I'm reposting this in various places because I need to update a few people on my name change (because it's kind of important).
So I need to start of this with mentioning that I am not in fact Caitlin Lukiss as of this very moment. It has nothing to do with my marriage-- that is official and my husband and I are officially wed.
The problem here lies in that apparently you cannot just go and change both of your names when you are married, like we thought. It's only free, and that easy, if the woman is changing their name to take her husband's name. The person who filled everything out for us, and changed our names to Lukiss at the social security office, had read the rules incorrectly and thought what she had to follow only applied to if two people are hyphenating their name-- the rule being that you have to open up a court case (which would be $400) to change both of your last names, and the judge has to approve.
So today, Brandon and I had intended to go and get our driver's license redone with our new names, and current address. We took the photos for the new licenses but they needed a "proof of name change" document. So we go upstairs to the County Clerk's office and are informed that we should not have been able to acquire new social security cards because we would have had to go through court and the court document would have been all we would have needed to provide as proof.
So we go over to the social security office and they brought out a guy that was so chill, so helpful, and fixed the problem for us. He even brought out the girl who had done the name change and made sure to show her what's what and what she did wrong. I wasn't even mad at her, she actually read the rules, just thought it applied to something else.
What I am MAD about is that I've gone through 10 or more different people at the DMV, County Clerk's Office, the information desks, the Social Security Office, and been down to Dade City for all of this well in advance to Brandon and I even being married, to make sure that this name change would be official, and that we had done everything correctly, and legally. We came prepared, and when not prepared, returned prepared with what we needed, as far as we were made aware. And STILL somehow at the end of it all, after all of the people we spoke to, and somehow got our new and changed social security cards through, NO ONE was able to tell us that if we both wanted to change our last names that we would have to open a court case to do so.
This is where I have the fear that I am in the Caitlin Serviss show, like the Truman show movie, and everyone we talk to are actors that don't actually know how to do the official things they are put in the position for, because I am the only one they would have to do this for.
You cannot tell me that Brandon and I are the ONLY people in EXISTENCE that have wanted to change both of their last names to something other than what we were born with. That cannot be a thing. I seriously cannot believe that getting married, and getting your name changed in any form or fashion had to be so complicated. How do people do this and then change their mind in a week? Do they have an easier time doing so?
Now I have to undo the stuff I've been doing in the last two weeks. I have to call Food Stamps tomorrow because now I'm worried my application will be considered fraud since it is under a different name than our current (and official) names. I cannot change my facebook name back for some annoying amount of days. And if I want to go make Lukiss official, I have to open a court case and pay $400+ just to do that.
