(Note: You know, Estrella is my favorite queen, and it’s because I feel truly seen in her. We share so much in common, same skin color, same hair color, and even the same struggles with not having the greatest handwriting. It’s rare to see a character like that, one who reflects who I am in such a personal way, and that’s why she resonates with me so deeply. Don’t get me wrong, though, there’s one aspect of her portrayal that I didn’t particularly like, and that’s her original poem. It really rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like it was reducing her to this stereotype of being lazy or inadequate, which came off as so distasteful, especially for the Queen with the darkest skin. It just didn’t sit well with me. Thankfully, my friend James helped improve her poem by a margin, and the new version feels much more respectful and empowering. This version celebrates her artistry and perseverance, making her journey about passion and talent rather than focusing on what she supposedly couldn't do, and I feel even more connected to her now.)
