About a year and a half ago, we posted a journal discussing how DeviantArt’s acquisition would grant us the resources to make many positive changes for the site.  Thus far, a lot of such improvements haven’t been entirely obvious  like the many new hires across all departments (we've more than doubled our staff!) or upgrades to the tools we use behind-the-scenes.  All of this was done in order to bring you big-ticket changes, including a much-improved and redesigned site.

We've approached the redesign with a lot of consideration, which is why it’s been in development for so long.  Not only do there continue to be lengthy internal conversations discussing every piece and every feature in explicit detail, but we’ve also involved the DeviantArt community extensively.

How We’re Getting Community Input

In-Person Interviews:

Over the past few months, we conducted one-on-one interviews with deviants in cities around the world — Hollywood, Manhattan, Toronto, Tel Aviv, and Kiev, just to name a few.  These extensive, face-to-face conversations provide an in-depth picture about how deviants use the site and how upcoming changes might impact them.  We love being able to spend time with deviants and look forward to continuing the process.

Online Surveys:

Several surveys have been conducted to gauge how deviants feel about DeviantArt today vs. potential changes or features that may be coming in the future.  Depending on its goal, a survey might be made available to all deviants or targeted to a sub-set of specific deviants.  The feedback gained is critical to shaping the outcome and priority of DeviantArt's roadmap.

Advisory Board:

Founded in 2017, the Advisory Board is comprised of a diverse group of deviants whose talents and interests represent the depth and breadth of everything DeviantArt has to offer.  The group of roughly 50 deviants acts as a place where staff members and deviants can interact to gain feedback, share mock-ups and designs, and connect with each other on a personal level.  (Currently, the Advisory Board is invite-only; however, if you're interested in joining, please leave a comment on this journal.)

You Can Be Involved Too!

More surveys and face-to-face interviews are on the way, and we want to hear from as many deviants as possible.  These are great opportunities for you to provide input before any updates launch, so please keep an eye on your Notifications and notes, as this is where we reach out to deviants.  Your feedback helps us improve DeviantArt in ways that most positively impact everyone, allowing us to deliver more of what you want.

An Improved, Simplified Experience

We promise we aren't taking this process lightly.  Many deviants are passionate about the way DeviantArt functions, but we also know there are improvements that you want to see.  We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make DeviantArt a modern and unified experience, and we deeply believe the upcoming changes will make your time spent here exponentially better.

On top of visual changes, we'll be making some other adjustments  like the way things are named and where they appear.  All of these decisions are informed by analysis of real user behavior, for both deviants and casual visitors to the site.  Our goal is to present the experiences we all love at DeviantArt more clearly and reduce instances of confusion, streamlining things that may be over-complicated.  Ultimately, this should improve participation from everybody — better, clearer ways to connect you with things that matter to you most means more favourites, comments, and deviousness to the site as a whole!

Stay Tuned

As DeviantArt grows, our mission hasn’t changed.  We believe in our community, we believe in your creativeness, and we want to grow with you.  You'll be hearing much more about the "new" DeviantArt in the coming months, and we hope you’ll stick around for the ride!  In the meantime, check out a few of the journals that deviants have written about their user feedback experiences with us:
1 by danlev

Over twenty members of DeviantArt's Product, User Experience, User Interface, and Marketing teams participated in a week solely dedicated to receiving in-person user feedback.  Here are a few team members plastered in a room with feedback from deviants! Banananation77, danlev, Heidi, heyheybuddy, LaurenKitsune, linakononenko, Luyda, NataliGagarina, NeitleyW, nicolealundgren, NWeiss, Roihim, Ruthygi, starvingartist, thedatadoctor, Tiamattson, Tiorion-ua, Tomergr, tomisagirl, UncleMartyPants uxvital, Wannabby, yonatanbuni  (not all pictured).

Deviants who participated in our in-person user interviews received DeviantArt swag... and delicious cupcakes!

Questions

  1. Is there a feature or aspect of DeviantArt that took you a while to understand?
  2. What do you find valuable or unique about DeviantArt (the site) or the community?
  3. I would want a DeviantArt redesign to look more __________.

GDPR and Privacy Policy Update

Tue May 22, 2018, 10:27 AM by Heidi:iconheidi:

DeviantArt is committed to providing all deviants with a safe and fun environment to create and grow — and this commitment includes maintaining your privacy and security.

You’ve likely already received many emails and notifications about privacy updates from websites and apps where you have accounts. This is because the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) places new responsibilities on organizations that collect data from European Union residents and is designed to grant people more control over such data.

In accordance with GDPR, DeviantArt is building a tool that allows European Union deviants to:

  • Access Their Data: On request, deviants can see what data we have on file, what we’re using the data for, and with whom we are sharing the data.

  • Permanently Delete Their Data: Deviants may review and permanently delete certain data. A log of deletion requests will be kept for security purposes.

These changes will be in effect starting May 25th, 2018. DeviantArt has always respected and protected the privacy of our community and will continue to do so in the future. As part of that commitment, and in preparation for new European Union data protection laws, we're updating our Privacy Policy.

For more information about the changes, please visit this article in the DeviantArt Knowledge Base.

Fraud Protection for Points

Thu Apr 12, 2018, 4:57 AM by Heidi:iconheidi:

DeviantArt is always looking for the best ways to serve deviants, and in 2010 we introduced DeviantArt Points – our virtual currency.

Points can be used in a variety of ways, including rewarding fellow deviants for a job well done, supporting artists through commissions, buying Prints, or simply giving a gift with love.  In certain circumstances, like when earning royalties through the Commissions widget or Prints sales, Points can also be exchanged and redeemed for real money.

Any time real money is involved, there are inevitably a small number of “bad actors” who seek to game the system and take advantage of it.  To ensure the safety and security of our community when engaging in the Points ecosystem, we've recently enhanced our fraud detection tools and added new members to DeviantArt's Trust and Safety team.  With the addition of these tools and team members, we will be able to detect and investigate potential instances of Points fraud and/or bad actors abusing the system faster and more thoroughly than ever before.  In the event we find evidence of abuse that violates the Terms and Conditions for Points, we will take action accordingly.

We care deeply about our community aiming to provide all deviants with a safe and fun environment to create and grow.  This commitment to safety includes ensuring deviants have confidence when using DeviantArt Points and engaging with other deviants who do the same.

If you have specific questions or concerns regarding Points, please submit a Help Desk ticket and someone from our Community Operations team would be happy to assist you.

Happy Holidays from DeviantArt!

Sun Dec 24, 2017, 11:14 AM by Heidi:iconheidi:
‘Twas the night before Christmas,
When all through D.A.,
Dear Santy was browsing
(‘stead of filling his sleigh).

The deviants were nestled
All snug in their arts,
While visions of masterpieces
Danced in their hearts.

Back at his workshop,
There arose such a clatter,
Santa sprang from his desk chair
To see what was the matter.

An elf skidded into
Santa’s computer pavilion,
Shouting, “We’ve forgotten some gifts!
About 44 million!”

The jolly elf’s eyes
Grew three sizes that day.
“How could this happen?
There’s no room on the sleigh!”

“There’s that list you checked twice,
And then there’s the new one,
For people you wanted
To gift devious fun.”

Santa glanced at his smart watch --
Quarter till midnight it struck --
And said, “We still have some time,
With some magic and luck!”

Away they both flew
To the cavernous stables
Where nine reindeer live --
Or so say the fables.

The tales also tell
Of an ancient appliance
That spews Holiday Cheer.
(Santa’s way into science.)

Tucked into a corner,
By the back of the wall,
Santa threw down a lever,
Changing Christmas for all.

The Cheer never faltered,
But Santa’s hacked creation,
Now spewed forth something else --
Artistic Inspiration.

44 Million Deviants
The whole world around
Created and uploaded,
Imaginations Unbound!

For Santa’s great wish
Was for new items to enter
Your Watch and your Feedback
Of your Notifications Center!

If you’ve X’d all your Notifs
On this Christmas Eve so starry
Then this Journal shall be Santy’s gift to you.
(Sorry!)

With Inspiration delivered,
Santa’s night could begin,
Bringing arts, high-tech gadgets,
Empty notebooks for the win!

He sprang to his sleigh,
With his 9 reindeer mounts,
And away they all flew
(Like your future fave counts!)

The elf heard him exclaim --
Inspiration filling his heart --
“Happy Christmas to all,
And to all a good art!”

Celebrating 17 Years of DeviantArt!

Seventeen years ago, DeviantArt launched what would soon become the world’s largest online art community.
August 7th marks the day we sprang onto the Internet, and we want to celebrate this momentous occasion by thanking deviants all around the globe for your inspiration, entertainment, and more than a little deviousness.

For some, birthdays are a time of reflection, an opportunity, once a year, to consider where we were and what it took to transform into what we are today. That part is clear -- deviants like you shared your comments and faves, mentored artists in need, learned from your heroes, and in transforming DeviantArt into the welcoming community you know and love, you yourselves transformed. Look at the first deviation in your gallery. Through hard work and practice, you’ve transformed your skills, transformed yourselves, and transformed others through your inspiration and support.

In this spirit of transformation, we invite you to celebrate with us. Think of the artist you’ve become, where you began, and what lies ahead. Then grab some cake and balloons, and come along for the ride. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you!

Humble beginnings always have the potential for greatness. For this community event, we’re inviting you to take an unassuming design and unlock its potential. Let your imagination know no limits, and watch as a community transforms a simple scribble into countless breathtaking works of art.

Download the Template

Open the template in the image editing software of your choice, or print it if you'd like to work traditionally. Then, use the template's lines as starting points to create your own masterpiece!

Remember:

  • The template’s transformation can have any theme. It doesn't have to be birthday-related.
  • Do not resize, rotate, flip, or alter the template in any way.
  • Transform the template into a new, finished piece of art.
Important: To receive the exclusive 17th Birthday Badge, you must use this button when submitting your finished template.
  • The 17th Birthday Scribble Challenge is open to all DeviantArt members.
  • Submit as many scribble templates as you’d like.
  • Use the deviation description to tag other deviants you want to participate in the Scribble Challenge.
  • All submissions must adhere to DeviantArt’s normal Terms of Service and Etiquette standards.

Finally, the answer to the question you’re all scrolling to find! Yes, you’ll get a Birthday Badge of your very own for taking part in this slice of devious community fun. Simply upload your completed work of art into the correct category, and the coveted 17th Birthday Badge will be yours.

Please note:

DeviantArt staff may remove a badge if a deviant’s contribution doesn’t demonstrate the true spirit of our community.

For 10 years, Patricio Betteo (betteo) has splashed his distinctive style all over DeviantArt. A model of community spirit, enthusiasm, and inspiration, betteo was born and raised in Mexico by Uruguayan and Chilean parents, who so nurtured his love of art, he’s now able to pay it forward with stunningly vibrant illustrations in children’s books and magazines. His “non-lucrative side missions” include creating comics, painting, juggling, and eating the cores of apples to absorb their nutritive power.

Birthdays are a chance to look ahead. Moving forward, you’re going to see even more transformation, as DeviantArt shakes off our awkward teenage years and enters the next phase of transformation to reach more, inspire more, and nurture more of your creative nature than ever before.

May the 4th: The Force Was Strong

This May the 4th, we asked the DeviantArt community to pay tribute to all the iconic Star Wars characters and scenes we know and love.  After engaging in scruffy, nerf-herding levels of debate around who shot first and which aspects of the Star Wars universe should be embraced and which should go the way of Luke’s tauntaun, deviant Jedi the world over commented with thousands of pieces of galactically inspirational fan art. Thanks to the work of so many of you, a great balance was brought to the Force!

Celebrating Star Wars Day

Celebrating Star Wars Day

This year, on May the 4th, DeviantArt wants to pay tribute to all the amazing artists who continue to produce inspired works as dedicated fans to honor the Star Wars characters and iconic scenes we know and love… and even the ones that cause the hate to flow through us. From strapping Han Solo to laughing Salacious Crumb, from Jar Jar’s clumsiness to K-2SO’s brutal honesty, the Star Wars Universe (and, dare we mention, the Expanded Universe) is well-represented in the DeviantArt community.

Last winter brought the sad news of Carrie Fisher’s passing. As often happens when a voice of such illumination is suddenly silenced, our community reacted in the best way they knew how -- with an outpouring of emotional works of art, each conveying the strength and regality of her most famous role.

In the weeks after “The Last Jedi” teaser trailer and Star Wars Celebration, it seems the world is basking in an especially bright lightsaber-like afterglow. Of course, some diehard fans would say the sparks of that glow began a long time ago (the ‘70s -- and not in a galaxy far, far away), but with “Rebels,” “Battlefront,” and “Rogue One” easing the pain of wait time between final-trilogy installments, fans can now consume their favorite worlds, from Alderaan to Yavin Prime, frequently and through just about any medium.

If you’re looking to celebrate this holiday with us, strap in, and don’t tell us the odds, because we’re going to take you through a Kessel Run of art in less than 12 parsecs.

All deviants who comment on this journal by answering the three prompts below will receive a special May the 4th tribute badge that will display on your Profile for all to see.

DeviantArt staff may remove a badge if a deviant’s comment or contribution doesn’t demonstrate the true spirit of fandom.
  • Who shot first: Han Solo or Greedo?
  • What aspects of the Star Wars Universe really get your midi-chlorians flowing, whether passionately or angrily?
  • What Star Wars fan art goes above and beyond capturing a scene or character perfectly?

Copy the above questions into a comment on this journal. Link to your favorite fan art deviations, and they’ll automatically be displayed as thumbnails!

Happy Holidays from DeviantArt!

Sat Dec 24, 2016, 12:57 AM by Heidi:iconheidi:
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through D.A.
All the creatures were stirring. They were on holiday!
A cold winter's night, with some days off for break's
The perfect time for artists to cure those art-aches.

The artists were nestled with the tools of their station,
With scrolling hands ready to find inspiration.
There was one young artist logging on with a smile
To sit back and think of what they hadn't in a while.

'Twas 10 years to the day since they'd made this account.
If they'd only known then what surprises would mount.
The features, the layouts, the widgets, the glee,
the DeviantMeets, the app, and the community.

In a world brimming with art, competition seems tough,
and it's easy -- alone -- to feel not good enough.
But the community on DeviantArt is so vast,
A new artist is kindred, without needing to ask.

One's watchers bring support, encouragement, praise,
criticism with care, a rare sight these days.
And then there are artists you yourself get to find
who bring inspiration and tutorials of all kinds.

Our young deviant friend has grown these last years,
Making friends, asking questions, overcoming art fears.
And of course they've paid forward the community love,
When newbies come seeking answers from above.

Oh! Our artist's nostalgia must come to an end.
They need to deliver an art gift to a friend.
But they'll always cherish the community that gave them their start.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good art!
╰( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )つ──🎨*:・゚

–Creatively crafted by LaurenKitsune

Our sincere thanks ♥

As staff members, we get to feel the love from the community every day, but it's always humbling to hear from deviants whose individual experiences over the years have brought them friends from around the world and shaped the artists they've become.

We'd like to thank the community for the gift you give us all year round -- nurturing and taking part in the site all of us love so much. After sixteen years, you're what we're all here for and it's the spirit of the community that keeps DeviantArt's running.

Wishing you and yours health and happiness this holiday season.
