I curled up on my bed, trying to fall asleep. But I couldn't. The mirror kept popping up in my mind. Chase had immediately called Gill about it, who said he'd swing by the next day for a look. We'd then eaten dinner in silence. Chase had promised to stick around for a few more hours, much to my relief. Even though Chase was here, I still couldn't feel at ease. Someone had sneaked into my house and left a message. Shivering, I closed my eyes and let the night swallow me whole.

"What are you doing, Gill?" I asked as I sat down besides a small boy with fancy clothes. We were outside under the shade of a tree.
"Reading a book," he responded without looking up from what he was doing.
"Then I'll read it with you," I grinned, leaning closer. Gill blushed as our shoulders touched but said nothing. We sat there like that for a few minutes until

I couldn't believe what I'd just heard. Was Chase joking? But with one look at his face I knew he was being serious.
"But why?" I finally said.
"Because of the recent deaths. I don't want to lose you," Chase explained quietly. "You can't stay here. It's not safe for you."
"I'm not leaving!" I cried sharply. I glared at him defiantly. "There's no way I'm going to leave this place after so many years!" Chase's expression looked pained.
"Please, Rika, do this for me," he pleaded. I shook my head.
"No, Chase, I'm staying, and that's final," I told him in a firm voice before talking in a gentler tone. "You and everyone else will protect me, right? I won't have to worry about anything." He looked at me for a second before sighing.
"Fine," Chase consented and I squealed in joy, hugging

Wizard looked sadly at the two of us for just a split second before smiling like everyone else. I could tell it was painted though.
Chase and I jumped up with flushed faces to join the others who were now laughing. And then the picnic started. We were seated in a circle and I sat between Chase and Wizard. Luke kept trying to steal Chase's seat next to me, which was pretty funny. I laughed and smiled a lot during the whole thing. At some point I stopped eating to turn to talk to Chase. I saw him trying to stop Calvin and Luke from making him drink wine and laughed. I left Chase in their hands and instead turned to my right, wanting to talk to Wizard. He noticed me looking at him and smiled.
"So, um, they accepted you coming along on the picnic?" I asked after a moment of silence between us.
"Actually, they were all against it at first but let me join after Gill explained that you had invited me. I guess they trust you a lot, Rika," Wizard explained with a sma

That day led to a strong friendship between the Wizard and I. In the mornings I would drop by his house quickly to say hello and give him some coffee. Then I'd go home to tend to my crops and livestock, all of which I'd gotten from the nearby ranch and farm. In the afternoons and late evenings I would come over to watch the stars with him or quietly read a book from his study. Although the Wizard didn't talk much, he was still good company.
I came by one morning not to give him coffee, but a Fugue Mushroom, which I learned that he loved. I had avoided Chase for a few days now, making sure to never go too close to the Brass Bar or his house. The Wizard accepted my gift with a pleased expression. As we sat together in his living room and drank tea, Wizard decided to start a conversation for once.
"Rika, Chase is really a good person at heart," Wizard said as he set his cup of tea down. I stiffened a

I finished my food and stared down at my fork. What would happen now? Did this mean that I was going to get killed too? Chase must have seen my worried face because he hastily said, "Don't worry about it. If you want, I can hang around with you until you go home. You're the girl who bought that ranch, right?"
"Yeah, I did buy it. Thanks, Chase," I smiled warmly at him. He seemed embarrassed as he looked away and ran a hand through his hair.
"Well, if you're done eating now we can go," Chase mumbled. I finished the stir fry and got up, nodding. After I paid for the food and Chase hung up his apron we left the bar and went through town. All the while we talked and got to know each other a bit more. He helped me get supplies and introduced me to most of the locals. There was Luke, a boy who wore a bandanna over his blue hair, Dr. Jin, a green haired man with glasses who

I was riding in the back of a cart that belonged to a man named Cain. My destination was the ranch I had bought here in Castanet. He glanced over his shoulder to check how I was doing.
"Sorry if it's a bit rough back there," he apologized as the cart rattled around.
"No, no, I'm fine. Thank you for letting me ride along, sir," I said with a shake of my head.
"No problem," Cain smiled. "Also, we should reach your new ranch sometime soon."
I was happy to hear that. As I shifted my position, Cain started talking again.
"You should be careful once you get there, miss," Cain warned with worry in his voice.
"Why?" I asked with a frown.
"Well, there have been some killings lately. People have been found dead all over the place," Cain explained.
