Shh… Mama Earth doesn’t know we’re measuring her tallest green kids! Grab some cardboard, a coin, and a string, and help us estimate the height of a tree—no climbing required. Celebrate Earth Day with a little DIY science and a lot of fun!
✂️ Build Your Clinometer
You’ll need: cardboard, protractor, ruler, pencil, string, tape, small weight (like a coin).
Quick steps:
Trace your protractor onto cardboard
Mark a few angles (0°, 45°, 90° is enough!)
Cut it out and poke a hole at the center
Tie string through the hole and attach a coin
✅ When you hold it up, the string should hang straight down

🌳 Measure Your Tree
Stand back and measure your distance from the tree
Measure your eye height (ground → your eyes)
Find your angle
Hold the clinometer at eye level
Look at the top of the tree
Read the angle where the string points
🧮 Quick & Easy Math
Step-by-step:
Subtract your measured angle from 90°
Example: 90 − 35° = 55°
Find the tangent (tan) of that number on a calculator
Example: tan(55°) ≈ 1.43
Multiply by your distance from the tree
Example: 1.43 × 10 m = 14.3 m
Add your eye height
Example: 14.3 + 1.6 = 15.9 m
✅ That’s your tree’s height!
