About helping others

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 23, 2015, 9:24 AM
It has recently come to my attention that some people just don't know how to respond to requests from others for help. I have always offered help to those I can when asked. I've never ignored a request for help. I do ask that a question is specific in nature. But overall, I answer every question I can to the best of my abilities.

So if you're going to act like you know something, and answer questions from people, you had better be prepared to answer a bunch of questions and have a bit of patience. Many times one question leads to another, and another after that. Or once you help with one question, that person may then turn to you and ask different questions. So be prepared for that. If someone is asking you for advice, they obviously think you have more knowledge that might help them. If you can't take the time for follow up questions, or just don't want to be bothered by questions that you 'think' are too obvious or simple for you to respond to, then you have no business helping someone in the first place.

If you aren't prepared to help every time someone asks, then just answer their note with a simple, "I can't help you." Or ignore it. But don't start helping them, and then get pissed when they ask for more help. And don't act like a child and start name calling and giving derogatory comments about their work. If they want criticism, I'm  sure they'll ask. But resorting to things like calling their work 'mediocre' and an 'abonimation' is childish, pathetic, immature and disgusting.

If you don't want to help someone, then don't, no one is saying you have to. I'm not naming anyone. But I personally am disgusted with a certain member of the community and in my opinion, they are the one that is an embarrassment to us. So to that person I say, I hope in the future you either ignore requests for help, or simply tell them you can't help. Because it's quite obvious, you are not qualified when you spout the trash I heard about.

Omg... I keep trying to have faith in humanity... But some times it's hard ...
Hope ppl realize how a simple word can really hurt others. Please think twice before saying this kind of things... Karma is a reality, don't do to others, what you don't want others to do to you... I'm Hopefully would like to see everyone in the same path... Be friends... Don't start wars. Art is supposed to make us happy not the opposition .
Nice job Hal:)

Thanks. And things usually smooth out between people if they stop and think about what we say, and take responsibility for our actions. Hopefully, this thing will fade away and be forgotten at some point.

Perhaps you should note me and not make an entire journal entry about me? When specifically this is obviously about me. Yeah, I acted childish, but I went above and beyond when I could to help this individual and address all comments and concerns. I have a breaking point after a certain point. If someone notes me a dozen times about something simple, then I start getting annoyed. And I told this individual I couldn't answer her concerns at the time only for her then, I assume, get discouraged and then unwatch me after I favorited one of her work. That's incredibly rude to me after all I had done for this person. Anyway, that's about the whole story, and since we are airing personal issues to the community...Why don't we get all the names out in the open too?

I called PaMonk's work an abomination.
I called wildwandergirl's work mediocre.

I will make an apology to these individual in a journal entry when I get the chance. Yes, I feel bad. Yes, I WAY overreacted, but there is some kernel of reason behind why I said what I said. It's a personal issue, and you really shouldn't be getting involved. I don't appreciate it in the least. I know what I did was wrong, and I am owning up to it...To the ENTIRE community now it would seem.

Edit: I have made a journal entry. It's the best I can do at the moment, but I am truly sorry for what I did.

I didn't mention your name because I don't feel it's appropriate to drag someone's name through the mud. I didn't mention anyone in particular, though I quoted some of the things you said. Nobody but the parties concerned would have know who the person was that I referred to. The only reason the entire community now knows who said these things is because you just told them. So guess what, now you have to take responsibility for what you say.

I have literally answered hundreds and hundreds of notes sent to me asking for help. I have never responded in any derogatory manner what so ever, even when asked the same exact question several times from the same person. In my opinion, there is no excuse for the way you treated those two people. I seriously doubt there would have been any apologies offered if someone hadn't said something. What really got to me is the homophobic bullshit you spouted out. That is nothing but mean spirited, grade school mentality. Disgusting.

I'm actually gay and out. So you're wrong there. And you're right, everthing you said is correct. I can't argue with it. Don't personally care about my name getting dragged through the mud. My work is in fact very mediocre itself and if people want to stop watching me, that's fine.

But you specifically addressed this journal to me, so now the community can know what an asshole I am because I'm saying it.

Not that you're wrong but what if the person didn't log in or didn't scroll far enough in the message center yet  It's not always sure somebody ignores somebody. You never know what's going on in their house :)

The stuff about pointless criticism I sign, though! That'd be just rude.

I can see missing things in the message center, but this particular incident (criticism and name calling) was conducted in an exchange of notes, and even included homophobic drivel. I mean that's total grade school mentality coming from an adult. And it was nothing but pointless and rude in all aspects.

And if someone doesn't want to help, that's totally fine. I would much rather be ignored than to be exposed to a verbal attack like what I was told about.

As I was saying: the unpleasant conversation is without question a level to which we shouldn't resort to, even in disagreement. I know some examples myself for people who tend to go that way ;)

The point about the missing messages I still don't sign. Very often, I skip messages - not in bad intent but sometimes I get feedback or questions for which I feel I need to use some more time and hence push them to the "later" queue. I don't do this to make people feel they don't get help from me though :D maybe I'm feeling addressed where I shouldn't but I still think "ignoring" is a hostile term not always fitting :)

I understand. And ignoring is maybe a bit harsh. Taking a few days to address questions or comments is quite reasonable imo. While the journal was prompted by a specific persons actions, it was also aimed at people in general that might help others if they ask, but not to anyone else specifically. I have a lot of time on my hands and can spend that time trying to help.

People learn at their own pace. Some people need to be told things several times before they get a grip on how things work, and what seems simple and obvious to one, may not be the same to another. I don't have technical knowledge or programming and math skills, but I have some practical knowledge, so that's what I can help with.

I didn't plan on the people involved going public either. It certainly wasn't what I expected or wanted. But that's quite often how it works.

You know...I'm not saying that you can't, it's certainly your right to speak up when you feel you need to. But let me tell you, my experience that a journal like you wrote usually ends in a gigantic genital comparison, to put it mildest. Perhaps a note should be fine next time just to avoid any escalation. As I could read it went well and I'm glad but it's not always like this :D
