Thebes

And here's another Ancient Greek city-state! It's Thebes! I think.

I DO NOT CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT OTL I'VE JUST BEEN RECENTLY RENEWING MY CHILDHOOD INTEREST IN THE ANCIENT WORLD. And making stupid comics for my Classics 110 class.

Appearance

Hair: Brown, curly. Covers eyes for some reason. BEARD.
Eyes: ??? (Probably very serious and sad looking)
Face: Angular and covered by BEARD
Nose: Large and curved.
Height: Around Sparta's height, I dunno.
Clothing: He usually wears a shorter chiton for better movement since he spends a lot of his time working. Athens likes to make fun of it.
Other: Thebes spends more time outside than Athens, so he has a tanner complexion. His body is pear shaped, but strong.

Personality

North of Attica (where Athens' house is) is Boeotia, who is mainly represented by the city of Thebes. Thebes is one of Athens' major rivals. The rest of Greece already hates him because he was forced to side with Persia in the Persian Wars, but Athens is always looking for any other excuses he can find to ridicule Thebes. Athens thinks of him as a backwards hick with no military or intellectual skills, but really Thebes is a lot smarter than he looks. (He's like the Saskatchewan of Ancient Greece, hahaha...) One of Athens' favourite insults is 'Boeotian Pig!' and is usually followed by a long tangent about how he himself is much more like salt. I'll put this in a comic, promise. XD

Thebes' artwork and craftsmanship isn't taken very seriously. Athens thinks it's rather 'quaint' at best. However, Thebes taught Macedon everything he knows about weapons; there's a reason why Alexander's title is 'The Great'!!

Thebes isn't particularly well liked by the rest of Greece in general because he was quickly captured by Persia who basically used him as a meat shield. D: Of course, later on it was kind of his fault that Macedon took over Greece, too.

Athens also thinks of Thebes as something of a glutton, since Athens works hard to import his grain from other places while Thebes just lazes around eating the food he grew himself. XDD;

You can tell this description is much more about what sort of person Athens is! XD;

Thebes also shares the name with a city in Egypt. A lot of Egyptian cities and people get Greek names. XD;

The mythology behind Thebes is actually very sad and often ends in tragedy worse than death. (Oedipus, anyone?) Look up Sophocles' Theban tragedies, Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes, or Euripedes' The Bacchae.
(Okay, I haven't got around to reading them myself, only excerpts from my mythology textbook. I do have a copy of the Theban Tragedies... somewhere...)

Thebes today has a lot of things to sell, but has trouble attracting tourists because Athens is so popular.
