Feature: 6 Cool Artists

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 11, 2008, 11:04 PM
I've been wanting to feature some artists for a while, but I always put it off for one reason or another.  Now that I've finally spruced up my journal css a bit, I figure it's as good a time as any.  Especially considering a couple of my own pics were featured recently, and it felt so nice to have that happen.

Thought I'd share the love a bit and showcase some sci-fi/fantasy artists whose works I've really enjoyed.  These are all artists with 50k pageviews or less (in some cases, a lot less, unfortunately!).  So if you're bored and want some pretty arts to look at, please feel free to wander over to their galleries and take a look.  ^_^

Usage

My artwork is not stock imagery, so please don't treat it as such. ^_^

In a nutshell:
1. Don't alter/edit/mutilate my art.
2. Don't claim it as your own.

The following are fine as long as you don't alter my images. No need to contact me for permission:
  • Downloading my art for your personal viewing pleasure.
  • Using my artwork as your desktop image.
  • Printing out my art for your personal use (like putting it up on the wall of your room.)
  • Displaying my artwork UNALTERED as part of a picture gallery on your site. (It'd be nice if you gave credit.)

I would ask that you please do NOT do the following:
  • Other than re-sizing, please do NOT alter/edit my art. Do not crop it. Do not change the colors. Do not draw on top of it. Do not remove my signature. Do not add text over it.
  • Do NOT use my artwork as part of your website/blog/myspace background or layout design.
  • Do NOT use my artwork for banners, avatars, sigs, and tubes.
  • Do NOT claim my artwork as your own.
  • Do NOT take my art without permission and sell it for profit.

How was the street fair, btw? Are you going to post a journal entry on it?

It was brutal to be honest, I did it with a friend and I think the contrast between us - while fun, was a bit limiting toward the general public understanding what we're all about. Plus they aren't natural art fans at a street fair and that's hard to play with after conventions where it's all very specialized - like comics, or anime.

That aside, I did make a good connection that can seriously pay off in the long run.

But print sales wise - it took me 2 days (13 hour days, omg) to achieve 1 day worth of sales that I'd have gotten at ECCC so there is a difference for sure. More big prints went this time too, so obviously sales were further apart to hit even that number. Lot of down time.

Hmm, yeah, I suppose sales would be rougher when the people walking by aren't specifically looking for artwrok. Was the weather okay? I crewed on a 1-day shoot this weekend, and the sun was just beating relentless down on us. Ugh!

Ooh, congrats on the connection. :)

Oh it was hot as hell, Friday was tolerable, but Saturday baked us good. We were lucky to have the afternoon shade, but by then the air was so stuffy it didn't matter much.

Sunday wasn't too bad but by then our patience for heat was gone heh.

Digital is lovely, but traditional also offers so many possibilities. :) It's just a pity that they so often don't scan well, so that seeing them on a computer screen just doesn't to them justice, you know?

I really don't know what's considered a lot of pageviews. It's all relative, I suppose. ^_^

i love my scanner, still you are right, some lil things loose the real dimension.
especially when one works with media which suggests that you have to visually... feel the texture. if it makes sense.

No..just took me couple years to have 10.000 page views.. ^^;

:iconhakubaikou:

Yes! Exactly. The texture doesn't quite translate. Neither do the colors if someone doesn't have a top notch scanner. I'm glad you have a good one, but many times, people don't.

10k is a lot, I think. :) But then, there are people with millions, so I figure 50k's as good a number as any. I just picked it at random. ^_^

yeh.. scanner is important. Tho nothing can give the real feeling. Still it is a savior. And Im glad to be able to show my stuff ^-^~

yeh, I gathered this much^^~ "popularity" here is a funny thing. Sometimes I also find people who are great artists but aren't noticed.. *shrug* I wonder if it is the fault of the structure of the gallery. It's quite hard to watch new stuff arriving. I usually find new interesting people through other's favourites tho.

Me too. I love surfing through people's favorites galleries. I have my DA channels set to certain artists' fave galleries. This way I don't even have to click that much. I just go to the channels page and they're all there for me to see. Lazy me.

IMO, ever since DA switched to the new browsing page algorithm half a year ago, it's been harder to find really cool art. A lot of the stuff on the frontpage is just sketches and goofy fun stuff.

yeah i kinda am at a loss sometimes as well, you have to make a search or just go through a lot of weird stuff to find somethign to your linking, or other's friends favourites^^;

Not as customer friendly. ^^;
Still.. we mange somehow~

Holy cow, Haku, thanks so much! Can't say I'm worthy of any featuring...yet, though...my skills have atrophied, getting them though, like an amnesiac RPG player character relearning the ropes xD

Pffft, so modest! :) I just featured whatever I liked.

And as for atrophied skills, I'm not worried. You're a smart cookie, I'm sure it'll come back pretty quickly for you. Heh!

Beautiful features of course. :laughing: 50k is what I would consider a lot... but then, looking at what they SHOULD be getting, it is still a small number.

I have to admit, I wasn't sure what a good number would be. 50k seemed reasonable. Do you think it's too high?

:iconparanoid-duckkie:
Paranoid-Duckkie Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2008
Ha ha, no not really... it's just a matter of perspective... most on dA never even reach that number... but a lot of really good artists sort of live in a class of their own when it comes to page views and when you see an artist you feel should be in that category and they aren't, it is worth advertising them.

Ah, okay. I think I'll keep it at 50k then. It's a nice, easy number to remember. :)

tanq is one of my favorite artists and yet is so underappreciated! he was doing that stuff digitally and in real medium long before a lot of other folks came up in prominence. And what gets me is that he's still pursuing science!! lol.

anyways, these are great selections. I will go mosey in their galleries >D

Tanq was one of the first people I remember meeting on Gaia and DA. (I found both sites around the same time.) And he is, to date, the only person I've ever paint chatted with. That was fun. :)
