Free to use doesn't mean free to re-upload

I can't believe it still needs to be said, but just because an icon is FREE TO USE doesn't mean you are free to do with it as you please.
It means you are free to use it as your icon,  WITH PROPER CREDIT PROVIDED.

You are NOT allowed to:

- Re-upload the art. It is still mine, I hold the copyright.

- Use my pixels as a free-to-use cross-stitch chart. Again: I'm providing these free icons to be used as free icons ONLY.

- Claim you made the icon, or re-upload it on other sites.

- Alter the icons and then sell them as a commission.
Doing any of the above makes you, for lack of a better word, a disrespectful asshat.
It is NOT your art to just spread around and use as you see fit. YOU did not make it.

Hell, I don't even have to provide free to use avatars to people on here.
Given all the grief that comes with people thinking anything is theirs to take and claim, I'm not even sure if I want to continue making them.

woa, this got to be soooo f*** annoying, I know a deviant that resubmited eeevery single comission, art trade or requests, and he become popular since people think he is the artist, (even i though he was pretty good)

It is pretty annoying, but they luckily took it down without too much trouble.
I just hate that people see "FREE" and don't even bother to read the rules of usage. :faint:

they? woa so it was a more than one, but ya, got your feeling there
Hardrockangel's avatar
Oh, no it was just one person. I just tend to use the impersonal "they" often when I'm not sure if they're male / female.

:asshat: <---  I think this is what an asshat looks like.

I've had people upload my icons as their own, which is really pretty lame when you think about it.  My icons suck and I just do them as a hobby.  I mean, they look terrible.  I told one chick if she was going to be a twat and steal art, at least steal something good.  lol

I honestly don't get where this "It's on the internet, so I get to use it how I want"-attitude comes from.
Then again, it seems the most trouble comes from kids who shouldn't even be on deviantART yet. And even then you'd expect parents to teach to their children that stealing is wrong.

There are way too many immature kids on this site, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they should know stealing is wrong.  I was taught that as soon as I was able to comprehend things.  Unfortunately, their parents probably have the same attitude and pass it along to their children instead of teaching them right from wrong.

It mostly annoying because if you find one, you just know their friends are going to be under-aged too so in the end you have to spend time filing 5-6 reports. :faint:
And they just don't seem to get it these days. Apparently the age-old "But other people do it too!"-whining is still being used as a defence.

I'm actually really happy my parents didn't let me join websites when I was that age.
I'd hate to think of how much of a brat I could've possibly been.

haha!  When I was that age, we didn't have the internet.  I can't imagine growing up with the internet.  It would have ruined my childhood.  Kids should be playing outside, not sitting behind a screen all day.

Ugh... This really is annoying. "It was free so I took it" attitude really makes me think that the word "free" is nowadays not clear enough. Anyway, you have my support, perhaps an additional report will help ;)

I have filed a DMCA and am sure deviantART will handle it. I don't want to clog up the helpdesk. ^^;
It is really annoying, though. Especially since I only found out due to them commenting on another work with a less than appropriate comment.

Let's just hope there aren't more of them, just remaining silent..

I hate how when people see "FREE" they think it means they don't have to credit. People often don't even THINK about crediting until I personally get on their case about it! I even changed my gallery folder's name from "Free Icons" to "Usable Icons" and the titles from "FREE [whatever] Icon" to "Icon: [whatever]" in hopes that people will get the point — not to mention BIG letters of "YOU MUST CREDIT IN YOUR SIGNATURE" in the description of each icon. -_-
Hardrockangel's avatar
The credit-part seems to be the thing that people just don't get indeed.
"I don't know how it's done so I'll just take the icon, BYE!"

Like .. what the hell. Rude much? D:

I think this applies to all kinds of art, I wish people would finally understand it.

I can't even imagine how frustrating it must be when works that can be printed are stolen and re-uploaded.
With pixels, there's luckily not much room for profiting off of them on a larger scale (I think).

It's just that people seem to see the word "FREE" on resources and immediately assume they can do whatever they please.
Rules are there for a reason and they should be adhered to.

The problem is, it's ridiculously easy to get away with doing such things on the internet, luckily at least within DA those that are rightfully reporter get removed.

I genuinely hope that people who put a lot of work and good will into sharing free resources won't get discouraged by this ugly behavior.

I'm stealing this to put in my artist comments every time I submit something free! :giggle:

Especially the asshat part! :D
Hardrockangel's avatar
Whoops, copy-paste the version with the typo fixed, though!
No but I only found out because the same person commented "eww" on my latest piece.

I'm not sure if they're thinking this is all a sort of joke, or if they're underage.

Who commented eew? on the all seeing all knowing piece? What??? Idiots....
Hardrockangel's avatar
I'm guessing it is someone underage, but then again: it's marked as mature so they shouldn't even be able to see it if they're not 18. :faint:

How many 13-year-olds have we seen trying to fool people though? It's just so pathetic and annoying. But there isn't a way you can prove you are over 18 anywhere online so anyone can be anything and annoying anyone.... :(
