New Year and Nintendo DS Suggestions?

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 30, 2008, 2:13 PM
Hey everyone.  Sorry I haven't been online much at all.  I'm at my parents' house, and I've been spending quality time with the family and visiting friends.  I only get to see these people once a year, so I figure I'd lay off the internet for a while.  Oh, and my sister finally made it home on Christmas day.  The airline was going to delay her flight AGAIN (forcing her to spend Christmas day alone in a hotel!)  But she said she glared at them until they let her aboard the flight they'd gotten for her.  I'm so glad she did.  I think it's ridiculous that they can get away with that kind of thing.  Bad enough to cancel one flight like they already had....  Rrrr!

Anyway, I hope everyone's been having a lovely holiday season!  And thanks to those who responded to the Christmas message I posed last week.  In case I don't get online again before the 1st, Happy New Year you guys!  :)  Have a great time, but be safe!  I don't know about your town, but where I live, there are a lot of crazies out on the roads after midnight, so keep an eye out.

Anyone making any resolutions?  I resolved years ago never to make any more New Years resolutions, and so far I've been successful at keeping that one.  Heh.  So no reslutions from me.  Ever.

Oh, I got a Nintendo DS for Christmas (hee!).  I don't know a thing about games, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on fun games to get?  I've got Crosswords DS and Mystery Case Files Million Heir so far, and those two have been enjoyable.  And my sister's going to help me set up some way to let me doodle pictures on it, but that hasn't been set up yet.  Is there anything else that might be fun to try?

Seriously, I haven't played anything in about a decade.  I like puzzles and word games.  And I like the 2D story type games where you have to wander around finding things and figuring out clues.  And I like the old style arcade games with either a side view or bird's eye view of little characters wandering through stages, shooting and jumping.  (Do they even make those anymore?)  I'm not so keen on 3d games.  I usually find them way too confusing, especially if the screen's really busy and there's weird colorful stuff flying all over the place.  I don't mind graphic violence at all, so blood's fine.  But mostly, I just have trouble following what's going on if there's ammo flying all around.

My sister's a rabid gamer, and I'd normally ask her.  But she likes all the kinds of games that I'm not into.  And she isn't too crazy about puzzle and adventure type games.  So no help from her.  :-P

Happy Holidays! I'm so behind, family time with my girls has kept me away also... I like RPGs, but I don't have a DS, so I fail... enjoy!

Happy Holidays to you too! Family time is wonderful. I flew home to my parents' house in Ohio for a week and a half, and it was awesome as always. Mom always goes all out on the food, and Dad always grumpily complains that she only cooks the fancy stuff when my sister and I are home. ^_^

LOL, I fail too. Besides this new DS stuff I'm getting, the last video games I played were on the old NES. Super Mario Bros 2 and Metroid. :p Soooo long ago.

me heh, grumpy Dad... and yes I love family time...

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd bet I'm a gamer at least your sister's status, I just don't have a DS to give you any educated recommendations.

You can never go wrong with Harvest Moon >_>;
My little sister has Yoshi's Island but that has major crazy colors and stuff going on. Uhm....there's cooking mama, always fun.
And if you can't get anything DS specific, the DS also plays Gameboy Advanced cartridges

Happy New Year ^^

Hotel Dusk is an interesting MYstery solver game. You are a detective who wanders around talking to people (who invariably get pissed at himlol) trying to convince them to give him some clues plz. My roommate has it she really likes it. And it has a great art style.

Chocobo tales is really fun because the whole game is played with the stylus and it is made entirely of mini games. (it is sort of 3d but that is really just a sham because all the mini games are 2d lols.

I really like Etrian odyssey because it mimics the old old old OLD rpg dungeon crawler I have a team of dudes and I go look for monsters now kthxbye sort of games. And you draw MAPS which is super fun for me. + super appealing colorful artz (2d cutouts of monsters wiggling around in front of you yay!)

And if you ever liked the harvest moon games Rune factory 1 and 2 are like 500 times better than all harvest moon games before them.

oh and if you like card and board games and simulated bowling, darts, and billiards, club house games is a really good inexpensive game.

Enjoy your new toy! :D

Arkanoids: A brick-breaking game. Fast paced but really simple, though it makes you think.
Phoenix Wright: Practically infamous... you play as a defence lawyer and have to collect evidence, talk to people, question witnesses and prove your client's innocence. Awesome game.
Those are the only puzzle-y type games I have, I guess.
My other ones are a fighting game and two rpgs..

Zelda was available in the store, so I got that one yesterday. Really been enjoying it so far.

Happy New Years

As for adventure games, my sister said their rendition of Mist of DS was really nice. I'm more of RolePlaying Gamer myself, and if you are looking for any type of strategy RPG's, I'd recommend Disgaea DS and Rune Factory 2. Unfortunately they are both 3D, but there isn't a whole lot going on in it.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, definitely! :D

I got it for Christmas this year and it's really fun! It is 3D, but it plays like a 2D game (one fixed camera angle, you don't get confused as to where you are, 3D doesn't affect gameplay, etc) except in cutscenes, which you don't interact with and look pretty! :3 It's really cute and fun, with all sorts of creative uses of the DS interface, I totally recommend it!

Other than that, if you like mysteries and such, you should play Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney! Sooo much fun, and yes it's a 2D story type game~ The games after it are good too, but don't play them out of order because they have a continuing storyline!

Thanks for the suggestion, Barako. I bought Zelda since so many people recommended it, and so far, I'm really enjoying it. Although I'm a bit stuck. ^_^ It's fun!

And I've ordered Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. It wasn't available in the store, so I'll have to wait for shipping on that one.

- Brain Age
- Crosswords DS (although you said you have that. :P)
- Professor Layton and the Curious Village
- Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright

I don't know if I have a favorite DS game to recommend...but if you can find it, make use of the GBA slot with Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow :D

Animal Crossing DS is fun, too.

Stay away from Mario 64, though. The controls are way wonky, although the mini-games are fun. But you have to play the game to get the mini-games. D:

I'll third (or fourth) Ace Attorney, Zelda, Picross and Professor Layton. Planet Puzzle League isn't bad if you have someone to play against once in a while.

There's also at least one Castlevania game out for the DS if you like platformers. I haven't played it but I think my husband did, and I don't recollect lots of Castlevania-related swearing coming from him so it was probably quite decent.

Thanks so much, Vineris! I bought Zelda yesterday, and I'm loving it so far. Also ordered Ace Attorney and Professor Layton since those three games were ones that were mentioned by a lot of people. I'm so unfamiliar with games, I figure these 3 will probably keep me busy for a very, very long time, since I don't think I'll be able to solve them in the normal amount of time that most people take. :)

Castlevania was mentioned a lot too. That's next on my list although I think it'll be long while before I get to it.

Tetris DS is definitely a good DS game to get if you're into puzzles... I've got it and there's a mode where you can solve 200 puzzles and wanother mode to solve 50 slide puzzles... both pretty challenging. I totally recommend getting it.

Glad to know your sis got to her destination safely! =D

It can be... I've got the older one still. I don't know why they had to change the design of it and make a DS Lite. The older DS works just as well and frankly, i like the power button being covered since it keeps me from accidently turning it on and killing my battery life. I've done that before to my GBA's. XD

Tetris and Pacman...the only games worthy of obsession. Otherwise I believe they've ported some Final Fantasys to the DS which are always good to play. Don't have one myself so I can't recommend much more than that.

My sister got a DS for Christmas as well (and I got a PSP... we were very spoiled lol).
The only game she has for it right now is Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hour Glass. It's really fun, terribly cute, and so far it doesn't seem to be too confusing, either ;)

Also, I'm glad your sister arrived in time! I honestly think I would have started tearing up if I heard she was stuck all alone for Christmas (and, obviously, I have no clue how sad she would have felt) ={
But it's great everything worked out :D

Happy New Year, you stay safe too! (I'm always home on New Year's Eve night, so I should be pretty safe ;) )

I bought Zelda yesterday, and I love it so far. Thanks for suggesting it. A lot of people mentioned it (and a couple others).

And yeah. It's even worse. I didn't know this when I posted my journal, but my sister got onto the plane and someone else was in her seat. Turns out they'd double booked the seat, and my sister nearly didn't get to fly home again. They did eventually get her another seat though. Ugh. Craziness.

My New Year was lovely. Watched the Apple countdown with my family, and we all had ice cream afterwards to celebrate.^_^
