SoE - Lesson Learned by HeartGear SoE - Lesson Learned by HeartGear

The 11th installment of SoE!

I sure do like the repeat shot don't I? I think it's because of my
love of strips, and they use that a lot.

Hopefully it's obvious how she used the sharp object to cut
herself free, but for those not in the know: she used the sharp
object to cut herself free. It's a multi-tool! Picking locks and
cutting ropes '_'

I'm starting to think maybe I should jump back into inking these
guys. It took me longer to throw down the basic color than it
took me to draw the danged thing. At least with inked lines the
selection tool is really quick... or you can use paint bucket and
select contiguous and all you do is click!

But I sure do enjoy the sensitivity with pencils. Admittedly, I
really like SnowKing's bondage work [link] for the same reason.
But Nomad's ink work is pretty sweet [link] .

BESIDES the point. Taking some advice I heard from the Art
and Story podcast I'm emulating Com's work from Gonzo's
Romeo and Juliet... and also some disney stuff for our turtle
friend. I like what Jerzy said about how copying can help you
explore what you like about a style, and I sure do like this style.

OH! And I totally had a breakthrough with the word baloons.
That last one is exactly what I want, more hand drawn and
manga-ish rather than the perfectly symmetrical elipses.
Sometimes those elipses are useful, but othertimes they come
across as cold and mechanical. I like a little more emotion in
my work. ^^

Eventually I want to start growing into more varied panel
compositions. I sure do keep coming back to the closeup on the
face, and the over the shoulder shot for the turtle. Maybe that's
just because of the sitch though.

Thanks for stopping by! If you read all of this rambling
description, than bravo! I don't think I would have. ._.

Mario/Metroid (c) Nintendo

P.S. A special thanks to Broken Logic and Konnidor for their
thoughtful critiques! I really appreciate the input!

Pros: The head shot of Samus in panel 1 is very detailed and dynamic, you made sure to to get every curve and groove correct. The flow of events between panels 2 and 3 are done well and have no continuity errors. And the flow of facial expressions is spot on in panels 2 & 3.

Cons: I know that you said up front that the outlining for the pages would be sketchy for time reasons, and for the most part it's unnoticeable in large scenes like panels 2 & 3 but for close ups like panel 1 it becomes very noticeable. Its more of a nitpick than a complaint but I thought I'd give my two cents about that.

Overall it is a very solid page that delivers cute comedy a dynamic close up of Samus. I cannot wait for the next panel, and hope this critique is helpful.

he looks so cute like an anime character. P.S that was smart

Ah, so perhaps Samus' ropework was not the only thing to respawn with her second life! It does make sense, though; as tools usually are restored for use after a character dies in the Mario series of games....

I quite like how you had Samus remove her gag and start speaking even though her legs were still bound by the aforementioned ropework, as it also makes sense that even the fairly inattentive Red Koopa Sentry would only fail to notice her cutting her arm bindings rather than be oblivious to the entire process of her claiming her (partial) freedom, as he would be slightly more on-guard after the first time this happened (maybe). However, this may also suggest that perhaps the former bounty hunter is once again displaying a pinch of overconfidence....

Awesome as always! :)

I think this may be my favorite panel so far. Seeing Samus pull down the gag, and TALKING, after the revelation of the last panel is fantastic rebuttal.  Terrific use of dialogue too. Panel 1 is fierce and Panel 3 is funny.

This is definitely my favourite page of the series.  Love her innocent-looking expression at the end.

LOL!! Full of surprises, eh, Samus?

"It's dangerous to go alone, take this"

Seems that might be what's left of her arsenal (though looks handy enough). Then again, Samus is no stranger to losing all her gear and equipment (and I don't just mean "Justin Bailey"). I mean, it seems like everytime she lands on a planet some disaster strucks that makes her lose all her functions of her suit (thankfully the chozo left pieces of technology everywhere in the universe just in case any of them ended up stuck in such a planet).

This is probably gonna be the ultimate test for her:
- Vampire Aliens? Easy to slaughter and turn one of them into her baby
- Dragons? Fights one on a regular basis without trouble (Team Ninja can go... nah, that never happened, period)
- Navigating mazes and tight places? Goddamn Houdini couldn't twist his body the way she can.
- A dress/gown, some long gloves and high heels? Seems we have met a worthy foe for Miss Samus.

Fun fact: The German ad for Super Metroid advertised with this text (not what the narrator is saying but the beginning and finale):

"A woman searches her way through an unforgiving world"
"A world full of horrible/deformed metroid mutants"
"that only have one goal"
"to suck her life out"
[action action action]
"This is no world for a lady"

To some degree, you could change a few words and you'd have the concept of this comic:
"A woman searches her way through an unforgiving world"
"A world full of cynical turtles and monsters"
"that only have one goal"
"to cage her spirit"
[bondage, kidnapping, ransom]
"This is no world for a [action] lady(?)"

Poor turtle, doesn't he know that one of Peach's moves is pulling stuff from the ground no matter how thin the platform she's on is??? And Samus could be hiding anything under those skirts.

I love her eyes in panels 2 and 3. <3

love the closeup of her face in the first panel, and her expression in the last, too funny

really hope that koopa troopa don't get into trouble I like him lol
BrokenLogic159 Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012
Oh, style change. I think it works well with the more comedic tone of this page. It gives a wonderful sense of innocence to Samus's comment in the last panel. I'm not familiar with the work it was inspired from so I'd like to see it used in more scenario's before passing judgement on it versus the old style. I think it works well for comedy but would it work well in dramatic scenes too?

Regarding my critique, You're Welcome! I think I'd like to try my hand at writing a few more down the line so I'm happy to know that the first one went over well.

I'm right there with you on inking the lineart. Coloring became way easier after I started using the selection and fill tools. Also, the way you changed her eyes in the last two panels is interesting. Was it just to make her expression stand out a little more?

Hmm... By the same logic, shouldn't Mario respawn with powerups still active if he died while he had a mushroom or something?
HeartGear Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Naw, she found another screw in the cage. That's what I think, anyway. The other one is in the lava.

I actually had an idea of the cage falling apart because it's lost so many pieces.
burkeonthesly Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012
Which sounds like it could lead to a situation like the bug in Portal, where you can sometimes trigger an autosave where you're falling into toxic waste, trapping you in a die/reload/die loop.
KnightWolfPro Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2012
If i may, if you like the look of pencils but want the ease of ink, if no one else has suggested it, what about scan in your pencils first, then ink it, rescan it, color the inked on on a separate layer, then import the pencils over it? I don't know what program you're using to color it, but it's just a thought.
Love the story thus far.
HeartGear Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Thanks for the idea. Mostly I'm considering TIME as the core goal: how to do this as quickly and efficiently as possible w/o diminishing quality, or even improving it if possible.

I'll keep this in mind.

^_^; It's not too fanservicey, is it?
kalistina Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012  Student Digital Artist
I honestly don't think it is. You're doing a great job of balancing (what I think is) author appeal, fanservice and plot. Nothing negative here from my PoV :)

Plus, metafiction kinda makes this all much more enjoyable for me (... you could say metafiction is a form of fanservice for me, I guess... *flaiiils*).

iorel-renders Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2012
Bondage aside, I am genuinely intrigued by this story at this point. I just find fascinating this struggle between the "princess" and the system. Though if she fails a couple of times more, she's gonna end up mummified in rope or something close =p.
HeartGear Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
I keep having this dialogue with myself about the legitimacy of my art. I'm really interested in the bondage aspect, but only as it facilitates the Damsel in Distress scenario, and all the dynamics and psychology that goes into that.
jimmyinwhite Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Samus rocks. koppa dose not stand a chance.
Aurabolt Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2012
That is a very good question; where did she find that sharp object? The cage is surrounded by lava, and has no method of reaching two above or below to reach a sharp part of, say, the decor.
HeartGear Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Buried in the moss.
Aurabolt Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2012
Ah. Well, if that's the case, then the Damsel archetype rules allow her a chance to escape from her situation, even if she manages to lose a life and get restrained more securely? Since I can't imagine the game would not have either moved the Convienent Sharp Thing, but still kept it in her reach. She just has to be able to find it, then. Sounds like the universe thinks of everything.
HeartGear Featured By Owner Jul 29, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
You.. might be overthinking this ^^;
Aurabolt Featured By Owner Jul 30, 2012
You're probably right. I'm just trying to read the context with the gender roles.

More simplistically, Samus is not used to this situation and therefore has no context (save the manga, in some limited cases), while her replacement does. The dress appears to be another hindrance cited by the third law to make the damsel's self-escape more difficult.

My thinking is, therefore, that more "girly" overtones of fashion..and possibly 'feminine' feelings of compassion and being demure and gentle are seen as less capable to escape and being effective on ones' own, which never sat well with me. I always thought Peach and sweeter girls had their own strength, and could fight back in their own way.
