The title says it all.

Interesting how abstract shapes can carry with them a sense of presence, that something is even looking back at you from the random spatial configuration of geometry. Such is the anthropomorphic nature of our imagination, always working through pattern association and projecting a self similar character onto the world around us.

Projecting onto empty abstract an emotional quality or some kind of character or identity seems a bit insane and too synaesthetic for normal modes of thinking...

SO saying all that. I think the aliens merely used you as a tool via which to control another set of tools to create their image for all to see them through the lenses of non-linear abstract association as perhaps maybe direct proof of alien intelligences communicating with us.
