Homer's Odyssey

Many years ago, in ancient Greece, Homer had a writer's block - he needed a monster for his character Odysseus to grapple with on an island. Minotaur? Been used. Medusa? Naw...hey, wait! Poor Leela is seen here in a familiar situation, waiting for someone who hasn't shown. I've been told that my sense of humor is 'obvious' - I've never denied it. All characters are the property of Matt Groening. The Odyssey? I'm not quite sure...maybe the gods themselves...

LOL! Never thought about it that way...

My original idea was to have Leela at the ampitheater all ticked off because some guy comes on stage dressed as a cyclops...I think this way turned out better...

Gotta love it! I'm a mythology nut, after all!

I take it that you've seen Leela's Odyssey? [link] That was actually my first Futurama pic, back when I barely knew who the characters were. The Homer ones were such a simple joke...it would have been nice to tie them in together as a series, like the Avatar ones. Mythology is great - I had so many ideas hit me all at once this weekend that I just couldn't get everything cranked out. Also, check out that horrible na'vi beast "The Selmatar" [link] .

It was a fun pic to do. Thanks! Her flesh tone and the Simpson yellow skin are copic markers, which cost a bunch, but work great.

Nice pun there. :giggle: I also like her wristwatchsundial.

The idea started so simply...two guys named Homer. The watch was almost an add-on at the last minute. She was originally going to be shooting Homer a pissed-off look. Imagine how angry she was when she went to see the play!

It actually wasn't a play, it was a poem. ;-) But your point remains valid.

I guess my mind goes to all of those ampitheaters there. It's hard to keep all that stuff straight - I have to keep sneaking over to wiki for help. The last time I studied mythology was in high school in 1979 LOL.

Heh, been a while, then. ;-)

It was a sweet deal in our sophomore year...we got to break our english classes down into seperate little classes - I took science fiction for one, and mythology for another. In the SF class we read "Thunderclap", the story that the Simpsons THOH was patterned after (remember Homer going back in time and killing different animals?).

I've heard of that story. Never read it, though. :-(

There are several movie versions, but the 1997 tv version with Armand Assante is really good. My first Futurama pic [link] was from that story.

Homer is not yet blind here. Does this happen when she notices what he's doing?
Gulliver63's avatar
I didn't try to get it that historically correct...it would be funny to imagine her getting mad as all hell when she sees the play. Homer probably goes blind later after all the Duff he's had to drink over the years...:)

lol... hope you continue with this an put zaf braagain(probably not spelled right) as odysseus. 'cause hes hilarious.

Interesting...I'll have to kick around some ideas for that. Just the idea of him running around poor Kif to do his errands merits some doodling. I'll have to kick around some of my favorite scenes...you know that my first Futrama comic was the cyclops scene [link] - I had to do a lot of research for that picture because I barely knew who the characters were!
cayce-fan's avatar
lol... really? i can see how that would be difficult than. ;P
you've hear of rim & stimpy? (i hope) =p
Gulliver63's avatar
Ren and Stimpy? Of course...you know that it's Billy West of Futurama doing the cat...
cayce-fan's avatar
hey... that's were i was headed. :chainsaw:

Slurmed.com has an archived interview with West and DiMaggio where he talks about those days...I think the other guy left at some point, and he had to do both voices. I like two episodes...one where the cat is a giant, and the one where the cat wins a million dollars writing a jingle for cat food...
cayce-fan's avatar
hm... slurmed.com you say. i'll have to check that out thanks, man.
you know of the cartoon 'baby huey' you know with the big oafish duck wearing a giant diaper? cause that show was hilarious.

It is an older story, nearly a year old, so you'll have to go back in his website to find it. And be prepared to sit a while, as it is a big interview, but it's well worth it. Also, Comedy Central's website had all the Futurama voice talent in little interviews...Lauren Tom explains why Amy has boots and John DiMaggio tells us that Bender sounds like any drunk in a bar in the northeast.
