Emma had never imagined a place could feel so foreign.
Saba was alive with sound. Merchants called to passing customers as they opened their shops for the day. Dogs barked somewhere beyond the harbor while gulls wheeled overhead, crying out as fishing boats returned with the morning's catch. Beneath it all came the steady rumble of engines and the rhythmic pounding of machinery she still couldn't identify.
None of it felt familiar.
It wasn't even the technology. It turned out it was the people. Everywhere she looked she saw humans.
Humans unloading cargo at the docks. Humans repairing engines. Humans haggling in the marketplace. Human children darting through crowded streets while their grandparents watched from shaded porches. Human merchants, craftsmen, fishermen and laborers. Everywhere she turned, another human face greeted her.
