Hey, fellow artists: 2 questions:
1. Can anyone recommend an affordable display tablet, like a Cintiq?
2. Any recommendations for good free beginner animation software?
Thanks for any help!
Just a friendly reminder that I have a Patreon, if you'd like to support my art. You can get involved for as little as $1 a month, and see the strips before anyone else. $3 also gives you access to my pencils and inks, $5 a monthly sketch card, and $20 gets you a 7" X 9" pencil and ink mini-sketch.

Harold C. Jennett III
Artist | Professional | Digital Art
United States
HAROLD C. JENNETT III is known for many things. His love affair with batter-fried pickles, his rescue of seventeen gilded acorns from almost certain death, and the way he wears his boots when he goes swimming. But what most don’t know is that this kid can draw.

His mother will tell you that Harold’s first drawing was not that of a childish stick figure, but of an actual, solid person, and many believe this to be true. A devoted husband, a loving father, Harold also does work for charity. Most of his commission work goes towards charity and Harold is currently creating the Creative Compassion: Shelter anthology to raise money for the homeless.

Harold started his first comic works in 2006 when he created MIMES with Wayne Cordova. Harold moved into the world of web comics with the Geek Syndicate Web Comic. But in his most intelligent move to date, Harold has currently begun work on the Variety Smack webcomic, and an upcoming as-yet-to-be-announced graphic novel with Steeven Orr where the sensational writing will only be eclipsed by Harold’s amazing art.

All in all Harold C. Jennett III is a pretty swell guy whose artistic chops need to be run up the flagpole and saluted. You can follow Harold on Facebook, so go do that.

No problem. I hope I have as many strips under my belt as you someday.

Having a lot of strips is essentially nothing to be proud of.  All it takes is a delusion that one needs to keep going, despite all indications that one rightly shouldn't.  It's more pathological than anything else.

Well, it's still impressive :) I'd probably have a larger audience if I hadn't taken such a long break a year ago.

Hey, Harold, good to see you again. :highfive:

Seems like it must have been a rough year or so for you. No OAC since the middle of '15, no new art here on DA since this time last year. What have you been up to?

p.s. In case you haven't already seen it, there's a site called Fair Page Rates that's trying to keep tabs on page-rates in the comics industry to help us understand the market, price ourselves and obviously earn a living wage. fairpagerates.com/ The rates you listed on your Wordpress look pretty competitive compared to their current benchmarks.

I've been working on a mini comic on patreon. I kinda regret the decision, as I'm just not into the story anymore, but I'm getting funded, so I have to finish it.

I regret not sticking with OAC, as it was really going well, and I enjoyed it. I had a decent following, but as I usually do, I second guessed myself and moved on.

I would like to go back to it, and hopefully I can find a readership again, if they haven't been too burnt.

I need to stop worrying about hot to best build an audience and just focus on drawing. I just need to get better disciplined with doing the work.

Thanks for the link! That looks awesome!

 I think I lost a bit of interest for my first two vignettes in Woohooligan - the Secret Lives of Klingons and Nerdgasm. But for me, I had never planned for those to be more than about 10 pages, so by the time I was losing interest they were almost over anyway.

I get second guessing yourself too... I tend to do that a lot with my marketing more so than with my comics... but I do sometimes think "I should have done this page differently / taken the story in a different direction". Sometimes I'll start a page and half-way through illustrating it my brain says "what are you doing? This isn't funny, it's sad!" ;P

I wouldn't worry too much about reclaiming the OAC audience if you revive it. Woohooligan was dead for about a year right after I was in the hospital with diabetes and then had to move across country. I had to take on a bunch of software engineering work so we could make repairs on the house we bought. And it was about a year before I was able to get back to cartooning. So basically all of 2014 was shot, but then when I came back I had by far the largest traffic spike on the site shortly after I picked it back up.

And then later I discovered that a continuing decline in my traffic (for over a year) shortly after that coincided with a HUGE spike in ad-blocking software that I wasn't aware of, so apparently I was actually doing really well with my advertising, and just didn't know that I was swimming into a tidal wave. ;P

And don't beat yourself up too much about focusing on audience-building. Yeah, building discipline for the work probably isn't a bad thing (I'm also there), but you need both if your goal is to make comics a serious part of your income. ... well, or you need to get good at getting freelance gigs in this industry, which is a whole other can o' worms that I'm not particularly enthused about. ;P

If you do get back to OAC, I've started writing reviews for webcomics over 100 pages.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. :highfive:

Cool, thanks very much for the encouragement.

I'll start posting my short story here once it's finished.

It's called "The Mighty Piñata" :)
