you didn’t get a chance to see the stream when it was happening live, have no fear! You can still watch the full video!

Submit Your Idea by March 31st! :fingerscrossed:

Moving forward, we will be awarding $20,000 in prizing to ambitious deviants for their projects on or around April 3rd. If you haven’t participated yet, there is still time! Submit your project in a comment on the Devious Dreams journal by 11:59 PM Pacific Time on March 31st, 2019, for your chance to reach your creative evolution! Submit Your Idea »

Share Your Thoughts! :bump:

We’d like to hear from you! Share one of your favorite project submissions in a comment on this journal, be it yours or someone else's!

Very excitedly awaiting the results! Big thanks to the DA team for giving us all the opportunity. I saw a lot of great projects that fit the criteria very well. Please take your time judging, though some are impatient, it is so much more important that every comment be considered. Some of my favorites are from earlier in the competition or didn't get a big reaction from other commenters, so while its rough to wait, it is better than those gems getting skipped over because of a deadline. Keep at it guys, get sleep and find time to enjoy the day amidst all the comment reading. Now you know hw the response will be if you do a similar competition again, lol. Good luck to everyone who submitted!

I think most of the projects worth winning, I've seen I lot of really unique and stunning ones which I definitely will look after if they win.
Of course I still have a little hope that one of my 3 projects suggested will be chosen. For me it's not only about making a dream come true, it's also about a chance to give something back. Moreover, all the people surrounding me (including family) don't take my art aspirations seriously, for them it's just a wasting of time while I could already have children and work somewhere they approve. So if I win I can show them that there are people supporting me and thinking that what I do is worthy.
O think there are lots of other participants with similar problems... So good luck to everyone again!

This... it's so sad and heartbreaking when the people that are closest to you and suppose to understand you, do the opposite :( and you try to prove them wrong, but it takes... time, lots of it ._. so they don't understand even more, vicious circle

My favorite project is Resting Dragon - poseable dragon which could occasionally blink eyes so it would look more alive than ordinary poseable toy... even may move ears a bit if he "hears" a sound. Budget is surprisingly small since project's author already has most needed tools and materials, and to accomplish his dream he just need paints for leather and inexpensive actuators.

Title: Trix - Dinosaur game, both educational and engaging survival.

Description:
We have assembled a team of artists, 3d-modelers, crazy paleo-nerds and all we need now is a bit of help! We are an indie team, mostly freelancers with a big dream to educate everyone in a fun way. You may compare the idea to Saurian, The Isle or any other dinosaur game, but we're different. Realistic, as realistic we as we can get. We work with the Unreal Engine, as that is where we have our experience.

It's a game set in the prehistoric era, late creteacous in which Trix the Tyrannosaurus Rex comes from. It is based on her entire life, from young to adult to then... Death. It is not "just" a game, it will be educational as well with up-to-date facts, news and other interesting paleo-facts. It will be story based with a strong Walking With Dinosaurs vibe so you get a connection to her, Trix, as a full fledged character throughout her entire life. She will grow, learn, adapt, multiply and battle for her own life as the environment around her changes, too. We have cinematic music tracks, 3D-models that feel alive and breathing with animations that are fluid to give you that extra "I feel alive" moment.
There will be access to free-roam, multiplayer and singleplayer. You can become a flying pterosaur, herd up as a hadrosaur or be a fierce theropod living alongside the big Tyrant King itself.

Plan: Our plan is to push out the models, which are... very, very expensive to say the least and have all been backed by our own pockets and we're reaching a very scarce and empty wallet right now. We need to assemble the map, the environment such as disasters, floods, droughts etc. We have already pushed out a few pieces of music and concepts. We plan on making an early-alpha or a kind of demo within the end of this year, if we get lucky. All the basic AI would have been implemented, the demo area fully rendered, animations, models and all that hard work, done to have something to show off if we are to get that lucky.
It is our first big project, we have experience in modding a few games. Doesn't sound like much but we sure as hell can implement new working things like blueprints, abilities, movement and an AI that thinks for itself.

Budget: Anything above 100 Dollars would be greatly appreciated, so that we can get further than we are.

Title - American Gridiron

Description - I want to attempt to have the pawns created for a board
game I've created.  It is an American strategy football game unlike anything that's been created.  I got the idea while playing chess and thought, 'Someone created chess as a simulation of battle strategy – why not create something similar for football.  I know many people play video games, but while they are enjoyable, the controlling person is only controlling one out of 22 avatars a any given time.  The game I've created is from the perspective of a Coordinator and the player has to control all sections of the team (the line has to attack while the secondary has to maintain coverage, and so on).

Plan - I have all the images and rules created.  I will like enough to create the pawns ( have the pieces designed for the game).

Budget - around $1500 to get a mold or send off for the designs

But at least we presented our projects, so you can also say we have 1 chance in 10,000 to get selected!

This is such a good event! I'm really happy that we can have this possibility, the possibility of achieving a dream, of knowing that there are good people out there willing to help people that they don't even know; learning new techniques and other forms of art, that we could never had if it wasn't for this project, of seeing how other people have their problems too, that we are not alone; and even the possibility of starting a project in wich we had no hope, that we had already given up even before trying! It's amazing that DA is starting to make this kind of thing, in wich gender, sexuality, skills, religion, politic thoughs and more DON'T MATTER, in fact, in wich the dreams and their will to do something is what really matters! Seeing a lot of small artists getting this kind of help really warms my heart, and, again, thank you guys SO, SO MUCH for this opportunity, and I hope in the future, you can make even more events that can help others to achieve their dreams and wishes ♥♥♥

This event is really cool. I haven't personally seen any toxic comments on the main page, which is great because I know that some of the DA community can be quite spiteful about DA's ambitions in these events. Overall, it's really inspiring to see other artists' wishes and sportmanship towards each other. I really think this Devious Dreams event is having a positive affect on the DA community. w00t! Clap Floating hearts 1

Not really toxic comments so much as ridiculous requests. Someone wanted to pitchfork Microsoft and get people to join his campaign to send a letter so that they won't stop supporting Windows 7....
And several others that didn't seem to pay ANY attention to the rules. Like people...it does have to be art related among other things. It also has to be achievable and within a time frame. When I read that part of the rule I was like...so I need to do it on one of my shorter stories, because the graphic novel I really wanted to start on was a much longer series that would be years.
So I tried to pick one that I can do in less than a year since DA reserves the right to capitalize on it and show it around the net. I'm fine with that. Show off my work. But given that it needs to be achievable. Yeah...

Some people just straight up asked for money for food or housing.. not even artsy related food or interior design. Just...really flabbergasted at the fact they skipped literally the entire page and just saw ask for budget. Some people really low-balled themselves. I was trying to be as cheap as possible. But man, I don't think some people actually planned out how expensive their projects really are.

I wholeheartedly agree with you.
I must admit there were a few strange posts I saw asking for a new phone and 'claimed' it was for art. But I still like the fact that the majority of the comments aren't users telling each other to go dive off a cliff.

There's always going to be that one guy; in this case, the few 100 out of 10,000 commenters. Asking for luxuries or a funding for their 24k gold tower. Not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying it's better than all the other crazy shenanigans.

Devious Dreams: The winners! The Devious Dreams campaign launched in March 2019 as a chance for DeviantArt to grant artists the tools they need to make their creative evolution a reality. With over $20,000 in prizing available to make dreams come true, thousands of deviants shared a wide range of creative and heartfelt dreams for their artistic future. We particularly enjoyed seeing the support everyone put forward for each others’ creative goals. Now that the campaign has come to a close, it is our honor to announce the recipients of Devious Dreams grants—a collective of artists from all walks of life with a broad spectrum of creative ideas. Some of these deviants requested drawing tablets so they can create every day. Others asked for traditional art supplies, or photography tools to more efficiently create and share their art. Some asked for crafting supplies like sculpting or sewing materials. The projects each artist put forward were varied and inspired, and it’s our pleasure to help bring these dreams to life.Dream Recipients! Thank You for Your Feedback on Eclipse!

Last week, we announced the Beta launch of DeviantArt Eclipse — a completely redesigned version of DeviantArt that puts more emphasis on artists and their art. As a Beta release, Eclipse is still under development and only available to a small portion of the DeviantArt community. We use the Beta release to gather feedback that allows us to closely analyze deviant engagement and sentiment.

Over 4,000 deviants have already tried Eclipse and many have shared their invaluable and much-appreciated feedback. We’ve received nearly 1,700 individual Eclipse feedback reports — including 407 bug reports, 532 feature requests, and 748 pieces of general commentary. Our team has read through and triaged over 60% of these reports and has a goal of completing all of them in the coming week. Thank you to every deviant who has taken the time to share feedback. Whether you’re someone who provided a few words or several paragraphs of candid response, we appreciate the passion you have for helping us ensure Eclipse will meet the needs of our diverse community.

This Is Just the Beginning of Eclipse

As with most Beta releases, we launched Eclipse knowing there were bugs and highlighted a handful of the most obvious in our release journal. We wanted to release sooner than later so we can begin this journey together – gathering feedback and insights and applying it into our development, fixes, and improvements. Plus, as Beta Testers, this is what you signed up for! We need your deviant-expertise to help identify bugs everything from baby bugs to elusive, exotic bugs.

Based on feedback, it’s clear there are certain areas of Eclipse that are leaps and bounds ahead of the “green site.” It’s also clear there are some things that need to be improved. We expected this and continue to welcome your feedback — the good and the bad. We’re in this together and want to hear from deviants every step of the way.

We're Exploring More Ways To Customize Your Profile

Eclipse provides new ways to personalize your Profile, including the ability to select Header Art for your page, linking to your social media platforms, and stating your commission status. However, with the removal of Custom Box, we heard, loud and clear, that deviants want more options to display content. We’re also in the process of exploring other ways you can customize your Profile. We’ll be sharing tips and varied examples of ways you can really customize Profiles. In the meantime, here’s one example of how @katy-l-wood is testing Eclipse’s current abilities to enhance her Profile.
Many deviants asked for the ability to showcase a single deviation on your profile. This is something we are already working on. We’d also like to clarify that, for the foreseeable future, Custom Boxes within Groups will remain as they are. Groups will eventually be redesigned with Eclipse in mind, but that process won’t be complete for many months. We’ll provide advance notice about any removal of Custom Boxes in Groups.

Addressing Your Other Top Concerns

The new Feedback allows easy viewability of your most recent and unread notifications; however, we’ve seen concerns about Feedback needing improvement as a whole. For example, deviants report it’s cumbersome to remove notifications and it’s hard to remove notifications in bulk. We’ll be making the “remove” button more accessible so that you can one-click remove (or one-click save) just as you could on the “green site.” We’re still reviewing the experience of mass removing feedback and hope to have updates soon.We are currently working on issues regarding Header Art and avatars – specifically, their size and quality. Icon codes and plz accounts will be coming soon to Eclipse. :iconlaplz:The new text editor makes it easy to write Literature, with the option to add formatting and illustrations to your work. That said, the Literature experience in Eclipse is still a work in progress. As we mentioned in the Beta journal, using Literature and journal thumbnails is not yet finished. Literature thumbnails in the sidebar (under “More Like This”) are also not yet finished.Improving the display of Literature thumbnails is something our Product and UX teams are already actively working on improving.Having a “Show More” link on deviation descriptions and comments allows for a cleaner viewing experience; however, based on feedback, we've removed "Show More" from deviation descriptions and comments. While search in Gallery, Favourites, and Journals didn’t make it into the Beta version of Eclipse, it’s our aim to bring this functionality to Eclipse.Several deviants brought up that the ability to include thumbs by pasting a URL (or thumb code) is not currently possible. We mentioned this in the original announcement, but we want to reiterate this is not working as intended and will be implemented in the future.

Of course, this isn’t a complete list. It represents our first step at addressing some of your top concerns and we’ll be sharing more responses and updates — including bug fixes — in the weeks ahead.

Keep it Coming!

In the release process, things are constantly evolving as we gain insights and implement updates. Please keep in mind these updates can take time to get used to. As you continue to explore Eclipse, share your thoughts and concerns through the Eclipse overall feedback or bug report/feature request forms. While we encourage general discussion in the journal comments, using the official form allows us to triage and act on feedback in a quicker, more manageable way.

We also want to give a shout-out to the amazing deviants who’ve produced really thorough Eclipse reviews:

Stay tuned for more, and keep the bug reports and feature requests coming!Change LogThe "add to favorites" panel on deviation pages now allows you to select multiple collections. (Suggested by @wynbird, @battlefairies, and many others)On the Daily Deviations page, literature now includes preview text. Various other smaller bug fixes and stability improvementsThe new "add to favorites" panel lets you easily add a deviation to many Collections. (Artwork: hidden view by @umbatman)Literature thumbs — including on the Daily Deviations page — now include preview text.Using the New Bio EditorTry the new Eclipse bio editor! When adding a bio to your Eclipse profile, we'll start you off with your bio from the old site. Please keep in mind that some elements, such as thumbnails, were not able to be transitioned to the new editor, however you can still add them to your bio. We recommend trying the new image and gallery features to share your favorite artwork in your bio. Also note that due to migration issues, bios of deviants who are not on Eclipse are static, meaning if they update them on the old site, the changes will not be reflected on Eclipse until that deviant switches to Eclipse and edits their bio using the new editor.
