? WHAT IS #smaugust2017 ?
For the month of August 2017 I created one of a kind dragon drawings all month long! Its called #smaugust , a monthly themed challenge to celebrate and engage with the online fantasy art community. Specifically, I explored and expanded the lore of dragons within my own IP, a magical world called "Terratoff"
STORY:
"The "Mighty Sea Wyvern" is the most reclusive and antisocial of the Terratoffian Dragon breeds. They prefer a solitary lifestyle, rarely living within communities that commingle with other types of creatures.
A Sea Wyvern will typically make its home in a cave within the slippery mountains by the sea, which offers many perks. First, it's far away from where most creatures will try to wander, leaving the Wyvern to live in relative peace and quiet. Second, they are close to their main food source, and a spectacular view! Third, their children are kept safely out of reach from predators.
Unlike the other dragon breeds, Sea Wyverns lack hard scales to protect them in a fight. Their skin is slippery like and eel, and their scales resemble those of a fish. This allows them to dive in and out of the water with ease, but leaves youngsters vulnerable until they learn other means of defense.
Parents keep a close eye on their offspring until they learn how to fly and swim. They typically bring their children to the beaches to play and acquaint themselves with the sea. This one has made its first rival/friend, a little crab who is not afraid to tackle the fearsome winged creature! (Who is also totally adorable)"
! THE PROCESS !
My process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with colored graphite to draft the idea. Next I add colored pencils to add dimension and define the lines. Lastly, charcoal colored graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add detail. The colored sketch remains intact and subtly visible beneath the charcoal color of the final drawing. This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the method and experience of creating it.
