-----

Now that my message center has calmed down a bit, I want to convey my sincere gratitude to karemelancholia and cosmosue for the DD yesterday.  Thank you so much, you two!

And many thanks to everyone who visited my gallery and left comments, faved something, or stuck me on their watch list.  I normally do make an effort to thank people for favs and watching and such, but erm... in this case, I hope you can forgive me if I chicken out and run for the hills.  I'm not used to so much traffic and so many messages.  I'm very sorry, but I don't think I'll get to most of them.  ^^;

Okay, onto other things.... I don't want to sound like a broken record, but my annual Rurouni Kenshin contest deadline is coming up soon.  Friday, August 15th, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time.  For those who've been planning to participate, I do hope you can finish your entries.  I'm looking forward to seeing some lovely art from you!  And for those who weren't aware of it, the contest site/info is here:  hakubaikou.com/contests/2008/f…

To give this journal some substance, a survey for anyone who's bored:

When in search of ideas for your art...
1.  Are there any visually inspiring movie(s) that you watch?
2.  Any particular songs that help?
3.  Books or magazines?  (Including comics and manga.)
4.  Any foods/drinks that help?
5.  When/where do you get most of your ideas?

1- inspiring movies? hmm not one that i can place
but LOTR and other 'epic' movies put me in the mood to draw something..epic! heh

2- Songs... anyhing that I'm really feeling. Like, if im really down ill listen to something rather depressing...or if i happen to be feeling spazzy and happy and goofy, ill listen to some upbeat stuff...and, when i find a song or a mood that 'works' i draw :D usually songs with meaning and not *just* about little petty things do the job well

3-books: as far as books go, if they have a lot of imagery and visual references, it gets me in the mood for fanart! :D
magazines: not so much, i dont read them often O.o

4- chocolate milk is a favorite of mine, but as far as actually helping the drawing process in any way, it doesnt really do much other than make me not thirsty, heh

5- i get most of my ideas from observing people and thinking of compositions whenever i can. My room is a place where i feel really relaxed and can allow me to draw a lot of different things at once. When out and about, i might find something really cool that i just *have* to draw, but i dont draw more than one or two pieces usually.

wow. i wrote a lot.

O.O

Well generally, I try not to search for inspiration because then I'm afraid my piece will look more like a fanart than something original. Y'know, that'd I'd be TOO inspired so whatever inspired me would seep through my piece. If that makes sense. But generally:

1. Any fantasy or fantasy-esque, like not necessarily witches and dragons but something with a lot of imagination and creativity. Liiike: Labrynth, The Dark Crystal, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Disney's Beauty and the Beast (I"m a sucker for a romance, shut up!) Hell Boy 1/2, Pan's Labrynth

2. Songs really depend on my mood. When writing I usually tend to listen to scores or instrumentals otherwise I start singing the words to whatever song I'm listening to rather than write XD I like emotionally pieces. But what defines it as emotional is odd for me. It's just blam, if I feel soemthing then yea. Like Pirates of the Caribbean 2, the Kraken song, totally awesome.

3. Oddly enough I can't think of any. I read books/mangas more to escape than to seek inspiration. When I read I get COMPLETELY sucked in, to the point when I look up I expect to see whatever it is I was just reading.

4. Coffee. Always coffee. Soda if I've already had like, three cups of coffee. Anything that tastes sweet, I'm a munchier. But it doesn't really help me think or anything, it's just easier to eat a little snack or candy while painting than to knock back a whole plate of ziti or something.

5. When? When I'm NOT thinking about it. I can sit for HOURS brainstorming and come up with absolute shit, step away to play some videogames or make some food or use the bathroom even, and bit by bit it starts coming to me. Probably when I relax I'd say, 'cuz I don't stress it so my mind goes down different tangents. Where? On the toilet LOL, or in bed. When I lay back and just get comfy to go to sleep that's when it starts pouring in. And I'm like, "damn why didn't I think of that before?" Or more often, "dammit how am I going to remember this tomorrow?" I think I get some of my best ideas when I'm doing something positively mundane, 'cuz my mind really honestly wanders. Fatnasy is my reality, I'm there more than I'm here. Daydreaming is my constant stream of thought, so more often than not I'm going to come up with something.

Ooh, I love the Dark Crystal!

Argh, now I'm craving ziti. :( It's weird, but drawing's one of the few times in which I never think about eating. In fact, I often forget to eat if I'm in the middle of drawing something fun. I do like to have a cup of tea nearby though.

1. Are there any visually inspiring movie(s) that you watch?

I would say Spirited Away.

2. Any particular songs that help?

It varies a lot.

CLAMP's work, The Art of Spirited Away, fashion magazines and landscape photography magazines.

Coffee and tea.

5. When/where do you get most of your ideas?

1. Are there any visually inspiring movie(s) that you watch?
Hm, Lord of the Rings? And The Black Stallion if I wanna do horses.
2. Any particular songs that help?
Depends on what I'm drawing, the mood of the song often effects that of the art... If I'm doing anime fanart then I listen to the theme songs of the anime or songs that were in AMV's of that anime and it helps a lot. Some songs, like anything by Josh Groban, always help because they're usually sad and I always seem to draw better if I'm sad or happy, not just my usual mood, "bored."
3. Books or magazines? (Including comics and manga.)
Not really...
4. Any foods/drinks that help?
None in particular but I usually snack a little while I draw on paper, but not while doing digital art cause my mom is paranoid I'll get crumbs in the keyboard. D:
5. When/where do you get most of your ideas?
I don't know if I even get ideas...most of the time I just sorta feel like doodling and get out paper or photoshop and just draw, and if it starts to look good then I add a background and details and color.
Not very professional, but it works. =P

It's too bad- I was looking forward to participating, but I'm not going to be able to make the deadline. Ah well. I'll get it next time!

When in search of ideas for your art...
1. Are there any visually inspiring movie(s) that you watch?
Yes. Things like "Underworld" and it's sequels, "The Mummy " and it's sequels, "the Last Samurai", "Memoirs of a Geisha" "The House of Flying Daggers" "Tomb Raider" etc, etc.

2. Any particular songs that help?

Oh yes. Dark songs that bring out the idealisms in the world to a subjectice light. Think Metallica, Tarot, Kataklysm, Children of Bodom...many many others, too.

3. Books or magazines? (Including comics and manga.)

Kenshin, Vampire Knight, Hellsing, Peacemaker Kurogane...plenty of them.

4. Any foods/drinks that help?

coffee, tea, and chocolate. It's a proven fact that the brain releases more of it's energy when stimulated by sugars or caffeine, thus letting the creative juices flow more purely!

5. When/where do you get most of your ideas?

That's hard to say. Sometimes they come from dreams, other times music, art, news, people, events...everywhere at anytime, I guess.

2. My favorite songs, and songs that have a greater meaning
3. Any good book, the last one that inspired me was 'Memnoc the devil' by anne rice
4. Healthy food, keeps you thinking better
5. When I'm daydreaming or thinking about something

I would have made a third entry... except that there are so few other entries, I feel like I'm being greedy for attention with just two. ^^;

I get inspiration for my art from all of those things... and more... my problem never was finding inspiration, but sorting through it and deciding what to do with all of it. I get ideas all the time... often when I sleep too. I'm usually frustrated with the fact that I don't have time to draw everything I think of, especially now because it takes me longer for each picture.

:iconhakubaikou:
hakubaikou Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2008
Nah. Can never have too many, I always say. Heh! ^_^

I'm the same, if I do have a problem with art, it's usually that I don't have enough time to work on all my ideas. I think I've maybe had trouble with inspiration a couple times, but they didn't last long, and they were pretty minor.

I was wondering more about specific titles with this. Like if you watch movies for inspiration, which movies? (Heh. Trying to find out if there are any really pretty ones that I haven't yet seen.)

Well I made one more entry when I saw more other entries... I didn't feel like I was monopolizing the contest anymore by putting up too much of my own stuff when there was so little else. And wow, the entries are great. i sought out the deviant accounts and everything for some of them.

Well for titles, Evanescence, Vienna Teng, Nightwish, Lincoln Park, Jewel, Incubus, KT Tunstall, for music... For films and the sort, Kenshin... obviously, Lord of the Rings, Dragon heart, V for Vendetta... Narnia... for books, most everything I read is inspiration... recently, Howl's Moving Castle, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Da Vinci Code, (also those movies) The Acorna series of books, a lot of Poetry and the Discover Magazine... and The Elegant Universe. Science has a tendency to spark my thinking. I don't know there are a lot more that I'm not thinking of.

I would have to say that music is the strongest inspiration for developing plot... while books for the actual writing. And as for art... Music and other people's art, as well as my own original stories are my main sources of inspiration.

That better?

Gratz on the DD! =D

1. I really don't watch a whole lot of inspiring movies... it's usually the video games that get me inspired
2. Idk about a particular song, but I listen to music that fits the mood of the picture, but most of the time, I listen to Nightwish or Within Temptation, both symphonic metal bands
3. Most of the time when I read a book, it's usually a horror book... especially DooM 3: Worlds on Fire... it makes me wanna go play DooM 3 again! XD
4. I'd like to start drinking Mountain Dew when I draw because that's the only drink that gives me a spurt of energy and optimism. Coffee or other caffeinated beverages put me to sleep.
5. Most of my ideas come when I'm on msn w/ my friends or at school.

I don't play them as much as I used to since I chat with a bunch of people at once and it's hard switching from window to window multitasking and managing time between friends, XD

Grats on your DD! Very well deserved.

1. It depends on what sort of image I am working on. If its of people, I tend to go for old black and white classics, especially obscure ones, for horror I guess the one that sticks most in my mind is the original nosferatu (check here for public domain movies: [link] ), for more manga style ones I check out different anime for ideas for poses etc (you can find some here: [link] )
2. Songs also depend on the type of image I am working on, though I am currently liking the Anathema album 'Alternative 4' that I found again when sorting through stuff.
3. General manga for poses, and the Vampire Hunter D novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi because they have the most wonderful description and imagery in the writing.
4. Pepsi Max (my drug of choice) and hobnob biscuits/cookies
5. Late at night or sitting on the toilet (not sure if thats why my ideas tend to be a bit shit lol ^.^)

Ee! Congrats on the DD!

1. Not really, but if I'm in a mood to draw dark gothy vampiry things, watching Perfect Creature or Bram Stoker's Dracula seems to help.
(also, since you mentioned Hellboy 2, anything by Guillermo del Toro. His movies are so visually inspiring.)

2. "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, and lots of soundtracks of things. Also the band RA and singer Voltaire, for specific characters I assign their songs to.

3. Books...eh...sometimes whatever book I'm really enjoying from the library, but for visual inspiration it's usually a well-drawn comic book, like anything drawn by *stuartimmonen.

4. No. Eating takes up one too many hands!

5. Wee hours of the mornin', dining room table (when and where I'm at right now XD)
