Description

LIGHT: Black Cat & Amnesia Girl is an intriguing mix between Little Nightmares and Stray, where you play as a black cat guiding an amnesiac girl through four maze-like levels, each with its own distinct style.

Despite some notable YouTubers playing the demo, none of them seemed to cover the full release. I can’t help but wonder—did they simply forget about it, or did they play it and decide they didn’t like it?

Whatever the case, I want to share my thoughts. Overall, I really enjoyed the game—the puzzles, the storyline, and the general gameplay kept me engaged all the way to the end. However, there were some frustrating elements: the camera constantly zooming in and out, the clunky controls, and some puzzles that, while not necessarily difficult, became tedious due to repeated resets. I nearly rage-quit at times, but my appreciation for the game pushed me to see it through. I’d still give it a thumbs-up, but be warned—it can be annoying. Honestly, I’m so over it now that I don’t even feel like going back to collect the remaining achievements.

Visually, the game’s artistic design isn’t the most memorable, but I do appreciate the subtle details: the way the bed deforms when stepped on, the red glow on the girl’s mask when the cat calls for attention. Learning that DayLight is a small indie studio working with a limited budget makes me respect the effort even more.

Since the characters don’t have official names, I’ll refer to the amnesiac girl as Alicia and the black cat as Salem.

The game begins underwater, where a door opens, revealing a cat mask on the floor. The mask starts to float, dark particles swirl around it, and Salem is brought to life.

Upon entering the next room, Salem finds a portal that leads to Alicia—who is trapped in a spider’s web, seemingly becoming corrupted, her body posed in a crucifixion-like stance. Salem breaks off a piece of his mask and gives it to Alicia. The fragment transforms into a hairpin (though I would’ve preferred if she actually wore the mask). Once the hairpin is placed in Alicia’s hair, she is freed.

Fast-forward to the ending: after a sudden "To Be Continued" message (why??), Alicia and Salem find themselves in a new area where a mysterious white-haired woman reappears. Alicia stops her by flipping levers with symbols matching the bosses, triggering a boss rush where they must fight all the previous enemies again.

Afterward, they confront the white-haired woman herself—under the ominous gaze of a giant eye in the sky. During the battle, the woman captures Alicia and begins draining her energy, causing her mask hairpin to fall out. As this happens, Salem retrieves the other half of the mask, puts it back together, and casts a powerful spell that defeats the woman and frees Alicia.

At this moment, a flashback plays:

The giant eye was being experimented on, and in retaliation, it took control of the past versions of the butler, the white-haired woman, and the wolf and spider bosses.

The white-haired woman took possessed the cat mask but failed to use it properly—her hands broke as she fully transformed into her monstrous present-day self.

The scene ends, and back in the present, both Salem and the white-haired woman disappear, likely due to the spell. Alicia, now alone, looks up to see someone approaching her.

And then… the game ends.

Oof.

Since the game is intentionally vague, here’s my theory:

The past versions of the butler and the white-haired woman were Alicia’s parents. The white-haired woman was a scientist and discovered the giant eye—a dark entity with immense power—and began experimenting on it. At some point, she found the cat mask, realizing it could counteract the eye’s magic and kept it as a precaution.

However, the giant eye eventually turned against them, corrupting Alicia’s parents, the wolf, and the spider, transforming them into the bosses we see in the game. Their only remaining objective? Find Alicia.

Meanwhile, Alicia was protected from the giant eye thanks to a backup plan—her parents placed her in a tree within a pocket dimension. Unfortunately, while this shielded her from full corruption, the giant eye’s magic still almost got to her.

The mask’s magic then intervened, creating Salem—a manifestation of Alicia’s old pet—to free her and help her fight back.

If the developers decide to make a sequel, here’s my guess:

The person Alicia sees at the end could be another scientist who worked with her mother and is now trying to stop the giant eye.

Or, it could actually be Alicia’s mother in her restored human form, now determined to fix her past mistakes.

Either way, Alicia would likely be the protagonist of the next game, wielding the mask’s power to put an end to the giant eye once and for all.

Despite its flaws, LIGHT: Black Cat & Amnesia Girl has a lot of potential. While it’s not perfect, I appreciate what the developers were aiming for and I’d love to see more of this world—especially if they continue the story.
