The Getaway
Watercolor
13 x 11.5"
2016

Getaway definition:

an act or instance of getting away: as

a :  an escape, esp. from a dangerous situation

b :  start

c :  a place where one escapes for relaxation, vacation, etc., or a period of time for such recreation.

The ambiguity in my picture is intentional. Escape? Or a new start? It does show a place where one might escape to for a period of time.

Maybe someone has been traveling, or hiding...is the plane coming for them? Or is the pilot the owner of these items? Looks like a gun in a Bible...could be any book, that's where my brain first went though. Hm, lots of questions spring up studying this piece, beautiful work.

Hiding. And waiting, with his gun and book. The gun stands for the 2nd amendment, the book for the 1st. The compass to chart a course along with the map. The binoculars to focus closer to that course. The post with a lit bulb as a signal for the pilot, who one must assume is armed with the values the waiting one must leave behind. There are wires in the barbwire that have been cut. The flag upside down is a signal of distress. So, the answer is that this was a well thought out, secret and rapid escape. This is just about everything I've ever told about this picture. The book is actually my hardback copy of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged". In that book is a scene where one of the characters, on escaping from a tyrannical society to a free one, is last seen tossing a bunch of bluebells in the air. Hence the line of bluebells, with a single bluebell detached seemingly riding on a current of wind below the plane. Note the pole you might think has broken telephone wires. These are actually thick ropes, used presumably by the one who got to the top for the signal bulb.

Thank you very much.
