I find this difficult to evaluate in isolation from the original artwork which I can't help referring to. This rework has certainly achieved it's aim in becoming darker and captures the atmosphere of a gloomy prison cell very well. There also seems to be a sense of impending doom there which I find unsettling and maybe that's the point. There is almost a halo of darkness around the edges of the image which is echoed by the shadows of and on the figures.
However, for me, I think the heavier and darker style of this rework have inevitably eliminated the qualities of the elegance and detail of the original. Qualities that I usually associate with this artist's work. For example the area top right showing the hands of the Officer tying the strap across Reeves' back has been lost. I also find that the femininity, elegance and sharpness of the lady officers which, for me, is an integral quality of the original has been blunted. I'm thinking as I write this and refer back and forth to both artworks, that perhaps something midway between them may work better for a pulp fiction style.
