Anime Expo: Con Report

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 7, 2008, 11:09 PM
Edit: 10.Jul.2008

Oh, Gawd, I love v6!!!  That is all.

Journal Entry

Another AX has come and gone, and I must say that this year was absolutely wonderful.  Artist alley was well organized.  I liked having the con in Los Angeles (because it was local for me).  And I got to see many familiar faces and also met a lot of new ones.  Thanks so much to those who stopped by my table, those who signed my guestbook, the very kind people who purchased art from me, cool artists I traded art with, and folks who visited the DA dealer's hall booth while I was there.

I spent the majority of time with Fairytwister, Angiechan13, and HelloCaity.  Thanks, you three, for making this con such a marvelous experience.  Breakfasts at IHOP, hunting for sushi each night, flat out Epic Searches for boba, driving through seedy parts of town, watching fireworks in the garage in Little Tokyo, watching in horrid fascination as a certain someone (who shall remain nameless) scarfed down enough Pocky to feed a small nation, prolonged giggle fests in which Angie and Caity laughed so hard they couldn't inhale, s-girl's random noises, roller coaster-like exit ramps, spontaneous Waaaaaaalll-Eeee imitations.... It was all fantastic.  You guys are a blast to hang out with.  Thank you for being so awesome.  :)

I didn't really see much of the con, to be honest.  Spent most of my time hanging out in Artist Alley.  But that's really where I enjoy myself the most, and it was such a pleasure talking with people there.  I liked the spacious hall in which we were located.  And I liked the way the rows were set up.  My only regret was that I didn't wander around enough, and I didn't have a chance to talk to everyone that I wanted to meet.  But otherwise, it was great.

Got to see jadedice, fongmingyun (thanks for the Kenshin print!), Summoner-Lenne, Wen-M, gambitgurlisis (and friends), and Eeni again.  Always a pleasure seeing you guys, and I hope to see you again at future cons!  Also saw RMA, Zero, and Dri (ever so briefly!) again.  And Omasu who gave me a box of blueberry Pocky.  Awesomeness.  Thanks so much for the free food!

It was a pleasure meeting emilynguyenart and lychi for the first time.  You guys are so nice!  :)  Jupeboxgal is another person I met for the first time this year.  Thank you so much for the wonderful Kenshin drawing!  And thanks to rivetspoon and kaztielkrafts for being such considerate table-neighbors.  Also got to meet Saimain.  It was great talking to you, your brother, and your friend.  I do hope you can get a table next year!  A pleasure meeting damphyr, who was nice enough to tell me what to expect for the DA booth.

I spent a little time at the DA booth in the dealer's hall.  That was a little intimidating, and I admit I felt nervous.  But Moonbeam13 was very nice to me, and we had a lovely chat.  Also, I met lolly who was wearing a really fun pirate hat, curly blue stuff in his hair, and sunglasses.  I took a photo.  My friends said he looked like he'd be a cool biker, and I agree!  Heh.  I was half expecting him to look like a scary clown.  I'm glad he didn't.

I missed seeing iDNAR and tojisuzuhara for the first time since I've been attending AX.  :(  It made me a little sad to miss you guys, especially since I'd seen you every year before.  I know Idnar was there.  Toji, were you?  Hopefully, I'll get to see you next year.  And fevereon, DanHowardArt, gts, look, and dlin didn't make it out this year.  Bah.

Hmm.  I know I'm forgetting someone.  Apologies to whoever it is.  Where's my brain...?

Whew, this weekend went by in a blur!  Thanks again to everyone who made it so much fun!

Nice meeting you too. And yay, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I thought AA was great this year. ^_^

IHOP was a few blocks away. I don't think it was close enough to walk to, but the con was local for me, so I had my car. :b

wah... IHOPS <3 oh hey so you live in LA? I was getting to con from UCLA area but I didn't have a car so getting proper food there was preeetty difficult xD I walked over to that food court area couple blocks down near Famima and stuff to get actual food ^^;

I live just outside of LA. I'm about 15-20 minutes from downtown. :)

Yeah, unfortunately, the LA convention center doesn't have much around it within walking distance. It's the main problem, IMO. Otherwise, I actually really liked having the con in LA's convention center. It was a vast improvement over Longbeach, IMO.

i didn't see much of the con either, took a spin or two around the dealer's room, looking for toys and artbooks and then ended up just watching people's table and mingling. next year, i'm going to attend as a con goer, and not an artist. 8D

probably not. i'll, maybe, have a friend sell one item for me, but other than that, not very likely. it's too much work and i haven't attend AX or any other convention to just attend. i'm thinking the experience is different.

No, the first round was actually less than 30 minutes! LOL.

They opened up a 2nd and 3rd round, but it was so poorly publicized, many people didn't know. :(

I didn't make it out this year. Too broke! I had to pick between AX and Comic-Con, and C-C won out because of friends coming in from out of the country to go to it.

I'm glad you had a fun time, though. I hear the AA setup was way better this year!

(Maybe we'll bump into each other randomly again at Comic-Con?)

Ooh, yes! I'm definitely going to Comic Con. :)

And yeah, Artist Alley was wonderful this year. Plenty of space, a nice amount of traffic, and overnight security guards so that we could leave our stuff there without carting it around each morning. They'll be at LACC again next year, so I'm hoping it'll be just as good.

Ack! I don't have too many pictures. I tend to forget to take photos when I'm having fun. :(

But it was definitely a fun convention. Do you go to the ones near you? There must be some nice ones you can go to?

It was great meeting you, sorry I didn't get to chat longer. There were so many awwwwesome artists I wanted to hunt down and chill with. I was so scattered and my bad habit of attacking cosplayers for photos didn't help. :XD:

I wish I had more time to stop by, but since I had a table in AA this year for a friend... I didn't even have time to eat. Or take a break. Or- you get the picture. Lol. It was lovely seeing you though, and next AX, I'll make more of a try to say hi.

Actually, are you thinking about going to Anime LA? *Shifty eyes* WHY NO, I'M NOT ADVERTISING MY OWN CON, OF -COURSE- NOT! :).

Being busy in Artist Alley is a good thing! No need to apologize for it. At least I got to see you once, and you were happy, so that was cool. ^_^

I hadn't thought of it before, but Rivetspoon (my table neighbor) told me I should. A couple years back, I had made inquiries about it and was under the impression it wasn't a print-friendly con. But Rivetspoon assured me that their old 50-print limit policy has now been changed. So unless I end up working on some show, I'd definitely be interested. I figure, any local con is always good.

Rivetspoon was your table neighbor? I didn't know that!

I'm usually happy! I swear! I'm usually VERY happy! *Wishes you hadn't seen me at my worse, because I'm worried that's how you'll remember me from now on, ekk*

I'm not sure about what their print policy is, but I'd assume Rivetspoon would so I'd trust.. damn I don't know if they're a him or her. Them. Lol.

But yay! That's good :). (I unashamedly love my Anime La, soooo, ya :). ) Well, I hope I see you there for sure! ^_^.

Oh, here's some info on the symbols:

And as for why mine changed, I'm really not sure why they did that, to be honest. I just logged in one day, and there it was. :-P

yeah, that would be cool. I was hoping to put some originals together with another group who are doing fairy tales retold... I stopped working on it because of convention season and work , as well as being ahead of everyone else. If you need more contributing artists, we might be able to hook up with that effort. Let me know if you want to look at the threads on it once the Catdrool forum returns from its foray into "Domain name not found XD"

The only question I have about an artbook is price range for the consumer? I think 20-25 would have been fine in any other year, but I'm not sure what to think now...

Man, I wish I'd been able to get my group of friends down to the con. We had it all planned out and then it fell through. It sounds like you had more fun in the Artist's Alley than I had in the entire con. xD
