Some people don't even know that they are pirating.
I don't really have much else to say, just thought that should be mentioned.
...I used to without realizing it. I used to use a site that converted youtube videos into mp3 tracks. I had found that several others have done it and was told it was okay for personal use. So many people do things like that without realizing that it's illegal. I had no other way of downloading music...I was just a kid, I had no way of buying songs off the internet. So...yeah. I guess I'm a pirate. *que booing noices* yeah, lol.

There's nothing wrong with piracy. Mainly because out of the millions of citizens, businesses, etc that buy a product, a very small percent actually fill up the piracy bracket. I won't disagree that It hurts whatever business is getting stolen from, but I want to make it very very VERY clear that it is in no way "stealing" something. It's simply sharing or copying something.
     If someone were to hack into a website and steal a bunch of pay-pal account, I'd be completely against it. But Piracy simply isn't that at all. Piracy is in it's own, a way to share what you've used and enjoyed (or hated) to the world. For example;
Say you go to Walmart one day and buy a bag of chips. After exiting the building, you open up the bag and start munching away. Then your Friend walks up and asks if you'll share few. By saying "Yes" that makes you no better than a pirate. It is no different to share something physically, then to share something virtually.
I'm sick and tired of people saying that it's wrong to pirate, without even knowing the actually way it's done. When someone want's to pirate someone, they don't normally steal the item. Whether it be a movie, CD, Game, ect. They BUY it first, and then scan it and post it to a website. It is almost always purchased first.
If I were to make a product, animate a TV Show, or make my own music; I would be all for the act of piracy on my product. Now, if you have the money, and pirate, i'm not saying it's wrong, but that's (In my opinion) a dick move.
I'd much rather want my Fan-Base to enjoy my product through the act of piracy, more so than wish they couldn't because they couldn't afford it.

And just to let everyone know. The pirating I'm talking about is very different from the Pirating that most of you seem to be discussing. Copying a DVD and then selling it online is not acceptable. But if you were to pirate a DVD only to let others enjoy that movie, then in what way are you hurting anyone? If anything, you're helping the company gain more of a fan-base by letting more people experience that movie.
If you think that's wrong, then I never wanna see you share anything with anyone for the rest of your life. Because that's all that it literally is. Jackasses.

It's unacceptable in all circumstances. If you love the company, then support them by buying their product! If you don't, then they're not making money and may have to go out of business, and then you don't get new stuff from them EVER AGAIN. That's happened with a few of the mangas I used to read. Never play a pirated game because then the sales go down, and even if the company goes on, they're gonna see that that game didn't do well and not make any more like it. Same goes for movies. Illegally downloading music also isn't right because the musician needs to be paid, just like any other job. They had to work hard to make that song, and if no one's gonna buy it, they don't get paid for doing their job.

In some cases, the company wouldn't get payed either way. Some people can't afford to support the company, so obtaining illegal copies of something of theirs for free simply would not effect them. How is that harmful? Because the person didn't buy it? By that logic, anyone who doesn't buy it is harmful.

Okay, yeah I agree with you. While I myself won't get something unless I can legally get it, you make a great case for the people who are not as financially well off as I am. I thought you were saying "illegally download stuff even if you can afford it" when I read your first comment, but now I see that you don't agree with that. Also, thank you for arguing correctly, unlike most trolls on the internet who resort to swearing and using all caps. And correcting your grammatical error (while I'm talking about that, I'll correct mine: *people decide to illegally download it*, not "downloading") was great, it shows that you're not just trying to pick a fight and yell at me. This is how debating should be, both sides benefit by learning the other sides points, even if opinions are not changed (though in this case, mine was). Thank you. :)

"Some people can't afford to support the company, so obtaining illegal copies of something of theirs for free would simply not effect [affect] them". So all the companies that went out of business because too many people were illegally downloading their stuff "weren't affected"? The people who start illegally downloading stuff do hurt the company because then the sales go down. Let's say that some new video game sells 60,000 copies. The company makes another game, but this time, people decide to illegally downloading it. It only sells 30,000 copies. That company’s sales are going down, and it’s hurting them.

These people would be unable to buy their work anyway(the ones I'm talking about) so if pirating didn't exist, the company still would not receive buisness from them. The sales would go down due to those who wish to support them not being able to.
If someone CAN support the company, they should. I do think it's wrong to get the free version of copyrighted material if you have the option to get it legally. But some people can't, so the company wouldn't be receiving buisness from them either way.

And by the way, I apologize for my grammatical error.

I agree.

Piracy hurts companies that their money don't go to them as people steal in a quote/unquote "get rick quick" scheme.

Ha ha yep. =p

But yeah. People will do anything to get quick cash when it comes to scamming companies which is by all means illegal as I've watched an episode on I Almost Got Away With It with this guy camcording newly released movies in theaters and sell copies. That prompted the MPAA to change the warning message in DVD's.

I actually wasn't viewing it from a "make money" standpoint (as in from the person who's pirating the stuff). I was from a "consumer" (if you can call it that) standpoint, and being the one downloading the stuff. Actually pirating and selling the stuff is even worse than what I described. I mean, I've only been on dA for like half a year and I've seen how big Art Theft is to the original creator. I've never heard of the show you mentioned, but why anyone who's sane or sober would upload videos of them doing illegal stuff is beyond me, but I'm glad it prompted a change and gave the authorities a more in-depth look at how people get away with things.

I despise it. I understand being envious of someone's skill or really loving their work, but DO NOT STEAL IT! It is NOT your work and if you are in the art industry just for fame, GET OUT. Art is for expression and fun, not for earning money and recognition (Though that is an upside in some circumstances)
If your own art isn't the best, PRACTICE! You WILL get better. It will just take a while. Stealing other people's artwork is despicable and is not different than stealing in real life. What you do on the internet shows who you really are.

To pirate true art from a wondeful artist is an act of a cold, heart- & soul-less person.
NOT ACCEPTABLE! MUST BE FOUGHT!

"Pirating" mass media (ok, might be art too!) from global playing companies is moraly ok if you don't have the money but also try to do your best in supporting the artists behind it!

I hate it when they make illicit material which hurts the real company when a heartless thief tries to scam the media :(

Especially when the artist(s) has nothing of it!
I can understand ppl trying to consume w/out paying, if those consumers are poor, because the Free TV channels are all useless, unwatchable BS - at least here in Germany!
What I hate more are organized bootleggers, "pirates" & thiefs publishing work of "small" artists who need every penny!

Yeah or kinoto, movie2kto, kinoxto, movie4kto, etc.!
They only stream that's neither illegal nor really legal in Germany at the time.
Popcorn time uses Torrent though and therefore is definitely illegal in most countries around the world!

I understand ppl who use streaming services if they can't afford the release or a show/movie isn't available legally anymore.
But downloading is not cool! Because I don't think most files there are in good quality so downloading for watching on other devices is useless & spreading the files is antisocial.

Therefore I stay away from such sites.

depends on what kind of pirate if its personal or for profitable use such as illegal downloading. If your actually stealing ones work and using it for your own gain then its bad but if its just like music downloads then who cares they don't make sites for said downloads for no reason now do they?

I don't think hacking has anything to do with piracy. Sure you can hack ROMs, but I think you can hack physical copies as well. Besides, people can legally make and hack their own ROMs, just don't distribute it.
