They are extremely rare, and the magic to make them has been forgotten.When casting primal energy, you have to focus it by drawing the rune in the air, and then release it by saying the corresponding draconic word.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: There are myths and legends of human mages once upon a time, but most humans believe they are just stories.Almost all the natural magic has vanished from the western part of Xadia.Ocean magic is in both the dew on spring flowers and the crushing swell of the tides. The sun a raging inferno and a candle’s flame in the dark, the Earth a tree’s deepest roots and a mountain’s highest peak.Primal magic can be mastered by studding and nurturing their bond to their sources. The most powerful mages are called archmages, an honor that can take a lifetime to earn.The unicorn Leola, unique among her own rare kind, granted humans “the language of the dragons and the runes that shaped spells.” Unknown if this means she granted humans the ability to forge a connection though hard work or if she gave them primal stones.Primal Stones are rare and only accomplished archmages know how to make them.Mage characters only know a small number of spells, but they can also cast minor flourishes of magic related to the primal source, simple spells that any mage knows by heart. these can’t do more than what simple basic equipment might accomplish.To cast the spell, you need access to a primal source, knowledge of the correct runes/spoken draconic words, and a visible line of sight to whatever target or location you want. For Elves, you just have to be near the primal source of the arcanum. If you have a primal stone or expend a charge from a item charged with the primal magic, you don’t even need proximity.Once cast, the spell is immediate. Inexperience, haste, or other distractions can create problems from the spell failing to unexpected consequences. You can’t hide that you cast a spell.MoonCallum’s Spell Book: it is all about the spirit and energy of the moon, including an “out of this world” feeling. It gets weaker or stronger depending on the phase of the moon, with it being strongest during a full moon. It’s arcanum is about “understanding the relationship between appearance and reality.” Words associated with this include illusion, love, charm, private, deep, secrets, manipulation, death, reflection, appearances, and duality.Art Book: The moon archanum is about reflections, phases, and dualities: truth and lies. Life and death reality and illusions. Moon magic is strongest during the full moon and weakest during the new. Most are illusionists, sight and sounds are easier to mess with than taste and touch. In places where the energies are highly concentrated, the veil between life and death can thin, allowing the living and the dead to see each other. Mages can conjure flickers of the past, restless spirits can be put to rest, and the living can bid final farewells to the lost.Those connected to the moon arcanum don’t trust easily, with moonshadow elves placing deep value in oaths and blood promises, knowing that trust and perception are easily manipulated.Through the Moon: The ritual done during the new moon to bring moon pheonix’s back involves placing the feather in the waters of the nexus and letting it float into the middle while the mage and friends hold hands and talk about the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The feather will then turn into a egg that is then cracked open to let the baby phoenix out.During the full moon, the moon nexus can become a portal to a place between life and death that was used to grant people closer. It was used rarely and is extremely dangerous, due to the souls you share a connection with (positive or negative) being drawn to them. There is also the chance you can get lost and trapped. You need the Moonhenge to do it. the spell to open it is “Mors Aperta.” The Moonhenge was repaired by just putting a few pieces back into place and straightening some of the pillars in one night, but it immediately fell apart after Callum cast the spell. When using the portal, you have to go into the Nexus’s Lake, where your body goes into a trance and floats while your spirits go into the other side. The portal closes at sunrise, and if you don’t return to your body you will be trapped there forever. That will also happen if you remove the body before the mind enters it again.-the other side looks similar to the real world, but the moon nexus is in pristine condition. When traveling there, Rayla seems to teleported from place to place based on the world’s whims. If you hold onto a moon phoenix feather when going into it, it will keep you tethered and make it easier for you to return. You can do sky magic there.Bloodmoon Huntress: The harvest moon is the full moon that happens once a year, where moon magic is at its peak. Elves like Ethrin prep to enchant every item they can during this time so they will be as effective as possible. It is also called the blood moon. The moonshadow forest is always more powerful during this night. The Silvergrove’s magic keeps them safe normally, but on this night the line between reality and illusion blurs and the woods become dangerous even to the moonshadow elves. The only ones who go out are Runnan and his crew, and they go out in their moonshadow forms to keep them safe.-during the night, all the kids are gathered in one place and kept under guard under the guise of a party. It is called the bonbon fires, and the kids are given extra treats, scary stories, and games all night long.-according to stories the kids tell each other, the bloodmoon huntress is a witch that can disappear and reappear miles away, who hunts people down at the peak of the blood moon and sucks your blood and turns you into a mindless squallwing. The stories also say she grinds their bones into biscuits. She turned invisible the night before a full moon and kidnaped a group of skywing elves to drain of their blood during the harvest moon and store them in vales to drink later. After drinking a veil, her veins began to glow. She was going to say “morte ad vitam-“ when she slit someone throat to drain them, but we didn’t hear the whole thing. She was called Kimdael by Runnan, who said he read about her. She was shown teleporting, extending her nails into claws, and firing dagger like projectiles. She was surprised to have been injured by Etrin’s enchanted arrow, meaning that only incredibly strong magic can harm her. After being injured she disappeared, and Runnan said that a year without her source will leave her weak and that she wouldn’t show her face again until she gathers her strength again. Her alter was smashed by Rayla to slow her down even more.Ethrin is prepping to make a special arrow with gems in it so it can pierce magical armor, it was enchanted with the words “Lumen Terebramus Acuto.” He made two mechanical mice he called wingalings that he enchanted by saying “Liga Et Annecto”, when one is activated both will start glowing.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: Moon: to know the ever-shifting power of the Moon is to be in touch with elements of illusion, mischief, duality, serenity, and subterfuge.This arcanum is most powerful when the moon is full and weakest when it is new. Those that draw upon its power are changeable by nature. Its power lies in the line between shadow and light, truth and reality, beginning and end. Moon magic is possible during the day time.Symbol: it can be found at places consecrated to the moon and on talismans empowered by moon magic.Arcanum: Creatures connected to it include Moonshadow elves, eyeless snakes, and moon phoenixes. Users have an aptitude for stealth, trickery, and concealment. Their affinity deals with the nature of perception, the fact that you can only truly know the appearance itself of someone or thing.Primal Stone: A primal stone of the moon has a moonbeam trapped within it, a silvery light that dances with shadows. Those using it can weave powerful illusions, reveal the truth of the past, and call across the barrier between life and death to calm the restless dead.Spells-Creatura Ficta (false life): the mage animates a temporary creature that is an illusion, but appears to be lifelike and have a mind of its own, based on a nearby physical object.-Curso Perpendiculum (wall run): the mage or the mage’s friend can easily run on a wall at a 90o angle for a short distance.-Fit Invisibilia (fade from sight): the mage uses bright moonlight to shimmer, then become temporarily invisible.-Historia Viventem (animated past): this spell conjures visual representations of occurrences in the past.-Lumen Saltans (dazzling lights): moonbeam lights shimmer, pop, and dance forth from the mage’s hand.-Manifestum Corpus (manifest form): a being that is not entirely corporeal temporarily becomes completely solid and tangible.-Manifestum Incorpus (blue form): an object is made incorporeal for a brief amount of time However, the spell does not work well on people.-Mors Aperta (create portal): casting the spell opens a mysterious and dangerous window between life and death.-Mystica Arbora (group invisibility): this allows the mage to disguise themselves, another person, or a object as a tree.-Partum Mysterium (wave illusion): harnessing moonlight, multiple people, places, and things began to appear that aren’t really there, creating a complex visual distraction.-Vis Mandacis (liar’s face): for a limited time, the mage can appear to maintain an extremely convincing expression of their choosing on their face, regardless of their actual mood or motive.-Vis Verus (true face): the mage selects a person whose face expresses their true emotions and intentions, regardless of what they may be trying to portray, for a limited time.Mire the Mind (moon magic Distinction): you can double the stress a opposing character takes when dealing with your magic.SkyCallum’s Spell Book: it is more than just whether magic. It draws on the vastness of the sky and the energy and movement of the winds. It is strongest during a storm. Words associated with it are lightness, quickness, agility, cleverness, vision, potential, freedom, and perspective.Sky magic draws energy from the moment of the vast sky above us. Their mages thrive on the ever-changing energy their primal source offers them.Sky mages can do more than just create and control the weather. A talented mage can enhance their speed and jump distance. They can also learn to perform feats of incredible ability, letting them be excellent acrobats, dancers, and thieves.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: Sky: Magic of the Sky encompasses the invisible breezes and winds, storms and electricity, and the freedom of the sky’s vast expanse.This primal is linked to speed, freedom, and clarity of vision. It is strongest up in the air, within the clouds or at the top of a mountain. It embodies the dynamism of free movement, unburdened by the chains of the earth. The primal confers not only rapid movement and grace, but quickness of thought, ability to fly, and skill in escaping containment.Primal Stone: a glass-like sphere that has an entire storm or natural weather phenomena trapped within it. they are considered the most dangerous to wield because breaking one will unleash the storm within.Spells-Arcanum Antiquis (ancient secret): the mage can leave a whispered secret hidden in the air that only another Sky mage can hear.-Arcanum Recolligo (gather secret): the mage feels out the nearby air to see if another sky mage has left a whispered secret there.-Aspiro (forceful gust): summons a gust of wind, its direction determined by the mage.-Aspiro Frigis (freezing gust): a powerful gust becomes transformed into a blast of ice that can trap or encase the targeted creature or object.-Fremitus Resonans (booming roar): a powerful and intimidating howl rockets forth from the mage.-Fulminis (lightning): creates a charge of electricity that can then be discharged as a lightning bolt.-Manus. Pluma. Volantus. It can be life-giving or oppressive and destructive. Lots of their spells involve fire, but a lot of sun mages believe that their mission is to bring more light and hope into the world. It is strongest when the sun is highest. Words associated with it are energy, fury, intensity, optimism, teaching, warmth, charisma, revealing, truth, honesty, leadership, and guiding light.Art Book: Sun mages can learn to master light and fire, and some of the most powerful can use their strength of will to heal and purify, banishing sickness and decay. It is among the most dangerous magics to master due to its duality of light and fire, of purification and destruction. The mages must keep control of their emotions and impulses. Tales of Xadia TTRPG: Sun: The Sun has a dual nature: it’s primal magic is both destructive and life-giving. It evokes fire in all its forms, and harnesses the power of light, warmth, and healing.Mages can bend flames to their will, heal, figurately light up the truth, literally illuminate the area, and purge dark magic corruption. It is most powerful at midday when the sun is at its highest point. Any light, even a single candle flame in the dead of night is enough to call upon the arcanum.Symbol: it is found on magical artifacts or locations dedicated to the sun.Arcanum: creatures with the arcanum include Sunfire elves, glow toads, and emberback spiders. This arcanum brings with it a furious, positive energy. It can consume everything it touches, or it can imbue a creature with dazzling light, a constant warmth, or a scalding touch. It often manifests in accordance with strong emotions.Primal Stone: their primal stones have a great fire within it, like a raging firestorm, a tongue of the Sun’s flame, or a blinding light. They can be used to start fires, summon revelatory glows, and banish cold and darkness. Some say the first ones held the fiery breath of Sol Regum himself.Spells-Calor Obscurans (blinding heat): white light gleans from the mage that pulsates with intense heat and blinding light.-Circulus Luminis (ring of light): a ring of bright light is magically summoned to illuminate a person or darkened area.-Digitul Illustris (finger candle): a dim, harmless light emits from the mage’s finger, enough to illuminate a darkened room.-Flammae Circumeans (floating motes): the mage summons floating motes of flame that either orbit them for protection or slowly move towards an attacker as a means of creating protective distance.-Ignis Iacto (bolt of fire): a swirling orb of flame rockets towards a target of the mage’s choice.-Ignis Volitans (flame motes): the mage summons a floating flame orb that can be guided more slowly than a bolt and therefore used more defensively.-Lingua Fraxinus (language of ash): the mage chooses someone whose words will suddenly spill forth as mouthfuls of ash that crumble out of their mouths and onto the ground.-Pila Ardens (burning ball): an orb of flames bounces towards a target, then bops it up to 3 times before dissipating.-Pumex Irae (rock of anger): anger is drawn from a target, making them calm, and summoning a hot steaming lova rock into the hand of the mage.-Superficies Calidus (hot surface): An object gains a painfully hot surface for just a moment.-Verum Animo (sense truth of heart): creates a magic sensitivity to whether a person’s body is showing telltale signs of dishonesty though an increase in body temperature.-Vires Ardens (enhanced strength): a fiery strength fills the individual of the mage’s choice.Guiding Flare (sun Distinction): when you take angry stress, you can grant another character a bonus.EarthCallum’s Spell Book: Rayla hasn’t talked about it much. It draws on the power of the land itself and has 2 types: rock/mineral related and plant/animal related. It is strongest when you are deep underground. Words associated with it are strength, endurance, stubbornness, deep history, patience, healing, growth, and balance.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: Earth: Mages who wield the magic of the Earth hear the whispers of the land itself and can coax forth the might of stone or secrets held in a single seed.From the deepest tunnels to the highest peaks, towering trees to miniscule mushrooms, Earth magic is in all of it. it embodies the strength of stone and the energy of new life. it is at its strongest underground or in the heart of a forest. It can take the form of druidic influence over plants and animals, or shifting the earth. It draws strength and fortitude from the land and is weaker out at sea, but even the smallest pebble or tiniest sprout hold the link.Symbol: it can be found engraved in the sides of underground passages or in the notch of an ancient tree. It is also found on items, artifacts, and locations that draw on Earth.Arcanum: Creatues connected include Earthblood elves, stone giants, and amblers, as well as many underground dwellers. It is centered around resilience, fortitude, patience, and harmony with nature.Primal Stone: literally a stone, often a multifaceted chunk of crystal or a smooth orb of petrified wood with the boundless potential of a mighty forest or a powering peak sealed within and reflected over and over as dendritic patterns, hairline fractures, and mica crystals. It lets you control and change the world around you though moving rocks and growing plants.Spells-Calculo lacto (pebble flick): a small bit of rock flies up and hurls itself away, or against a nearby surface, with only the slightest visible gesture.-Creatura Lenta (slowed creature): nearby dirt, dust, or muck grasps at a creature’s feet and slows their movement.-Crystallum Mordo (crystal Rations): creates small edible crystals that can be chomped on for restorative purposes.-Glarea Creo (create gravel): a stone surface crumbles into gravel-Globus Pulvis (dust cloud): a cloud of dust swirls up and covers the mage, a friend, a thing, a creature, or a small area.-Mediton Ad Crystallo (meditation crystal): creates a crystal that the mage – or a friend – can meditate on to increase their focus.-Rumpus Magnus (loud crackle): the mage causes a loud wooden crack to sound somewhere nearby.-Silva Lamentans (wailing forest): nearby living trees are asked to breath, creating deep spooky, haunting moans.-Spinare Crystallae (crystal spines): a person or creature briefly grows short crystal spines on a spot of their body that the mage chooses.-Terram Agito (churning soil): A deep patch of soil churns like water for a limited time, causing heavy objects to sink.-Vestigium Tacitum (silent footfalls): the mage asks earth magic to lift someone up imperceptibly so that their footfalls never make audible contact.-Vitrum Elicio (conjure glass): a thin shard or wall of clear glass rises up from nearby sand, or clear crystal from rock.Body of Earth (earth magic Distinction): When you take stress, this can be activated to decrease the stress and grant you a asset equal to the new stress rating.OceanCallum’s Spell Book: the kind Callum knows the least about. All kinds of water magic are related to the ocean. It draws on the depth and power of the oceans and tides, and includes ice magic. It is strongest at high tide. Words associated with it include flexibility, transformation, flow, surface level vs depth, navigation, and awareness. Tales of Xadia TTRPPG: The magic of the Ocean streams together the energy of currents, floods, and waves, from the vicious cold of ice to the ebb and flow of the tides.It is in every body of water, from deep oceans to shallow streams. Water is transformative by nature, condensing from steam and freezing into ice. Its magic is dynamic, forceful, and reaching everywhere and anywhere, within and without. It is strongest on, in, or under water; but is also strong in the rain, giving it a powerful synergy with Sky. It evokes the constant churn of the ocean, with a constant flow of energy in its magic. It can strike quickly and devastatingly, and also includes ice magic. It is rumored that the barest drop of moisture can carry the power if needed.Symbol: it can be seen carved into the side of ancient lighthouses that dot Xadia’s coastline. Sailors have claimed to see them carved into rocky shores, indicating hidden coves nearby.Arcanum: creatures connected to it include Tidebound elves, river monsters, sea leviathans, and bog hyenas. Connecting with the arcanum requires finding calm amongst constant change, understanding the innate qualities of water – transformation, fluidity, and adaptability.Primal Stone: the stones contain a mighty whirlpool or the pressure of the ocean floor trapped within it. This fuels magic to command the tides, redirect rivers, flood a room with water, speaking with fish, and granting the ability to breath underwater.Spells-Aqua Delcis (refreshing water): the mage summons a handful of clean, fresh water.-Aqua Protegens (pillar of protection): for a moment, the mage is encased in a pillar of swirling water to deflect a blow or protect from another danger, the pillar then disappearing.-Bracchia Alga (kelp tentacles): tendrils made of kelp burst forth from the hands of the mage.-Cauda Pistris (shark’s tail): the mage’s lower half takes on the shape of a shark’s tail, enabling them to speed though water.-Corpus Liquidus (liquid body): the mage can briefly give their body water-like permeability, allowing projectiles or harmful objects to pass completely though them without harm.-Faucem Sicco (painful drought): the mage harshly dries out the voice, throat, and skin of someone, causing deeply uncomfortable raspy dryness as well as stress.-Lutum Facio (instant mud): trace amounts of ocean magic take its place in the soil or sand, creating a pool of mud where there was once little or no moister.-Pressio Profundorum (pressure of the deep): the mage harnesses magic in the surrounding water or residual water magic in the air to squeeze a fragile object until it breaks or hold a moving object in place for a limited time.-Umidae Audior (amplify sound): a sound that would normally not carry far rides the moisture in the air, reaching the ears of the mage.-Umida Palma Ferio (wet slap): moisture in the air suddenly forms a small flat surface of water that slaps someone or something that the mage chooses, the water then dissipating instantly.-Undae Prosterno (knock flat): a tiny wave of water measuring up to a foot high rush beneath the feet of someone the mage chooses, attempting to knock them down.-Ungulae Corallae (claws of coral): the mage briefly grows claws made of sharp coral on their fingertips, which can be used as protection or to dig into tough surfaces.StarCallum’s Spell Book: Rayla said it might be the most powerful magic there is. It’s very mysterious, and not much is known about it. it is also called “celestial magic”, and draws on the vast and timeless power of the cosmos. Only one Star mage may be born in generations. The only bit of star magic seen by Callum is the key of Aaravos. Words associated with it include Vision, truth, intelligence, otherworldly, destiny, wishes, mysterious, timeless, and reality altering. Unknown when it is strongest.Puzzle House: the map to the unicorn that was enchanted so only the pure of heart can read it is probably Star magic, given that Unicorns are Star magic.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: Most mysterious is the magic of the Stars. So rarely is it seen in action, so distant is its source, that it is rare to even speak of Star magic.The most powerful and rare of the primal, it is the subject of intense debate among scholars. It has been centuries since the last living Startouched elf roamed Xadia, so most of what we know is based on legends. Ancient texts hint at the power to manipulate time and space. The stars are far away, but they are ever present, reminding others of just how small they are in the face of the cosmos.Symbol: it is rare in modern Xadia, but found in random ancient ruins across Xadia, perhaps hinting at some connection long forgotten.Arcanum: creatures connected to it are scares everywhere. The last Startouched elves and unicorns were seen centuries ago. Today, it is in the starweaver spiders and cuddlemonkeys. Legends suggest that those with a Star arcanum resonate with the beat of the cosmic heart within the stars, a celestial quality that crosses time and space.Primal Stone: none have been recorded, but scholars theorize such a powerful artifact might allow the bearer to bend and warp time and space around them.Dark MagicCallum’s Spell Book: There are dark magic spells you can do to permanently enchant your fingers and hands to do things like be a flashlight or lighter.Sarai said that dark magic will change the user, corrupting them and making them evil.-Lighting a fire: crush an emberback spider and chant backwards ‘leaping skipping flames’ to make a fire that will jump between desired targets.-silence spell: use the mummified paw of a Xadian singing-weasel (altos work best, but soprano or tenor weasels will work in a pinch) while chanting backwards ‘steal the voice.’ the target will be rendered mute.-tracking spell: you need a piece of biological mater from the person you are tracking, a jar of whisps, and to go to the top of the highest mountain in the land. Light the hair on fire and chant backwards “fuse your essence” to create a purple flame. Infuse the wisps with the purple flame, then chant “seek (targets name)” and launch the wisps at the target.-Smoke wolves: sprinkle the ashes of Xadian wolves on a shadowlife candle (made from the blood of a moon phenix mixed with earwax from a dragon). Then chant backwards “ashes of fallen, rise again smoky seekers” before sending them to do your bidding. This can be done with the ashes from any creature, not just wolves.-snake chains: chanting “Sliverthing steel, bind them” will turn Claudia’s bracelets into snakes, and then into chains. Claudia doesn’t know exactly how her snake bracelets were made, but they are enchanted with dark magic.Art Book: The ingredients for dark magic are thematically linked to the intent of the spell, such as a cat’s paw for silence and a griffon’s eye for accuracy. When the spell is cast, there is possibly a piece of the mage taken with it.There is a unused dark magic spell for Claudia that would have her form tendrils to pull down dragons from the sky.The spell Viren used to drain Zym was designed to mirror the spell used by Ziard’s bird draining spell.Puzzle House: The plushify spell: sprinkle the target with fuzz-fur scorpion tail powder and say “Solid and unyielding thing become soft” backwards to make the hard object soft.Snap magic is the kind of magic where you snap your fingers to light a candle. Kpp’ar said it drew on “the spark of fun” instead of primal sources and dark magic.Snake bracelets: saying “A clever mind can unlock the whole world” will make the bracelets come to life and unlock specially designed collars with this in mind.Tales of Xadia TTRPG: No one can agree on why humans reached out for dark magic, weather it was out of greed, desperation, or curiosity. Years of use can leave mages with pale complexions, bruise-like blemishes across the body, and blackened eyes.You don’t always have to kill the creature to get dark magic components.To cast a dark magic spell, you need all or part of a magical creature with the correct arcanum, knowledge of the incantation, and a clear line of sight to the person or place you are targeting. The spell then happens immediately, consuming the ingredient, and you can’t hide that you cast it. inexperience, haste, or other distractions can all create problems.Dark magic amplifies the values and emotions of the mage who uses it, and the ease of use combined with consuming magical creatures gives its mages “questionable” moral views. Casting it enough will cause it to twist, corrupt, and change the mage, requiring them to use more magic to hide it.Dark magic leaves traces behind anyone who uses it, even from a single spell. These can be detected by anyone who knows how to search, such as Sunfire high priests or other dark mages. If you get corrupted enough, you can do simple parlor tricks without ingredients, such as lighting a candle.
