Red cloth - A copy of Nancy Fletcher's painting by GuandiWu Red cloth - A copy of Nancy Fletcher's painting by GuandiWu
Some day in April this year, I came across a picture on Pinterest (About five months after I started self-teaching drawing). It's a picture of an original oil painting by an artist named Nancy Fletcher. She's so good that I just couldn't move my eyes aways from it.

This vivid and bright piece of red cloth, together with an old-fashioned communist style cup and the green almost dusty bottle, make a strong imagination of communism of last century. The powerful, yet brutal and deadly dream of a whole Chinese generation, still haunting China's modern society.

The "Godfather" of Chinese rock, a great musician, called Cui Jian, wrote a famous song “A Piece of Red Cloth", conveying this ambiguous feeling of a communist citizen who is innocently walking towards an imaginary happiness and hope built by propaganda. It's a collective memory.

All of those came back to me when I saw this painting. At the time I was still practicing my pencil skills. I hadn't really touched any color but I do have a box of pastel given by a friend.

Thus I did a copy.

The original work is a fantastic still life painting. You guys should check it out! Here is the link:
