We use a program called Adobe Flash Professional, but it is kind of expensive. There are programs like Scratch and Construct 2 that let you make small games for free :)

Emerald? lol, back in the day... more than 10 years ago now, I started the first version of our website. Back then I called myself the "Emerald Empress". Eventually the site became Emerald Activities, and Emerald got her name from there ;)

Thanks!

I just do the art and design them, my boyfriend does the code. But yes, we have spent a very long time getting the Magic Makers to this point, lol, years in fact. Its worth it though, I love seeing what people make in them :)

For my Flash programs [link] I do everything myself, from artwork to programming, and also the music. ^_____^

Ya, I was browsing through there earlier, there is some cute stuff. I was reading through the poser tutorials and such. I have never really used poser (I make and pose my stuff in the programs I learned at school... so maya, xsi, mudbox, z-brush), but its really interesting to see what you can do with it.

I use to do my own programming... back in the day, lol. I didn't work in flash at the time, just java script and stuff. I have had my web page with drag and drop games on it for a very long time. But when Brad started trying to date me, he gave me a save button for my dolls. It was the begining of the end, lmao. I haven't let the poor man rest in a very long time now. I sort of got him into flash and now into casual game design (before this he did mostly web programming and 3d animation).

I just have so many ideas, and they are so much quicker to realize with both of us than it was on my own. I use to mess around with game engines and such, trying to make them do what I saw in my head. Its sooo much better that he can just build it, lol. We have to google a lot of stuff, since we are both self taught for most of this. But it really is wonderful. There is nothing we would like more than to make our living this way :)

I wish that we could do our own music, but Brad only plays drums (not so great for background music, lol) and I have put all my efforts into the visual arts. We have discovered lots of great music thats free for different types of projects though, so thats how we have been solving that problem for now.

Gah, I talk to much, lol.

You are a very lucky person - I wish I had someone to share my creative mind with. I have to learn and do everything myself, and have nobody to ask when I have questions. -_-

Ya, its really wonderful. We can't always help each other, but even having someone to bounce ideas off is worth while. I never thought I would luck out like this in life, but I would never go back. Even though we spend far too many friday nights "working" lol.

On the other hand though, I don't think it needs to be a partner. You make the right friends and you will get the feedback and such you need. I use to work with my parents and friends a lot too on the art and such I use to do :)

I see what you mean, but nobody I know in real life or the web actually knows anything about AS3 programming. Most people are still using AS2 and/or cannot answer my more advanced AS3 questions (or even the simple ones). I have signed up with ActionScript forums, and still can't get a usable answer (or any answer at all) whenever I get tied up.

Over my desk I have this growing pile of Flash/AS3 programming books, but they only go up to a certain level and stop there. Even the books that claim to be advanced don't really go that far. Sometimes I find a new book that covers 95% the same contents as other books I already have, but I buy it because of one single chapter that talks about something I wanted to learn. By now I believe more than half my Flash books are on that category, so it can be really frustrating.

How cool it would be to know someone who actually knows AS3 and I could just ask them directly. Sounds like a dream to me. Not only AS3, but 3D modeling, color theory, and all the other things I use everyday. ^^

Well, neither of us really had real life help like that either. Brad went to school for 3d animation, not the stuff we do now. And by the time I went school (studio art, for colour theory and such), I had already mastered most of what they showed me. It was still good for my self confidence though. I did go to school for 3d modeling just last year, but I haven't finished my demo reel for that yet (or used it for too much). I got side tracked by our site stuff.

As far as programming goes... your best bet is to learn about programming in general. That is what Brad has done. We go to the library and get stacks of books on design patterns, flash, object oriented programming, game design, etc... Its much cheaper than buying them ;)

As far as modeling, colour theory, etc... reference is your best friend. If you are trying to light something in a cool way, find a photo that uses similar lighting and try to mimic it. If you are drawing a character, colour pick a pallette from somewhere and make sure you have reference for every part of them. If its a fantasy creature, find real life creatures and such that you can combine to create it (A cats pose for a dragon for example). Doing that stuff again and again is what teaches you those things. Eventually, you just know how your colours should look, where your muscles attach, where you should exagerate detail, and where you should tone it down.

My work has improved by leaps and bounds since I started doing these makers. Every day I learn more about anatomy, and composition. If you want an example... compare the horse maker to the animal maker. The animal maker is so much better it isn't even funny :P And it took me a fraction of the time to redesign my site layout this time compared to last. I still have a really long way to go, but practice and reference are definatly the way to get there.

It is nice to have someone to ask when you get really stuck, but at the same time most of those people got where they are the same way you are now ;) What I really look for, and what I found with Brad, is someone who can share the excitement of creation, and who is there to bounce ideas off :)
