Eponia Yale (Centicore) by hammyhammy22 Eponia Yale (Centicore) by hammyhammy22
:iconthelandofeponia:

Living within the Hidalgo mountains themselves the ancient Yale form tribes that work and dwell within the rocks. It is said that the species are related to the Unicorns of old however they became subterranean the reason is not known. It is assumed to be due to their association with earth based "magic" of lay lines.

Part of their earthen magic appears to be immunisation from a Cockratice's petrifying gaze, they will remain rooted to the spot however the stone casing will not form over their bodies. If a Cockratice finds a Yale asleep however and chooses to sting him/her the Yale will go completely blind when it awakes. The eyes of the stung Yale will become a pair of white marble orbs, the Yale will be unable to see any longer.

Instead of possessing conventional magic like their single horned cousins the Yale's magic lies within it's pair of horns, allows it's horns to move, swivel about it'd head. A horn may be positioned and used as a lance while the other rests upon it's back. Damaging a Yale's horn causes that horn to lose its magic and remain in its last position.

Stocky in build, covered in shaggy fur Yale are considerably buffer and bulkier than standard ponies, even female Yale retain this bulk. They posses shaggy thick manes and lion like tails the colour of the mane and tail match just as the colour of the horns, cloven hooves match. Yale usually posses earthy colours such as browns, greys, maroons, shades of auburn, occasionally golds. Beards and tusks are often seen in both genders. The eyes of Yale are squared with a slit pupil, the colour of the eyes often seems to match the gem or mineral that that particular Yale has a talent for finding and working with.

They typically mine gems, minerals to craft into jewelry, trinkets, armour, weapons to take down into the cities, towns to sell, trade. Due to their occupation one would expect conflcit with the also subterranian diamond dogs however the two groups are peaceful, will enlist in eachothers help at times (for a price of course) they will happily do trades with the diamond dogs since the DG can get deep enough to unearth diamonds which fetch the highest price in jewelry, the diamond dogs lack the skill to craft such items.

They will decorate their own manes, bodies, tails, horns and beards with things they have crafted from the gem or mineral they are most associated with akin to a Pony cutie mark. Although they do no have family names the last name of a Yale is the Gem or Mineral they are most associated with i.e. Topaz, Sapphire, Ruby and their job i.e. Cutter, Sniffer, Miner

This is just a basic example of what your Yale could look like ^w^ (with an example of dual tusks, a beard, eye shape).

I kind of turned my favourite mythical creature.... into the pony version of the Dwarfs from LOTR (Unicorns always struck me as being like Elves)

I had to go and have a read about the MLP version of them xD

ummm I don't think they'd be enemies, since the Cockatrice only turns Ponies to stone, doesn't appear to hoard gems or steal things of value. With their strong ties to earthen magic however I think the Yale's may be immune to being petrified-as in the skin becoming stone side of it, they'd still be rooted to the spot just not turn to stone- (Although that has given me an idea for a disease for the Yale actually).

Ah! I only ask cuz the link you provided said the Basilisk was their enemy and when I clicked that it looped around to Cockatrice. It would have been an interesting little twist.

But either way. Adaptable horns is pretty damn awesome. And yay inspiring! :dummy:

oh derp I forgot about that part xD I'm not actually sure if we have Cockatrice in Eponia.... I might still actually add that little tidbit though ^^ (That they are immune to being petrified when awake, but if they're asleep & a Cockatrice bites them it will cause them to go blind, I don't like the sound of their eyes exploding that's just ugh)

I've always thought they were so badass looking ^w^ so as soon as I saw the group I thought "must ask about the adding Canticore!"

xD yeah I don't think that would fit within the pony world somehow. It's a bit harsh.

What if it "petrified" their eyes? Like, turned them white and stone-like? That would be cool/relevant.

OOOH I really like that OwO I'll have to add that ^^

I have a couple of ideas for diseases that they can catch. One of them involves crystals sprouting in their lungs from breathing in gem fragments (it's fatal if left untreated, common in older Yale), Brittle Horn disease (exactly what it says on the tin xD), one that was gems actually start to sprout from their skin they become incredibly avarice, violent.
