Dragonfly Falling by HamsterMasterSamster Dragonfly Falling by HamsterMasterSamster
Finished 'The Scarab Path' yesterday, the 5th book in the Shadows of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and felt all nostalgic for books 1-4. When the urge for fanart hits me I tend to indulge, because it doesn't happen all that often D: Especially not for novels.

So, some sketches of my favourite character, Dragonfly-kinden Prince Minor Salme Dien of the Commonweal. Or Salma, as he more commonly goes by. The writer actually leaves quite a lot of character appearance details up for interpretation, which is awesome, because I don't have to feel guilty about drawing exactly what's in my head instead of trying to match author/other fan expectation :D

I don't pretend the bottom scene is particularly accurate to any specific scene in the novel; it was just the result of trying to capture the bit where Salma and Che, a Beetle-kinden, are travelling via the scenic captured slave route. The restraints on Salma there are specifically designed for kinden who possess the Art of flight, which is why his companion doesn't have them. Che was kinda secondary to my intentions in that sketch but she came out pretty close to how I imagine her anyway, so BONUS POINTS. As sturdy, awkward, clumsy, chunky heroines go, she is pretty awesome.

FANGIRL SPLURGE OVER. If you like fantasy novels and you like fantasy politics, warfare, steampunk, magic vs tech clashes and, most of all, the idea of human races based on various insects, Shadow of the Apt is totally worth a look.

Thanks! I always pictured the Art-driven wings as being a suggestive shimmer rather than any solid forms or shapes.

This is fantastc. And pretty much how I imagined him, too. Your work is amazing and I'd love to see more characters in this style, like Tynisa or prehaps Tsiamon.

Thank you! I've been toying with trying my hand at Achaeos lately . . . (The characters I like the most always seem to have the worst things happen to them XD )

I like it when major characters get into horrible, unwinable situations. It's a nice break from the usual deus-ex-Eff-you-all type of protagonist that's so common these days.

Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of harrowing epics. Trauma breeds character! :D

Try STephen Erickson's 'Malazan Book of the Fallen' series. It's a marathon to read, but good fantasy epics. He kills off major characters quite a bit.

This is a fantastic picture - would I be able to use it for the Shadows of the Apt website?

I'm glad you like it! It's always a little weird doing book fanart . . . Readers can get such different pictures in their heads of the characters.

I absolutely love those books, they are brilliant. Get reading book six. It is awesome. I've read all the ones that I'm aware of as available. I get mixed up about what happens in which book. What's happened to Salma thus far?

As much as I would love to say, it would be a massive spoiler fest XD So I'd better not. I have actually managed to convince a couple of people to pick up the books as a result of my fan splurge, so no spoilers will come from my tongue! Feel free to note me or something though if you fancy a chat about the books :D
