A World of Ice and Fire

George R R Martin has written five books in a series of seven books about a World of Ice and Fire, mainly consisting of the western continent of Westeros, the eastern continent of Essos, and the warring houses on these continents. The books have sparked a television show named after the first book, A Game of Thrones, which follows the story of the books with some changes to characters and events, and due to popular demand has been written faster than the books, covering events which have not yet occurred by book five. The eighth season comes out on April the 14th.

WARNING  - both book series and television series have a lot of sex, rape, abusive relationships and incestuous relationships.
For in-depth classic medieval fantasy worlds with less sex and rape I recommend anything by J R R Tolkein, the Belgariad by David Eddings or the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Personally I prefer fantasy worlds with a science fiction twist, such as Terry Pratchett's Discworld or Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere - all these may dip into 'adult content' but not to the same extent as a Song of Ice and Fire.

The plot of Game of Thrones follows several houses in Westeros:

House Stark: the northern House, whose symbol is the direwolf and whose motto is the ominous phrase ‘winter is coming’. ‘Winter’ in this world is like an ice age, lasting several years, and a little like a zombie apocalypse, because all who die during the winter are able to return to life as part of an army of the undead. The plot of the first book follows the head of the house, Eddard Stark, investigating the murder of the hand of the king. After this, the family is split up; his wife and oldest legitimate son Robb travel together as Robb becomes the King in the North, the daughters of the family Sansa and Arya are trapped in King’s Landing for a time, Arya escaping disguised as a boy and Sansa escaping into the possession of the devious Lord Baelish, and the youngest sons of the house Bran and Rickon travel beyond a giant ice wall in search of the supernatural.

House Lannister: the lion-themed house where everyone is golden and lionlike. Tywin Lannister is an army general, his offspring include the twins Cersei and Jaime Lannister, and the dwarf Tyrion Lannister, who is a bit of an outcast from his family. Cersei is married to the king Robert Baratheon, and her son Joffrey Lannister inherits the throne when he dies. Joffrey, the offspring of Cersei and Jaime (yup, these books are full of incest), is a terrible person.

House Greyjoy: a cheerful bunch who believe in stealing and brutality. They own the Iron Islands and lots and lots and lots of ships. They are the sea-faring nation, and Balon Greyjoy seeks to become king when Robert Baratheon dies. Theon Greyjoy goes from being friends with the Stark family to overthrowing the Stark lands to impress his dad. The Greyjoy words are ‘we do not sow’ (meaning they reap what others have sown) and their symbol is a kraken. They are also fond of talking about the ‘iron price’ rather than the ‘gold price’ – rather than pay for something with gold you should use an iron sword to slay merchants to steal their stuff.

House Baratheon: the war for the iron throne is created when Robert Baratheon dies. His brothers Renley and Stannis then try to go for the throne, but Renley dies mysteriously, and Stannis becomes more and more obsessed with his witch advisor Melisandre. The Red Lady is delighted with magic returning in the world, and wants to use blood sacrifices to ensure Stannis’s victory. Stannis’s main advisor, Davos, has a stronger moral compass and keeps advising Stannis away from witchy things. The Baratheon symbol is a stag.

The Night’s Watch is not a house but they have symbols (crows, ravens) and oaths and stuff; the Night’s Watch live on castles on a giant ice wall that protects Westeros from ice zombies and the eternal winter, and some barbarian tribes called wildlings. Jon Snow, illegitimate son of Eddard Stark, was exiled to the wall as he could never be a true heir of House Stark. He becomes friends with Samwel Tarly, and together they try to work out how to defeat the undead hoards before the next winter arrives.
(I could not find Night’s Watch stamp so have a dishevelled Jon Snow from the television series looking dismayed at the weather beyond the ice wall)

But we don't care about team wolf, team lion, team squid, team stag when we have TEAM DRAGON, otherwise known as...

House Targaryen is a house strongly associated with dragons; a number of historic Targaryens were dragon riders. The house symbol for Targaryen is a red three-headed dragon on a field of black, and their house motto is ‘Fire and Blood’. Targaryens are from Essos, not Westeros, specifically a kingdom called Valyria. Valyrians are known for incestuous breeding, and the ‘blood of the dragon’ was made obvious from purebred Targaryens possessing white hair and purple eyes.
The Targaryens took a small island called Dragonstone off the coast of Westeros, and it was fortunate that they held this territory because their homeland, Valyria, underwent huge volcanic upheaval and was pretty much destroyed in a cataclysmic event called the Doom of Valyria.

A hundred years after the Doom of Valyria, Aegon Targaryen planned to take over the continent of Westeros. Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys rode out on their dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes to conquer the kingdoms, starting with a fortress boasted to be ‘impenetrable’ by its creator – Harren had never encountered dragons, however, and Balerion the Black Dread, Aegon’s dragon, flew over Harrenhal’s defences with ease.
The Targaryens took all the kingdoms of Westeros (except Dorne, but they married into that one later) and thus Aegon became Aegon the Conqueror. Aegon took the swords of his fallen enemies and had his dragon, Balerion, melt the swords with his breath to create a throne with the swords; the Iron Throne.

The Dance of Dragons was a civil war amongst the Targaryens; after Viserys I died Aegon II and Rhaenyra competed for the throne; Aegon was coronated king at King’s Landing, Rhaenyra was coronated queen at Dragonstone. Rhaenyra’s husband and uncle, Prince Daemon, would travel with his dragon Caraxes to Harranhal to make a base.
As this was a Targaryen civil war, many of the fights were fought with dragons. The dragon Vhagar took out the dragons Arrax, Meleys and Sunfyre before finally meeting his match against Caraxes in the battle above God’s Eye, where Daemon (riding Caraxes) battled Aemond (riding Vhagar). Rhaenyra was eaten by Sunfyre.
Soon after all these dragon-battles, the number of dragons in the world dwindled away to nothing…
Book One: A Game of Thrones
Daenerys Targaryan. by Daniel-McCloskey Daenerys X. by Hed-ush Daenerys by deniznaz Blood of the Dragon by NikkiWardArt

The book ‘A Game of Thrones’ takes place around fifteen years after the fall of the last Targaryen ruler, Mad King Arys II, and a hundred and fifty years after the last dragon died. King Aerys II’s oldest heir, Rhaegar, was killed, but his younger heir Viserys III and his sister Daenarys escaped.
Viserys was a deeply unpleasant young man, and suffered with bouts of maddening rage, often being abusive to his sister. He planned to sell her to a Dothraki horselord named Khal Drogo for an army – once Daenerys is married to Drogo, however, Drogo explains that they are not ‘trading’; Daenerys was a gift to him, and if he so chooses, the khal may gift Viserys with an army in return.
One of Daenerys’ wedding gifts was a casket containing three dragon eggs; a black one, a green one and a cream-and-gold one.
Daenerys ruled alongside khal Drogo, although many of the Dothraki men did not approve of her as she knew little about the Dothraki way of life. Viserys became bitter over his lack of power in comparison, and after threatening his sister one last time caused Drogo to snap and kill him.
Drogo later became ill and died, and Daenerys brought the three dragon eggs to the funeral pyre, where they hatched in the flames. The Dothraki who either supported her as a female leader (a khaleesi) and the Dothraki who thought dragons were badass joined her side immediately – this was the start of her army.

Daenerys and her adorable dragon triplets travel with the knight Jorah Mormont and some loyal Dothraki  to the city of Qarth. The city takes them in out of the desert, but demand dragons as payment for helping Dany get the iron throne. They use warlocks to bedazzle her into their schemes, so Drogon burns down the warlock house.

Being queen of the cities in Slaver’s Bay is not easy, and Meereen falls into chaos. As pale mare plague runs through the city, Dany’s dragons Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion run amok, killing people and livestock. Daenarys captures Rhaegal and Viserion and puts them in captivity, but Drogon, the largest and fiercest dragon, flies away.
Daenarys is dating a hot mercenary called Daario Naharis, but for political reasons marries Hizdahr zo Loraq, and on her husband’s request re-opens Meereen’s fighting pits. While Dany is not a fan of this forced violence, her dragon son Drogon clearly is and flies in to see what the fuss is about, and starts to eat and kill people at the pits. Daenarys tries to calm him by climbing on his back, and accidentally recreates the ancient art of dragon riding that her ancestors were so well known for.
While she’s away, a prince thinks ‘I can probably impress the Targaryen lady if I can ride on of her dragons…’ so bumbles down to the pit where Rhaegal and Viserion are kept, is killed, and lets both dragons loose in Meereen.
Danaerys spends her days flying with Drogon, trying to convince her son to return to Meereen. Eventually she tries walking home on foot, becoming ill as she does so. Drogon finds her again, and together they find some more Dothraki.

Natural History
Dracarys by jalm16 GOT: Drogon by Cyprus-1 Red Westeros dragon by Azany Green Westeros dragon by Azany Blue Westeros dragon by Azany Ice and Fire (details - last WIP) by amaryllis-bloom

According to the author, the dragons in A Song of Ice and Fire have two wings and two legs, but as he does not make this explicit within the books themselves, fanartists are free to interpret the dragons as four-legged.
The bones, teeth and claws of the dragons are black, allegedly to a high iron content (in real life I know shrews have a high iron content in their teeth so they appear blood red rather than black, but this is a fantasy world so we won’t judge this artistic choice). Their bones are known to be stronger than steel.
Dragon scales are highly chromatic, and as they grow thicker they become a better fire-proof armour from the dragon. The phrase ‘fire made flesh’ is often used to describe dragons throughout the series, and they are said to smoke and smoulder on cold nights. Throughout their lives, their fire breath becomes stronger and stronger.
Dragons do not stop growing if they are allowed to fly free; Balerion the Black could swallow an auroch whole for example. They also can live to great ages, but not forever; Balerion died of old age when he was over 200 years old. When kept in enclosed spaces, such as the Dragonpit in King’s Landing, dragons are dog-sized and die young.
Dragons lay eggs covered in scales. It is assumed the dragons that lay eggs are female and the ones who do not are male, as there is no other way to determine a dragon’s sex. It is said that dragons can change sex at will (where is the fanart of a westeros dragon with a genderfluid pride flag I ask you?)
Dragon Relatives
Swamp Wyvern - Beasts of Ice and Fire by Kevcatalan Firewyrm - Beasts of Ice and Fire by Kevcatalan

In legends, sea dragons and ice dragons also exist, but they are unproven in the Song of Ice and Fire books (an ice dragon has made an appearance in the television series, however, and the planned 6th and 7th books may also include this dragon).
Animals related to dragons include wyverns, who, within the Song of Ice and Fire canon, differ from dragons in that they do not breathe fire and they have beaks, and tend to be smaller; brindled wyverns grow to around thirty feet long, and swamp wyverns only just larger than that. Tiny brownbellied wyverns are monkey-sized, but hunt in terrifyingly large packs and swarms, whereas the shadow-wing wyvern is most feared because it blends in so well with its surroundings that it cannot be seen. Some speculate that Valyrian bloodmages bred wyverns to create dragons.
Another possible dragon-relative is the firewyrm, who can breathe fire like a dragon can, grow to immense sizes like a dragon, but is wingless.
Other reptilian creatures include the basilisk, lizard lion and the walking lizard, but these are never linked closely to dragons. Cockatrices are mentioned, but only as a heraldic device for House Gargalen and as statues on Dragonstone, not as actual creatures.
Please note, the distinction between wyvern, firewyrm and dragon is something within the world of a Song of Ice and Fire; in real life feel free to use these terms interchangeably; dragon can be a loose term and it’s fun to play around with different ‘types’ of dragon.

Survey about the group is still ongoing: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WG78N…
Sorry for the super-short summary of the Song of Ice and Fire books - I tried writing out full plot summaries and the result was around 6000 words long - this means I may have forgotten to mention many, many important characters.
The most important of course is Brienne of Tarth.
Also, I only read the first book, so if this information is wildly inaccurate I am sorry.

I love your style so much and the way you draw the dragons - I don't want to call them cuddly because that might sound demeaning to the beasts that conquered Westeros but they have a certain solidness to them that makes me want to hug them, you know? Same solidness can also be used to rip a man in half so maybe I shouldn't XD
My fave is the one of Caraxes, such a cutie!

I did not enjoy the first book in the series, but I love the television show!
And oh no, foolish libraries! Have you tried asking them to get the book in? Often libraries take recommendations :3 (unless of course they have on record that they have the second book, but someone has borrowed it for years without giving it back...)
But yeah I'm not a fan of Martin's writing style, and Dany being only 13 in the books spooked me a little whenever she was having a sex scene- in the series she looks older so I can be all "eh she's 18 this is a lot less creepy". It's very rare that I actually prefer a screen version to a book version, but Martin has such a clunky writing style and a cello theme song doesn't play at the start of each chapter XD.
However, his world building is commendable and I'm glad the books are enjoyable to other people (mostly because it means the book series got the eyes of HBO, allowing the tv series to be made, and also because fantasy books are awesome).
Who was your favourite character?

Haven't watched the TV show, because I don't have the channel it's on, or the motivation to buy the boxset.

It's a constant problem of my libraries. They do, but it rarely works. I think if enough people ask for it, they consider it, but most of my area is into romance, crime and thriller books, so they get top pick.

According to my review, it was Jon and Daenrys. I felt like they had the most interesting development in their respective storylines.

Didn't love Dany in the book, love her in the show, and JONNNNNNNNNNNN HE'S SO GOOD!!!! I loved when he gave Needle to Arya it was such a good scene! True sibling love is giving swords to sisters! He just gets better and better.
And we had access to the TV for season 7 but me and my bf cannot afford television atm and it is KILLING us knowing the next season is out soon and all we can do is borrow seasons 1-3 on DVD... We're keeping our ears open to any friends or family who even slightly mention that they might have HBO XD But yeah don't blame you for not getting the DVDs, it's often over £10 a season even in the second-hand shops!!! madness!
