5 Years at DA and Contest Results

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 24, 2008, 5:59 PM
Figured I'd post a little entry today since it marks my 5th DA anniversary.  Heh.  I can't believe it's been that long.  It really doesn't feel like it.  I love this site as much as ever.  I've met so many wonderful people here.  And just associating with so many artists and enjoying myself, I feel like my art's improved in a way it wouldn't have had I not found this place.  So, anyway, thanks to everyone who pops by for a visit from time to time, and thanks to the wonderful friends and acquaintances I've made.  It's been a great 5 years, and I look forward to many more.  I count myself a very fortunate gal for having met you all.  Yay!  :)

In other news... My annual Rurouni Kenshin contest has wrapped up.  Incidentally, this is also the 5th year I've been running the contest.  :)  We had so many awesome entries this year!  Thanks so much to everyone who participated:  artists, judges, and viewers.  Awards are posted here:  hakubaikou.com/contests/2008/a…

-----

Now that my message center has calmed down a bit, I want to convey my sincere gratitude to karemelancholia and cosmosue for the DD yesterday.  Thank you so much, you two!

And many thanks to everyone who visited my gallery and left comments, faved something, or stuck me on their watch list.  I normally do make an effort to thank people for favs and watching and such, but erm... in this case, I hope you can forgive me if I chicken out and run for the hills.  I'm not used to so much traffic and so many messages.  I'm very sorry, but I don't think I'll get to most of them.  ^^;

Okay, onto other things.... I don't want to sound like a broken record, but my annual Rurouni Kenshin contest deadline is coming up soon.  Friday, August 15th, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time.  For those who've been planning to participate, I do hope you can finish your entries.  I'm looking forward to seeing some lovely art from you!  And for those who weren't aware of it, the contest site/info is here:  hakubaikou.com/contests/2008/f…

To give this journal some substance, a survey for anyone who's bored:

When in search of ideas for your art...
1.  Are there any visually inspiring movie(s) that you watch?
2.  Any particular songs that help?
3.  Books or magazines?  (Including comics and manga.)
4.  Any foods/drinks that help?
5.  When/where do you get most of your ideas?

Edit 12.Aug.2008:  Thanks so much to karemelancholia and cosmosue for the DD!  :o

Contest Update

Just a reminder that I'm holding an annual Rurouni Kenshin fanart contest, and that the deadline is August 15th.  For rules and info, please go here:  hakubaikou.com/contests/2008/r…

Feature:  7 Cool Artists

As for the feature, I'm thinking of making this a monthly thing.  I hope people don't mind.  Anyway, as with last time, I'm featuring some really cool sci-fi/fantasy artists who have fewer than 50k page views.  There's a lot of really lovely stuff here, so please feel free to look at their galleries!  Thanks.  :)

San Diego Comic Con

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 28, 2008, 11:49 PM
Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on DA much in the past week.  I was at Comic Con with my sister HelloCaity and my friend dlin.  And holy hell, was it fun.  ^_^

I'm not really going to go into crazy detail about the con, but I had a great time wandering the dealer's room and attending the various panels.  I got a book autographed by one of my favorite authors, Jacqueline Carey.  My sister got an autograph from Steve Purcell, the creator of Sam and Max (if any of you are familiar with that).  My favorite panel was the one with Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Zach Snyder, and Frank Miller.  (It was raunchy and fun.)  I ate a lot.  Slept like the dead each night.  Saw a bunch of cool costumes.  Spotted Samuel Jackson for about 5 seconds as he walked past us among some secret entourage which quickly swooped him into an off-limits room.  Bought some nice art books.  Got tons of free stuff.  Snapped a photo of Nathan Fillion as he was signing posters (although I didn't get into line for that.  It was far too crowded.)  And by pure chance, as we were leaving the con for good, I saw Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis standing nearby among the crowd, trying (surprisingly successfully) to blend in.

Man, Comic Con is wonderful.  I went for the first time with dlin in 2006, and I plan to go every year from now on if I can.  Not only is it fun and entertaining, it's often pretty inspiring as well.  Can't wait until next year.  :)

The only downside is that my DA message center is a mess right now.  And more importantly, I have a ton of work to catch up on.  No time for personal art at the moment, and that's really frustrating, since I'm so in the mood for it!  :P

Oh, I missed some really awesome panels, apparently.  There were so many, it was impossible to go to them all.  Did any of you go, by any chance?  How was it for you?  :)

Edit:  29.Jul.2008
Ugh, hurt my wrist during the stupid earthquake this morning.  (Just twisted it while grabbing onto a railing to steady myself.  Stoopid.)  But it hurts to type, so I probably won't get to my messages tonight.  Blah.

Dark Knight

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 20, 2008, 3:15 PM
So, I saw Dark Knight this weekend.  I have to say, it was a great movie, and I'd give it an 8/10.  Which is rather disappointing for me, since I very much wanted to (and still wish I could) give it a 10/10.  :(

I don't know what to say.  It was a brilliantly conceived and beautifully crafted movie, IMO.  The story was amazing.  The plot twists had me guessing the whole time.  Characters did things that surprised me and threw me off in a good way without breaking character or being unrealistic.  The themes of sacrifice, of fallen heroes, of moral choices etc. were beautifully done.  The world-building was awesome.  Gotham felt real.  The film had a grand, epic feel to it that most movies today can't touch.  It really felt like it was the beginning of a new criminal era, and that was great.  The action was great.  The gadgets were great.  The cinematography was great.  The music was great.  The mood and atmosphere were great.  The cat and mouse feel with Joker and Batman was great.  Seriously, the other films this summer aren't even in the same league as this.  So why am I giving it an 8 instead of a 10?

For me, the film had one flaw that I can't ignore.  It lacked passion.  Or heart, or chemistry, or whatever you want to call it.  It was overly cerebral, and any emotion I felt for the characters while watching it was felt as if through a barrier.  Kind of like in the winter, when you're wearing mittens.  You can feel things through them, but they're dulled and distant, and you wish you could take them off and feel with your naked fingers.  That was how this film felt to me emotionally.  I don't think it was the fault of the actors.  I think it was a stylistic choice to be understated and subtle.  Which is fine, but I think they overdid it, and I found myself watching events unfeelingly, including events that by all rights should have had me emotionally gutted.

Obviously there are thousands and thousands of people who would disagree.  I mean, the film's got a friggin' 9.7 rating on IMDb from over 40k people.  So maybe I'm the one that's screwy here, and I'm missing something.  I don't know.  But I do know that I really, really wish I could be one of those 40k people who voted a 10 on the thing.  I really wish I could have loved this movie as much as I wanted to.  I really wish I could have felt more during the movie and thought less.  I love action movies.  I love superhero movies.  And I loved the first Tim Burton Batman movie as well as Batman Begins.  I can't understand why I didn't love this one.  They got 99 out of 100 things perfect with this.  But the 1 thing they missed was a big one for me.  Argh.

I liked it a lot.  And there are so many parts of it that seriously awe me and blow me away.  But in the end, it didn't live up to the hype for me, and it felt emotionally hollow.  And that makes me really sad.

I'm going to see it again.  In the past, sometimes certain films have grown on me.  I didn't love them on first viewing, but with subsequent viewings, I liked them more and more.  Blade Runner was like that.  And it's now one of my favorite movies.  I'm hoping the same happens with Dark Knight.   By all rights, I should have loved this film.

BTW, if you're going to respond, please, for those who haven't seen it yet, INCLUDE SPOILER WARNINGS IN YOUR POSTS!!!

Entertainment or Learning?

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 18, 2008, 4:08 PM
Do you post your artwork at DeviantArt mostly to have fun?  Or to learn?  Or perhaps a bit of both?  (And if it's both, which one dominates?)

I was posting around in the forums and some of the threads there made me think of this.  I joined DA nearly 5 years go mostly out of curiosity at first.  I'd met some cool artists on another site, and they all had DA accounts, so I followed them here.

It was the first time I'd really met any fellow artists on-line.  So DA was a marvelous place to me.  For the first time ever, someone besides my family and few closest friends were actually seeing my art. You know those people in your life who really love to cook?  They cook for the sheer enjoyment of it, but they also love having someone over to actually eat what they make?  That was how I felt.  I draw for myself first, but it was wonderful actually having people (and complete strangers at that) looking at what I had done.

For me, DA has always been about entertainment/fun.  It's why I came here, and it's why I've stayed.  I love looking at other people's artwork here. I enjoy seeing worlds being created, I like being inspired.  I don't really look at artwork with the thought of critiquing just like I don't usually go into a movie theatre expecting to analyze the movie. I just want to soak everything in.

I'll critique or comment specifically on something if someone asks, but otherwise, I generally don't do that.  And I generally don't expect people to do that with my stuff either.  I post my art because I hope that people will enjoy it.  I don't really post for educational purposes.  I don't have any expectation (or desire, for the most part) of a serious comment or critique from people.

I have learned a lot from DA though.  I think just being exposed to a community like this and enjoying the artwork here makes one improve automatically. It's almost impossible to NOT improve in such an environment, IMO.  And personally, just knowing that there are viewers out there makes me want to get better in the same way a person would want to cook tastier, more ambitious dishes when they know they have company over.  The learning has been great, but it's mostly been a casual, passive side-effect of being here.  This place is an art playground for me first and foremost, not a school.

That's my personal attitude of this place.  But I was wondering if most other people felt the same way?  Based on some of the threads I've seen, it seems like some people yearn for something more.  Some folks want serious critique.  Others want comments that are more specific.  Is that what most people want here?

Why do you post at DA?  What is it that you get out of this place that you like?  What do you feel is missing?  Are you here mostly for the fun of it?  Or are you hoping to learn?  Or a bit of both?

Just wondering.  :)

Oh, by the way, I have a new poll up, but it never made it to people's message centers.  Mind voting?  ^_^

Feature: 6 Cool Artists

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 11, 2008, 11:04 PM
I've been wanting to feature some artists for a while, but I always put it off for one reason or another.  Now that I've finally spruced up my journal css a bit, I figure it's as good a time as any.  Especially considering a couple of my own pics were featured recently, and it felt so nice to have that happen.

Thought I'd share the love a bit and showcase some sci-fi/fantasy artists whose works I've really enjoyed.  These are all artists with 50k pageviews or less (in some cases, a lot less, unfortunately!).  So if you're bored and want some pretty arts to look at, please feel free to wander over to their galleries and take a look.  ^_^

Anime Expo: Con Report

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 7, 2008, 11:09 PM
Edit: 10.Jul.2008

Oh, Gawd, I love v6!!!  That is all.

Journal Entry

Another AX has come and gone, and I must say that this year was absolutely wonderful.  Artist alley was well organized.  I liked having the con in Los Angeles (because it was local for me).  And I got to see many familiar faces and also met a lot of new ones.  Thanks so much to those who stopped by my table, those who signed my guestbook, the very kind people who purchased art from me, cool artists I traded art with, and folks who visited the DA dealer's hall booth while I was there.

I spent the majority of time with Fairytwister, Angiechan13, and HelloCaity.  Thanks, you three, for making this con such a marvelous experience.  Breakfasts at IHOP, hunting for sushi each night, flat out Epic Searches for boba, driving through seedy parts of town, watching fireworks in the garage in Little Tokyo, watching in horrid fascination as a certain someone (who shall remain nameless) scarfed down enough Pocky to feed a small nation, prolonged giggle fests in which Angie and Caity laughed so hard they couldn't inhale, s-girl's random noises, roller coaster-like exit ramps, spontaneous Waaaaaaalll-Eeee imitations.... It was all fantastic.  You guys are a blast to hang out with.  Thank you for being so awesome.  :)

I didn't really see much of the con, to be honest.  Spent most of my time hanging out in Artist Alley.  But that's really where I enjoy myself the most, and it was such a pleasure talking with people there.  I liked the spacious hall in which we were located.  And I liked the way the rows were set up.  My only regret was that I didn't wander around enough, and I didn't have a chance to talk to everyone that I wanted to meet.  But otherwise, it was great.

Got to see jadedice, fongmingyun (thanks for the Kenshin print!), Summoner-Lenne, Wen-M, gambitgurlisis (and friends), and Eeni again.  Always a pleasure seeing you guys, and I hope to see you again at future cons!  Also saw RMA, Zero, and Dri (ever so briefly!) again.  And Omasu who gave me a box of blueberry Pocky.  Awesomeness.  Thanks so much for the free food!

It was a pleasure meeting emilynguyenart and lychi for the first time.  You guys are so nice!  :)  Jupeboxgal is another person I met for the first time this year.  Thank you so much for the wonderful Kenshin drawing!  And thanks to rivetspoon and kaztielkrafts for being such considerate table-neighbors.  Also got to meet Saimain.  It was great talking to you, your brother, and your friend.  I do hope you can get a table next year!  A pleasure meeting damphyr, who was nice enough to tell me what to expect for the DA booth.

I spent a little time at the DA booth in the dealer's hall.  That was a little intimidating, and I admit I felt nervous.  But Moonbeam13 was very nice to me, and we had a lovely chat.  Also, I met lolly who was wearing a really fun pirate hat, curly blue stuff in his hair, and sunglasses.  I took a photo.  My friends said he looked like he'd be a cool biker, and I agree!  Heh.  I was half expecting him to look like a scary clown.  I'm glad he didn't.

I missed seeing iDNAR and tojisuzuhara for the first time since I've been attending AX.  :(  It made me a little sad to miss you guys, especially since I'd seen you every year before.  I know Idnar was there.  Toji, were you?  Hopefully, I'll get to see you next year.  And fevereon, DanHowardArt, gts, look, and dlin didn't make it out this year.  Bah.

Hmm.  I know I'm forgetting someone.  Apologies to whoever it is.  Where's my brain...?

Whew, this weekend went by in a blur!  Thanks again to everyone who made it so much fun!

EDIT 3: 01.Jul.2008
EDIT 2: 27.Jun.08
Oh my goodness, I just noticed the apostrophe! Who do I thank for this?!?!?

EDIT 1:
    The seats were re-assigned. I'm at B-08, not B-07. :)

Anime Expo's coming up in less than two weeks, and I'm excited as hell about it! We received our table assignments today, and I'm going to be at B-08. So if you're going to the con (as an alley artist or as a guest), please come visit me! I'd love to meet you.

And for my friends and aquaintances who are also going to be at tables, which one(s) are you at? I'm so curious. Yay! I only sell art at one convention a year, so you'll pardon me if I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl at the moment. It's one of the rare times I get to see online friends. ^_^

I'm selling original prints again this year, including my most recent ones with the dragon and the steampunk Thumbelina (sent those off just in time.) I also have the zodiac poster and bookmarks that I had last year. I've added 3 bookmarks: a panda, a cat, and a squid. Yes, I know they're not zodiac animals, but trust me, the bookmarks fit in nicely with the rest.

So please don't be shy. Come visit me. :)

Also, a reminder that my Rurouni Kenshin fanart contest is still in progress. The link is in my contest section below this journal entry. Please check it out. Prizes include multiple DA subscriptions or Amazon.com gift certificates.

Oooh! I love it when I get to sit down and read a juicy book. It happens so rarely. Really pathetic when I only read about, what, maybe half a dozen novels for pleasure in a year.

I used to read like a fiend when I was younger, but now, there never seems to be enough time. Either that, or I find it much harder to be satisfied with much of what I read. Too many disappointments. I don't know if I'm just getting older and pickier, or if the quality of what gets published is going down.

So whenever one of my favorite authors comes out with a new book, and it happens to be one of their better ones, it's always such a wonderful feeling. I've really missed having a good book to devour. And I've really missed the crazy inspired feeling I get when I finish. I'm so enjoying that feeling right now.

My GOD, I so want to paint fanart right now! But aaaargh, I have other things I need to do first. Unfair!

Jacqueline Carey is an evil, evil drug dealer! I can't wait until she writes another book.

Anyway, just to give this journal a point besides me gushing and twitching like a rabid fangirl....

1. Any good sci-fi/fantasy books you'd recommend? (I tend to like lighter fantasy, more history-inspired stuff than the high fantasy stuff with dragons and elves.)

2. Any books/characters that inspire you to paint?

3. How often do you read novels for pleasure?

4. Never mind the actual story, but do you have any favorite book covers? Artwork that made you stop dead in your tracks and simply HAVE to own the book? Was the inside story as good as the cover made it seem?

Just letting you guys know, if I don't respond to your comments in the next few days, it's because Dlin and I are roadtripping up to San Jose for Fanime (just visiting, not selling in artist alley) and to visit my little sister. (Yay!) I'm going to be picking Dlin up from the bus station soon, and I'm frantically packing/cleaning right now. So, if you're going to the convention, see you there, hopefully! And if not, you'll hear from me by Monday at the latest. Although I'm pretty sure the hotel we're staying at has a wireless connection, so I might be on tonight. Knowing me with my internet addiction, that's more likely....

As many of you know, Anime Expo is coming up this July (yay!) and I've got a table there this year again. I've been wanting to do some more anime-styled art. Probably not entirely anime-styled, but definitely more influenced than the stuff I usually do. I want to do that because I feel somewhat guilty selling so much non-anime styled art in the alley. Although no one's ever really complained. Still....

Anyway, for those of you who like anime and frequent the artist alleys, is there any particular type of art you'd like to see? I do NOT sell fanart, so please don't list shows or characters. But if there are any general themes you'd like to see (like ninjas or Asian dragons or big fluffy creatures or people killing each other with katanas, blah blah, etc.) I'm all ears. Just keep them general rather than specific please.

-----

I want to thank everyone who's been voting in my polls. I've found many of them to be quite eye-opening and educational, and they're always fun for me. I appreciate all your input, both the people who comment and the people who lurk and just vote. It's all good. Thanks!

-----

I saw Forbidden Kingdom yesterday.... It was nice to see Jet Li fighting Jackie Chan in one fight, but as for the rest, um.... :(

I miss the glory days of Jet Li in the 90's. Once Upon a Time in China (the ladder sequence at the end!!!), Tai Chi Master, Fist of Legend. Aaah. Now those were cool martial arts flicks.

-----

And finally, in case you haven't noticed, I'm running a Rurouni Kenshin fanart contest again like I've done every summer since 2004. If you're a Kenshin fan, or if you know of one, or hell, if you're just bored and looking for something different to draw, please check it out. hakubaikou.com/contests/2008/f… And if you wouldn't mind helping to publicize it by either posting a link or just faving the news article I submitted, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Edit: 4-18-08

Holy shit, yay! I'm in the Pepper book! Wooooo!

--------

I was wondering how many of you watermark your artworks that you submit either here at DA or other places online. I haven't, since I dislike the way a watermark disrupts the picture. But I've been thinking about doing it. Especially on my Kenshin fanarts.

I have a FAQ with terms of usage listed on it. In it, I think I make it pretty clear that I really don't like having my images used as forum banners and as the layout of a site. And I dislike it when people alter my artwork by cropping it, placing text over it, making collages out of it, removing my signature (and sometimes replacing it with their own), changing the hair color and clothes and calling it their own character's name, and so on and so forth.

But I often have people sending me notes or e-mails stating that they've used my artwork as their avatar or banner, have edited it to smithereens, and hey, would it be okay to continue doing so after the fact even though they know it goes against the terms on my FAQ?

Eh? Why even ask me after they've already done it? Yes, I'm flattered they like my art. But no, of course I'm not happy that they swiped it and altered it. This happens far more often than I'm comfortable with. Are they expecting me to say, "Aww, thanks. For you, I make an exception." Do people think I just wrote the FAQ for shits and giggles, and that it applies to everyone except the person reading it? Do they think that just this once, I'm not going to be annoyed that someone altered my work?

I'm at a loss. I really am. I'm not sure why people have a hard time understanding this. I mean, I know there will always be people who either read the FAQ and choose to ignore it, or never read the FAQ at all. And I know I'll never know about most of those cases. I know people deal with this kind of thing all the time. And I know there's this attitude that, hey, if you put your work online, expect this to happen. (Which I think is a terrible attitude, by the way....)

But I'd like to ask -- especially those of you who have a buttload of pageviews and must have to deal with this kind of thing far more often than I -- what do you do about it? If you watermark, does it actually help? Or do people just crop it out of the image as well? Does a FAQ actually help? Or do people just ignore it and occasionally send you a note asking if it's okay that they've already done what you asked them not to do? Is there anything you can do that's effective? Or do you just throw your hands up in defeat and think, "Fuck it. Whatever." Or does this kind of thing just not bother you at all? (And if it truly doesn't, I wish to hell I could be like you.)

Sorry for the rant. I'm just a little riled up after receiving yet another note about this matter. The person who sent me the note was very polite, and I think it was really nice that he at least asked, which is more than many people would do, but I admit, I'm frustrated all the same.

Am I crazy or over-sensitive to be irritated by this? Ugh, I don't know.

What I've been up to lately....

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 15, 2008, 7:13 PM
:fella: :fella: :fella:
Journal Entry

Every once in a while, I disappear from the internet for prolonged periods. I always feel a bit of an obligation to explain what I've been up to during those times.

Been working about 70-80 hours a week (including weekends) since January and haven't really had a day off since then. I miss doing personal art. I miss posting online. I even had to ask for leave from Gaia because I'd been away for so long and was unable to adequately do much work as a mod there, and because Gaia tends to be highly addictive for me and suck up time, which I can't afford just now. (That makes me a little sad.)

But work and life in general is good though. Stressful, but very, very good! I'm busy because a few unexpectedly good things happened to me in the last few months.

The most significant thing was I lucked out big time in January and got an awesome gig as an independent contractor doing minor visual FX art on a studio feature. I'm pretty sure the movie's going straight to DVD, but it's a sequel of a well known title, and it's on a studio budget, which is way bigger than any little indie film I've ever worked on. I was originally only hired to do a quick job that would take a day. But I've ended up staying there since. The director happened to direct one of my favorite films of the 80's. And he's hired me for a couple of side projects. He's a really nice and fun guy to work for. So is the editor. It's been really cool working there.

The second, is that a screenplay that my writing partner and I wrote caught the attention of an exec at one of the major studios. We had a nice meeting last week, and are meeting again next week to plan a re-write in more detail. I don't know if they'll buy the script at the end of the re-write, but even if they don't, the experience will be invaluable for my partner and me, and I feel it'll make our script much stronger. Again, this was due to a huge amount of good luck, and I still can't quite believe a couple of beginners like us have a meeting with these guys. It's difficult to get this kind of opportunity, and I'm frankly, quite terrified about it. I hope we can do a good job....

The third thing is that the little website making company my website partner and I are working on has been getting a nice stream of steady work. Which is normally great, but right now, I'm a bit overwhelmed.

So, I'm desperate for time and pretty stressed out. But in a good way, even though I feel like I'm being pulled in three very different directions. There are days when I feel like all this stuff that's happening isn't quite real. Too good to be true or too good to last....

I still make it to DA during breaks to lurk about a bit. (The gender study was a fun little distraction.) And I'm hoping that once the visual effects gig is done, I'll be able to do more personal art. I've really missed doing that. Speedpaints are fun and all, but they don't satisfy in the same way a "finished" piece does. They're like little snacks, and I want a big meal.

As for future events, I am very much looking forward to Anime Expo this summer. I plan on going, and I hope to meet a lot of people there. Oh, and for Kenshin fans, I'm considering doing another run of my annual fanart contest if there's still interest this year. I'll continue doing that until I no longer have the time or until the fandom dies (which I hope never happens).

Anyway, I hope you've all been well and that 2008 has been a good year for everyone so far. Apologies for not answering comments and notes lately. Apologies for disappearing from both here and Gaia. I don't mean to snub or ignore anyone. But I've been terrible at keeping in touch, and I'm afraid I'm going to continue to be terrible at it for at least a few weeks more.

While, we're at it, do any of you have any cool news to share? Do tell....

Gender Study - Part 2: Stats

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 28, 2008, 11:16 PM
:fella: :fella: :fella:
Journal Entry

Thanks so much to all the artists and survey takers who participated. This doofy little survey was really fun for Fairytwister and me. ^_^

Answers to the survey are listed here: red-bird.org/gender/unblind.ht…

SURVEY STATS

Survey Takers:
-- Average score: 70%
-- Highest score: 91% (by kyan and mroopawoopa)
-- Total number of survey takers: 30
-- Female survey takers: 19
-- Male survey takers: 7
-- Unlisted gender: 4

Artist most often guessed correctly:
-- 93% guessed (H) Terra-Storm correctly as female
-- 87% guessed (D) Starke-Haz and (G) fongmingyun as female

Artist most mistaken for the opposite gender:
-- 83% of people guessed (L) fatalist as male
-- 55% guessed (A) ro-chan as male

Artist that people were most sure about:
-- 43% were very sure that (H) Terra-Storm was female
-- 43% were (incorrectly) very sure that (L) fatalist was male

Artist people were most unsure about:
-- 53% were not at all sure of (E) erickghint42's gender
-- 40% were not at all sure of (A) ro-chan's gender

INDIVIDUAL ARTIST REPORTS

Each artist is listed below with how many people guessed their gender correctly and how many guessed incorrectly. The numbers in parentheses indicate how many people were sure of their guess. Some survey takers did not list how sure they were, so the numbers may not add up quite right. I've listed some survey taker comments for each artist.

(A) :iconro-chan: ro-chan
-- 13 right (1 very, 6 somewhat, 5 not sure)
-- 16 wrong (2 very, 2 somewhat, 7 not sure)
-- 1 no-vote
-- Comment: "Male. Not at all certain. It has this abstract, somewhat realism based feel to it, and most artists I know who do this kind of art are guys."
-- Comment: "The fact is, I've seen both males and females use such bright, bold colors and draw faces in such a solid way. The reason I choose female here is because I suspect image 2 may be a self portrait (watch me be totally wrong >_> "
-- Comment: "Female, not at all certain, based purely on the colours used."

(B) PlusCandy: www.mangarevolution.com/PlusCa…
-- 25 right (3 very, 14 somewhat, 3 not sure)
-- 5 wrong (0 very, 3 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- Comment: "Female. Somewhat certain. Image two, the male character is very soft and cutesy with cute details to the outfit. It just doesn't strike me as an image a male would draw of another male."
-- Comment: "Male. Not certain. I think this one could be misleading too: I've seen many male anime fans who draw in this style when they're *young*, around 13~15 years of age. I don't think any guy older than this would draw this way, though."

(C) :icondanhowardart: kuroitora
-- 24 right (10 very, 8 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- 5 wrong (1 very, 1 somewhat, 2 not sure)
-- 1 no-vote
-- Comment: "Female. Somewhat certain. It shows kick@$$ women, could be a guy who is turned on by action girls or a girl who likes to empower women in her art..."
-- Comment: "Male, somewhat certain, a lot of action which is stereotypically a male preoccupation."
-- Comment: "Male. Very certain. Sexy fighting girls? That's either a guy or a professional gaming artist."

(D) :iconstarke-haz: Starke-Haz
-- 26 right (8 very, 9 somewhat, 3 not sure)
-- 4 wrong (0 very, 2 somewhat, 2 not sure)
-- Comment: "The first image is a portrait of a lovely woman, but it's not especially provocative. She actually looks like a real human being, not overly stylized to fit the ideal (XP). Second image: huge eyes, lots of purple and ruffles... I rarely see guys draw like that! Third image: rather slender looking and attractive male character. Also, the outfit is a bit more... flamboyant(?) then I would expect a male to draw."
-- Comment: "Male. Somewhat certain. It looks like a girlgriend picture, a pretty anime girl... which a lot of guys like drawing, and a cool mysterious guy which guys tend to like drawing... the third picture doesn't show any features to make me think that the character is supposed to be hot... so I doubt a girl drew him...."

(E) :iconerickghint42: erickghint42
-- 18 right (1 very, 5 somewhat, 7 not sure)
-- 12 wrong (0 very, 2 somewhat, 9 not sure)
-- Comment: "I could go either way. Because I must choose, I'll say female only because image 3 is of an adorable little boy. (heehee, that expression is great XD)"
-- Comment: "First I thought this one was male but then I went female just because it痴 more typical to see child photography of that nature from females, but now even as I知 typing this I知 thinking male again so this one really has me stumped. I値l go 52/48 female, haha."
-- Comment: "Male. Somewhat certain. I don't know anything about photography; I just feel this one is male. XD"

(F) :iconfirstborn: Firstborn
-- 18 right (3 very, 11 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- 12 wrong (1 very, 5 somewhat, 3 not sure)
-- Comment: "Male. Somewhat certain. The violent themes and imagery have a masculine theme to them."
-- Comment: "In the first two images, the males' figures are very slender and well muscled... more "elegant" and "beautiful" than "strong" - it fits with the sort of androgynous trend of drawing attractive males that female artists seem to be leaning toward."
-- Comment: "Female. Very Certain. The males in these drawings are all barely clothed, and seem to be in pain."

(G) :iconfongmingyun: fongmingyun
-- 26 right (8 very, 12 somewhat, 2 not sure)
-- 4 wrong (0 very, 1 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- Comment: "Male. Somewhat certain. It has the detailed almost calculated feel that many guys I know put into their art."
-- Comment: "Female. Somewhat certain. The artist cared a lot about detail, seems female to me."
-- Comment: "This has been the hardest one to decide so far but I知 going to go with female, but obviously I知 not positive. The type of pose in the second piece was most indicative for me, plus the prettiness of that boy."

(H) :iconterra-storm: Terra-Storm
-- 28 right (13 very, 8 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- 1 wrong (0 very, 0 somewhat, 0 not sure)
-- 1 no-vote
-- Comment: "Female. Very certain. Because it's cute, colorful and happy."
-- Comment: "The uber huge eyes and furry ears definately make me think this artist is female."
-- Comment: "Female. Mostly based on the bright sun picture and the catgirl."

(J) :icontt-tt: TT-TT
-- 23 right (8 very, 6 somewhat, 5 not sure)
-- 7 wrong (1 very, 3 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- Comment: "Female. Not at all certain. The colors seem too soft for a guy?"
-- Comment: "Female. Very certain. This artist put all the popular KH boys in one image... yup, that's about it..."
-- Comment: "Male, 70/30, based on the stoic nature of the poses."

(K) :iconparanoid-duckkie: Paranoid-Duckkie / manic-goose / bypolarbear

-- Comment: "I am completely torn on this one b/c the first one makes me think male based on the sword and the shadowy back-image, the third makes me think female based on the romanticism of the pose, and the second could really be either. I知 tempted to be perverse and say male just because I致e thought so many others were female. In the end, just because of that danged third pic, I知 going to have to go with female thoughagain."
-- Comment: "Male. Very certain. I see more landscapes done by guys than girls"
-- Comment: "Female. 100% certain. 'cause that's Paranoid-Duckkie! XD I'd recognize that RuroKen fanart anywhere!"

-- 25 wrong (13 very, 6 somewhat, 1 not sure)
-- Comment: "Male. Very certain. A lot of sexy female characters with big boobs"
-- Comment: "Deadpool with two girls and a catfight? ...Girl, because the signs are pointing to guy way too hard. "
-- Comment: "Based on the first two I wanted to say male, just because of the type of clothing, poses, and large chests on the women, but the last one almost made me want to say female as often, in my opinion, when artists depict things to get a point across they make the subject the same gender as themselves and while that could be a long-haired boy it strikes me as a girl. For the sake of continuity in being stereotyping though I値l go ahead and say male. ^_-"
-- Comment: "Female. Somewhat certain. First gut reaction was to say "male", but the shapes in teh shading make me say otherwise."

Gender Study - Part 1: Answers

Fairytwister and I are both crazily busy this month (alas), so the data is still being compiled. However, s-girl has at least put up the answers so that those of you who are dying of curiosity can at least get some satisfaction.

See answers here: red-bird.org/gender/unblind.ht…

I haven't seen all the results from s-girl's batch of participants yet, but as for the ones I received, no one got all 11 artists right.

I'm really looking forward to the final results. They've been really interesting so far.

Fairytwister and I will post them as soon as we have a pocket of freetime. Thanks very much to all those who participated. And I hope people are enjoying this.

Oh, and please do visit the DA galleries of the artists who took part in this study. I think some of the genders may surprise you. I wonder if your opinions would have been different had you seen their entire gallery, rather than just 3 sample images.

Gender Study - Please participate! ^_^

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 16, 2008, 12:31 AM

Journal Entry
Fairytwister and I would like to announce that our little study is up! Yay! It's basically a very unscientific, but hopefully fun questionnaire regarding expectations of artist gender based on a few selections of artwork.

WHAT THE STUDY IS ABOUT:

Basically, we've posted artwork samples from 11 artists. These samples are images that the artists felt are most representative of who they are.

Your job, should you choose to participate, is to guess whether these artists are male or female based solely on their artwork. S-girl and I really have no idea what kind of results we're going to get, but they should be interesting. And we know this study isn't perfect, but really, it's just meant to be fun. ^_^ Please join us in this quest for knowledge! It only takes a short while.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
    1. S-girl has posted the questions and artwork on the Study Page here: red-bird.org/gender/ 2. Fill out the questions and send your answers to either s-girl or myself via deviant note. Please include the words "Gender Study" in the subject line of your note.

QUESTIONNAIRE SAMPLE FORMAT:
(In the real questionnaire, you'd use the artist's assigned letter, not "X" obviously.)

    X. Male. Somewhat certain. I think he might be a guy because the picture has a gun in it, OMG!

(Don't forget to tell us your own gender!)

DEADLINE: Sunday, February 24, 2008.

AFTER THE DEADLINE:

We'll post results and stats soon after the deadline. At that time, we'll also be posting links to all the artists who participated. Please visit their DA pages when we post them. They were all good sports about letting us use their art. ^_^

Please help spread the word! The more survey takers we have, the more fun this will be!

COPYRIGHT INFO:

Please be aware all artwork in this study was used with permission from the artist. Also, the images have been marked with a watermark. Stealing is bad, mkay?

Help haku and s-girl in a doofy study! :-D

Hey everyone, :iconfairytwister: and I have too much time on our hands. Yay! Heh. Just kidding. But we are running 2 versions of a doofy little study, and we need people to participate.

We'll give exact details in a bit, but if you're interested, please PM me and let me know. Also, please include 3 thumbs of deviations that you feel best represent you.

Again, if you're interested, it must be thumbnails sent via PM. If you post thumbs in this thread, I guarantee you, you will not be selected.

If we select you, we'll let you know more details. And please understand that we'll be making selections based on how well deviations work for our not-so-scientific little study, NOT based on how well you draw or how cool or nice you are as a person. So please don't take it badly if we don't select you. It's nothing personal, and it's got nothing to do with your skill level!

Thanks! This won't be huge or epic or anything. But we're hoping it'll be a random bit of fun. ^_^

We'll be accepting PM's from now until Feb 7th. If you know anyone who might be interested, please direct them either to s-girl's journal or this one. Thanks in advance to all who are interested!
