the kiss by GregStevens the kiss by GregStevens
This is meant to be mysterious and mythic, and I haven't decided exactly what it means yet.

Is it a god, creating a universe with a kiss? Or perhaps, creating the first soul with a kiss? Or is it a magical lover, kissing the soul of his lost loved one? Or bringing his loved one back with a kiss?

I'll leave it up to you! Complete the image with whatever story gives you heart the most pleasure.

Technical details:

Painted with a Wacom Tablet using Corel Painter 11.

The figure is painted entirely using the Liquid Ink Calligraphy / Depth Flat brushes, with four ink colors applied on separate layers and overlayed.

The glowing soul is an ink splat manipulated by adding paper texture effects, using photo burn / dodge, and enhancing the ink saturation contrast.

The background is a stock paper texture purchased by me from dreamtime stock images.

In many ways, this is an extension of the "practice" work I have been doing with simpler calligraphy portraits (e.g. [link]), although I spent much more time on this one, creating much more detail and precision with the shadows and calligraphy patterns.

Total time approximately 5 hours. I am especially proud of the patterns and shading in the face and hair: please use "download image" to see it in its largest size.

As a continuation of our (ongoing) discussion of views and artisic merit: Of my "popular" pieces, I think this one has a lot more artistic creativity than "Skyler Merkel" ( [link] ), but Skyler will consistently get more views, I believe, because the realism adds to the "titillation" value. This is "cool" and "artsy" but the Skyler image is what people click on when they are horny. LOL.

That's one of the biggest "noise" factors when trying to draw a relationship between view count and artistic value, I think.

Something about the colorization of this reminds me of a mosaic, somehow... again, very nice! :)

The body shading was done very nicely, that and the continued use of the line style :).

Sorry for not thanking you earlier about the faves, thanks now :). By the time I finished writing replies I had to leave my apartment for an obligated event :blushes:.

No problem! I actually don't usually thank every single "fave" that I get, anyway.

The varying textures are certainly delightful- and so are the colours. You've got a strong style. The pose is really intriguing with the rest of the picture too- shows a special moment captured.

(Maybe he's eating an exploding pudding. :paranoid:)

Personally, I think it be a god, whom is cleansing the souls of everything, and everyone. This world could really use a new beginning. Very nice job, and I enjoy your detail.

Really interesting piece, I like that you left it up to each and every one to decide what it meant. I still haven't made up my mind what to think, but it's cool anyway :) Nice anatomy, by the way

Great job on this! What exactly is the "soul" part though? I'm a little confused on that.

I have no idea what it means. LOL. I was just working on this image that I had in my head... maybe later I will come up with a better "meaning" for it, that I can put into the description. :-D

I guess it's supposed to be a burning soul that he's kissing into to beathe life into the universe? Sorry for the double post, but I'm trying to figure this out.
